Temporal Spans In Talk: Doing Consistency To Construct Fair Organization, Jeanie M. Forray, Jill Woodilla Nov 2002

Temporal Spans In Talk: Doing Consistency To Construct Fair Organization, Jeanie M. Forray, Jill Woodilla

WCBT Faculty Publications

It is generally understood that time, among its other aspects, is a resource in organizational life. In this paper, we take an interpretive perspective to this notion by considering temporality as a verbal resource in the work of organizing. We introduce the concept of 'temporal span' and discuss the ways in which temporal spans serve to establish consistency as an ongoing attribute of organizational reality. Empirical examples drawn from an ethnomethodological study of human resource managers demonstrate interactions during which these managers invoke temporal spans to construct 'fair organization'. We discuss the use of temporality as a verbal resource with …

The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons Nov 2002

The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons

WCBT Faculty Publications

The drive to implement the balanced scorecard at Philips Electronics came from the top down - as a directive from the Board of Management in Europe to all Philips divisions and companies worldwide. The directive went to each of the companies and their quality departments, with the effort in the medical division headed by the Quality Steering Committee that reports to the president of Philips Medical Systems. Philips Electronics has used the balanced scorecard to align company vision, focus employees on how they fit into the big picture, and educate them on what drives the business. An essential aid to …

The Sociophysiology Of Caring In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Herbert M. Adler Nov 2002

The Sociophysiology Of Caring In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Herbert M. Adler

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

The emotional investment required to construct a caring doctor-patient relationship can be justified on humane grounds. Can it also be justified as a direct physiologic intervention? Two lines of evidence point in this direction. People in an empathic relationship exhibit a correlation of indicators of autonomic activity. This occurs between speakers and responsive listeners, members of a coherent group, and bonded pairs of higher social animals. Furthermore, the experience of feeling cared about in a relationship reduces the secretion of stress hormones and shifts the neuroendocrine system toward homeostasis. Because the social engagement of emotions is simultaneously the social engagement …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate elective neck treatment in patients with early stage (T1-2 negative neck node [N0]) squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue. METHODS: The medical records of all patients with early stage (T1-2 N0) of oral tongue cancer at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between January 1980 and December 1997, were identified and retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Our cohort consisted of 93 patients: 45 males and 48 females, with a median age of 60 years. All patients received treatment with curative intent. Role Of Ultrasonography, Computed Tomography And Diagnostic Peritoneal Lavage In Abdominal Blunt Trauma, Saleh M. Al-Salamah, Shaukat M. Mirza, Sheikh N. Ahmad, Kamran Khalid

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL), ultrasonography and computed tomography in the management of blunt abdominal trauma. METHODS: A retrospective review of the charts of 233 patients with blunt abdominal trauma necessitating admission to Riyadh Medical Complex, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was carried out over a 2 year period (January 2000 to December 2001). The diagnostic yields of DPL, ultrasound and computed tomography were analyzed. The results were compared with findings on subsequent laparotomy or ultimate outcome, which continued in hospital observation and conservative management. RESULTS: Mean age was 23 years and 79% patients …

Rebound Hyperbilirubinemia In Term Infants After Phototherapy, Saad A. Al-Saedi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a rebound in serum bilirubin level occurs within 24 hours after discontinuation of phototherapy in term infants with hyperbilirubinemia. METHODS: A retrospective medical record review of term infants with hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy who were admitted over 24 months, June 1999 to December 2001, at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was completed. Total serum bilirubin levels (TSB) at and up to 24 hours after termination of phototherapy (follow-up levels) were recorded. The difference between mean TSB level at termination of phototherapy and at follow-up was calculated using the paired t test. RESULTS: Three …

Electromagnetic Scattering From A Gap In A Magneto-Dielectric Coating On An Infinite Ground Plane, George R. Simpson Nov 2002

Electromagnetic Scattering From A Gap In A Magneto-Dielectric Coating On An Infinite Ground Plane, George R. Simpson

Theses and Dissertations

The electromagnetic scattering from a gap in a magneto-dielectric coating on an infinite ground plane is analyzed. In this context, the gap forms a break only in the magneto-dielectric slab coating while the ground plane is continuous and unbroken. Volume equivalence is used to convert the gap region to one containing unknown volumetric equivalent electric and magnetic currents. The equivalent problem then is one of these currents radiating in the presence of an unbroken grounded magneto-dielectric slab. A Green's function for this geometry is developed consisting of two terms: a direct coupling term and correction term to account for the …

Altered Expression Of Skeletal Muscle Myosin Isoforms In Cancer Cachexia, Gary M. Diffee, Katherine Kalfas, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy Nov 2002

Altered Expression Of Skeletal Muscle Myosin Isoforms In Cancer Cachexia, Gary M. Diffee, Katherine Kalfas, Sadeeka Al-Majid, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Cachexia is commonly seen in cancer and is characterized by severe muscle wasting, but little is known about the effect of cancer cachexia on expression of contractile protein isoforms such as myosin. Other causes of muscle atrophy shift expression of myosin isoforms toward increased fast (type II) isoform expression. We injected mice with murine C-26 adenocarcinoma cells, a tumor cell line that has been shown to cause muscle wasting. Mice were killed 21 days after tumor injection, and hindlimb muscles were removed. Myosin heavy chain (MHC) and myosin light chain (MLC) content was determined in muscle homogenates by SDS-PAGE. Body …

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith Nov 2002

The Critical Resource Theory Of Fiduciary Duty, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

This Article proposes a new theory to unify the law of fiduciary duty. The prevailing view holds that fiduciary law is atomistic, arising for varied reasons in established categories of cases (such as trustee-beneficiary and director-shareholder) and ad hoc in relationships where one person trusts another and becomes vulnerable to harm as a result. By contrast, the critical resource theory of fiduciary duty holds that every relationship properly designated as fiduciary conforms to the following pattern: one party (the fiduciary) acts on behalf of another party (the beneficiary) while exercising discretion with respect to a critical resource belonging to the …
