Nebraska Moves Back On Track, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forecast Council Nov 2002

Nebraska Moves Back On Track, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forecast Council

Business in Nebraska

Nebraska did not fully partake in the 2001 national recession , but growth rates in retail sales, employment, and personal income were reduced. The reductions were due to a variety of causes that often were specific to a sector or group of sectors of economic activity. In some cases the growth in employment was restrained by labor availability. In other cases employment growth was restrained by the slow growth and recession in the national economy, especially its manufacturing sector. A falloff in tourism following the events of September 11 was partly to blame for the falloff in the growth rate …

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita Nov 2002

Homosexuality In India: Past And Present, Ruth Vanita

Global Humanities and Religions Faculty Publications

When I was active in the women’s movement in Delhi from 1978 to 1990 as founding coeditor of Manushi, India’s first feminist journal, homosexuality was rarely if ever discussed in left-wing, civil rights, or women’s movements, or at Delhi University, where I taught. Among the earliest newspaper reports I saw on the subject were those about female couples committing suicide, leaving behind notes declaring their undying love. In 1987, the wedding of two female police constables, Leela and Urmila, in central India, made national headlines and led to a debate on lesbianism. The women married each other outside the ambit …

Statistical Characteristics Ofsprite Halo Events Using Coincident Photometric And Imaging Data, R. Miyasato, Michael J. Taylor, H. Fukunishi, Y. Takahashi, H. Nielsen Nov 2002

Statistical Characteristics Ofsprite Halo Events Using Coincident Photometric And Imaging Data, R. Miyasato, Michael J. Taylor, H. Fukunishi, Y. Takahashi, H. Nielsen

All Physics Faculty Publications

Sprite halos are brief, diffuse flashes, which occur at the top of a sprite and precede the development of streamer structures at lower altitudes. We have investigated the characteristics of sprite halos in detail using coincident photometric and imaging data obtained during the Sprites'96 and '99 campaign in Colorado and Wyoming, USA. It is found that the average altitude of the centroid of the halo emission and the mean horizontal diameter of the halo events are ∼80 and ∼86 km, respectively, while the average speed of the descending motion of the sprite halos was ∼4.3 × 107 m/s. It …

Nonlocal Electrodynamic Modeling Of Fluorescence Characteristics For Molecules In A Spherical Cavity, Pui T. Leung, M. H. Hider Nov 2002

Nonlocal Electrodynamic Modeling Of Fluorescence Characteristics For Molecules In A Spherical Cavity, Pui T. Leung, M. H. Hider

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The emission characteristics for molecules in a spherical metallic microcavity are computed using a nonlocal electrodynamic model, based on a theory previously published by Fuchs and Claro [Phys. Rev. B 35, 3722 (1987)] for the multipole polarizability of a sphere. Both radially and tangentially oriented molecules at arbitrary locations inside the cavity are considered, and the results are compared with those from both the local response theory and those for molecules outside a spherical particle. The issue of reciprocity of the solutions for each of the sphere and cavity cases, respectively, is examined in the light of the nonlocal effects. …

Nitrogen Loading Into An Urban Estuary: Lake Pontchartrain (Louisiana, U.S.A.), R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson Nov 2002

Nitrogen Loading Into An Urban Estuary: Lake Pontchartrain (Louisiana, U.S.A.), R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Dubravko Justic, Erick M. Swenson

Faculty Publications

We constructed a nitrogen loading budget for the Lake Pontchartrain watershed located north of New Orleans, Louisiana (U.S.A.). Water quality measurements, discharge estimates, and literature values were used to establish the annual and seasonal variations in loading rates for total nitrogen and nitrate. The relatively stable annual loadings (million kg N) are about 10× that of the pre-settlement nitrogen loading, and come from atmosphere (1.3), the watershed (7.8), pumped urban runoff from New Orleans (1.0), and leakage through the Bonnet Carré flood control structure (0.5–0.9). Relatively minor additional amounts come from nitrogen fixation in the Lake. Occasional openings of the …

Control Of Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) In Backyards, Sonya Broughton, Francis De Lima

Bulletins 4000 -

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Medfly) is thought to originate from tropical Africa. It is a pest in many areas of the world including Western Australia. It was first detected at Claremont in 1895 and is now found as far south as Esperance and as far north as Derby. The main area of infestation extends from Carnarvon to Bunbury.
