The Lincoln Enigma: The Changing Faces Of An American Icon, Gabor Boritt
The Lincoln Enigma: The Changing Faces Of An American Icon, Gabor Boritt
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
Nearly a century and a half after his death, Abraham Lincoln remains an intrinsic part of the American consciousness, yet his intentions as president and his personal character continue to stir debate.
Now, in The Lincoln Enigma, Gabor Boritt invites renowned Lincoln scholars, and rising new voices, to take a look at much-debated aspects of Lincoln's life, including his possible gay relationships, his plan to send blacks back to Africa, and his high-handed treatment of the Constitution. Boritt explores Lincoln's proposals that looked to a lily-white America. Jean Baker marvels at Lincoln's loves and marriage. David Herbert Donald highlights …

A Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Conditions Using Coral Skeleton Geochemistry, Terrence M. Quinn, Daniel E. Sampson
A Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Conditions Using Coral Skeleton Geochemistry, Terrence M. Quinn, Daniel E. Sampson
Marine Science Faculty Publications
[1] We use elemental ratio (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, U/Ca and Ba/Ca) and oxygen isotope data from a Porites lutea coral head collected from offshore Amedee Island, New Caledonia (22degrees29'S, 166degrees28'E) to assess the degree to which changes in these geochemical variables reflect variations in sea surface conditions. We have assessed the robustness of each geochemical proxy by comparing 25 years (1992-1968) of monthly geochemical variations with a local record of sea surface temperature (SST) and with the appropriate 1degrees by 1degrees grid box from a global gridded SST data set. We conclude from our comparison that the most consistent proxies of …

Strengthening And Load Testing Of Three Bridges In Boone County, Missouri, S. Schiebel, R. Parretti, Antonio Nanni, M. Huck
Strengthening And Load Testing Of Three Bridges In Boone County, Missouri, S. Schiebel, R. Parretti, Antonio Nanni, M. Huck
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Three bridges in Boone County, Missouri - Brown School Road, Coats Lane, and Creasy Springs Bridges - were selected for strengthening with carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer laminates in both shear and flexure. The objective of the rehabilitation program was to remove the 15-ton load posting that had been imposed on each of the bridges. To verify the results of the upgrade, load tests were performed before and after strengthening on two of the bridges - Brown School Road and Coats Lane Bridges. This paper presents the procedures followed in the design, installation, and load testing of the bridges. A recommendation regarding the …

Introduction
Anthropological archaeologists have long recognized that the nature of the archeological record at a “site”, defined spatially and by artifact assemblage, is sometimes the result of hundreds of years of intermittent and diverse activities by unrelated individuals or kin groups. Many “sites” with observable remains of prehistoric or historic Native American activities are places amenable to contemporary use by individuals in an era of sophisticated mobility. These means of moving about the landscape often result in increased use of a place …

Microcathodolumunescence (MCL) spectra measurements, MCL and electron beam induced current (EBIC) imaging of the freestanding n-GaN samples grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy were made. Dark-spot defects in plan-view EBIC and MCL images and dark line defects in MCL images taken on the cleaved surface of the samples could be associated with dislocations. MCL spectra measurements in the vicinity of dislocations and in the matrix do not reveal specific luminescence bands that could be attributed to dislocations but rather suggest that dislocation regions have higher density of deep nonradiative traps.

Deep level electron and hole traps were studied by means of deep level transient spectroscopy with electrical and optical injection on a freestanding thick n-GaN sample with low dislocation density. It is shown that at both the upper and the lower surface of the sample there exists a thin, ∼0.5 μm layer of damaged material with lowered concentration of electrons and enhanced density of deep centers. Deep in the bulk of the film the densities of the majority of the electron and hole traps are shown to be very low, but measurably higher on the lower face (N face), …

"Shaming" Probation Penalties And The Sexual Offender: A Dangerous Combination, Kenya A. Jenkins
"Shaming" Probation Penalties And The Sexual Offender: A Dangerous Combination, Kenya A. Jenkins
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Sexual offenders are one of the larger problems in the criminal justice system today, particularly with regard to recidivism rates, which are extremely high among sexual offenders. Due to these problems, judges are increasingly imposing 'shaming' probation conditions. Shaming penalties include requiring sex offenders to put signs in their yards and bumper stickers on their cars identifying themselves as convicted sex offenders. This comment examines these shaming penalties in the context of the constitutional issues that they raise, and their effectiveness in rehabilitating the convicted offender and protecting the public. The comment concludes that shaming penalties are an inappropriate and …

Effects Of Urea, Isolated Soybean Protein And Blood Meal On Growing Steers Fed A Corn-Based Diet, W. F. Knaus, Donald H. Beerman, L. O. Tedeschi, M. Czajkowski, D. G. Fox, J. B. Russell
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A short term feeding trial was conducted to assess effects of nitrogen (N) supplementation on growing cattle and the ability of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) to predict responses. Four corn-based diets were used: (1) a 30% ruminal N-deficient control diet; (2) a urea supplemented diet; (3) a urea+isolated soy protein (ISP) diet; and (4) a urea + ISP + blood meal (BM) diet. Four Holstein steers (average initial body weight of 251 kg) were randomly assigned in a 4 × 4 Latin Square treatment design. Steers were fed 95% of ad libitum intake on an hourly …

Comparison Of Radiated Power From Structurally Different Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs
Comparison Of Radiated Power From Structurally Different Violins, Lily M. Wang, Courtney B. Burroughs
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
The acoustic power has been determined from intensity measurements on three structurally different violins: a Scherl and Roth student violin, Hutchins' SUS29S, and Hutchins' mezzo violin SUS 100. While each violin was bowed with an open-frame mechanical bowing machine, the intensity measurements were made by scanning each side of the bowing machine with an intensity probe. One-third octave band sound power levels of the acoustic radiation from each of the three instruments as each of the four open strings is bowed show that the structurally different mezzo violin produces greater power at low frequencies when the lowest (G) string is …

Many-To-Many Invocation: A New Framework For Building Collaborative Applications In Ad Hoc Networks, Hans-Peter Bischof, Alan Kaminsky
Many-To-Many Invocation: A New Framework For Building Collaborative Applications In Ad Hoc Networks, Hans-Peter Bischof, Alan Kaminsky
Articles
Many-to-Many Invocation (M2MI) is a new paradigm for building collaborative systems that run in wireless proximal ad hoc networks of fixed and mobile computing devices. M2MI is useful for building a broad range of systems, including service discovery frameworks; groupware for mobile ad hoc collaboration; systems involving networked devices (printers, cameras, sensors); and collaborative middleware systems. M2MI provides an object oriented method call abstraction based on broadcasting. An M2MI invocation means ``Every object out there that implements this interface, call this method.''. M2MI is layered on top of a new messaging protocol, the Many-to-Many Protocol (M2MP), which broadcasts messages to …
