Special Word-Unit Windows In Running Text, Mike Keith
Special Word-Unit Windows In Running Text, Mike Keith
Word Ways
The idea of searching existing for accidental windows (contiguous blocks of text) having special properties has been explored often in Word Ways, but previous studies have usually considered letter-unit constraints such as the lipogram or pangram. In this article, inspired by similar explorations in the new edition of Opperlands! Taal- & letterkunde (Battus' seminal book on Dutch wordplay), we focus on textual windows having special word-unit properties.

Word Ways
AEIOU Words, those which contain just one each of the 5 major vowels, have always held a fascination for logologists, especially those words in which the 5 vowels appear in alphabetical order (AEIOU), and reverse alphabetical order (UOIEA), respectively. FACETIOUS and SUBCONTINENTAL are examples. Below, I offer a substantial addition to the collections of these words which have already appeared in Word Ways. Most of them are the names of locations taken from The United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN). These are populated places unless stated otherwise. Let us begin by taking a brief look at the current state …

Using Appropriateness Measurement To Detect Realistic Faking Of Personality Tests, Brian Holt
Using Appropriateness Measurement To Detect Realistic Faking Of Personality Tests, Brian Holt
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research has shown that personality tests are susceptible to faking and that test takers do indeed take advantage of this vulnerability. This faking creates a problem when organizations use personality tests as screening tools for candidates for employment. Among the methods available to detect faking, appropriateness measurement (i.e., examining how well a pattern of responses fit item characteristics) has not been thoroughly investigated. The present study examines whether the two most popular appropriateness indices, Z3 and F2, are capable of detecting response distortion among test takers instructed to answer honestly versus fake. The groups demonstrated differences between overall mean scores, …

Relaxation and temperature cycles of thermoremanent magnetization, MTRM, in the superspin-glass phase of [Co80Fe20 (0.9 nm)/Al2O3 (3 nm)] 10 have been investigated. The relaxation of MTRM exhibits ageing phenomena. In negative temperature cycles for temperature steps larger than 1 K the magnetic state is retrieved (memory effect) on returning to the measurement temperature. This property is independent of the application of a field step during intermediate cooling. In positive temperature cycles the relaxation is suppressed after temporary heating. The observations are discussed in the light of both the droplet and the …
Conflict Emergence And Escalation In Interactive International Dyads, David Todd Kinsella, Bruce M. Russett
Conflict Emergence And Escalation In Interactive International Dyads, David Todd Kinsella, Bruce M. Russett
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
We examine whether the conditions affecting initial expressions of hostility are similar to those affecting militarized disputes. Analyzing dyadic interactions during the years 1951–1992, we estimate a model to take into account selection effects and check it against another allowing conjunctive causation. Both provide close approximations to theoretical models of the conflict process and yield similar results. We confirm Kant’s belief that all states are subject to the realist conditions of interstate competition that makes disputes likely, but that liberal influences, if present, can constrain the escalation of such disputes to war. Several influences on the conflict process have nonmonotonic …

Calcium Binding To Calmodulin Mutants Monitored By Domain-Specific Intrinsic Phenylalanine And Tyrosine Fluorescence, W. S. Vanscyoc, B. R. Sorensen, E. Rusinova, William Laws, J. B. A. Ross, M. A. Shea
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Cooperative calcium binding to the two homologous domains of calmodulin (CaM) induces conformational changes that regulate its association with and activation of numerous cellular target proteins. Calcium binding to the pair of high-affinity sites (III and IV in the C-domain) can be monitored by observing calcium-dependent changes in intrinsic tyrosine fluorescence intensity (lambda(ex)/lambda(em) of 277/320 nm). However, calcium binding to the low-affinity sites (I and II in the N-domain) is more difficult to measure with optical spectroscopy because that domain of CaM does not contain tryptophan or tyrosine. We recently demonstrated that calcium-dependent changes in intrinsic phenylalanine fluorescence (lambdaex/lambdaem of …
Groel Expression In Gyrb Mutants Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Janet Alverson, D. Scott Samuels
Groel Expression In Gyrb Mutants Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Janet Alverson, D. Scott Samuels
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
GroEL protein and groEL mRNA transcript were up-regulated in gyrB mutants of Borrelia burgdorferi, a causative agent of Lyme disease. Furthermore, the protein and transcript levels in gyrB mutants were greater than those in experimentally heat-shocked cultures of wild-type B. burgdorferi. Circular DNA in the gyrB mutants was more relaxed than in wild-type cells, although groEL is on the linear chromosome of B. burgdorferi. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence, albeit indirect, for the effect of DNA topology on gene expression from a linear DNA molecule in a bacterium.

Strengthening Of Short Shear Span Reinforced Concrete T Joists With Fiber-Reinforced Plasic Composites, Francesco Micelli, Raghu H. Annaiah, Antonio Nanni
Strengthening Of Short Shear Span Reinforced Concrete T Joists With Fiber-Reinforced Plasic Composites, Francesco Micelli, Raghu H. Annaiah, Antonio Nanni
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this work, the results of an experimental study conducted in a 1964-vintage building are presented. Twelve reinforced concrete (RC) T-joists strengthened with fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites were loaded until failure in a short shear span configuration. Different strengthening schemes, including different FRP materials and a new FRP anchorage system, were adopted in order to compare the performance of the different installations. Carbon FRP and aramid FRP sheets in an epoxy matrix were bonded to the RC joists using the wet layup technique. All of the joists were loaded close to one end support and showed similar cracking patterns at …

Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah
Ethnicity And Infant Mortality In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Ghana, Stephen Obeng Gyimah
PSC Discussion Papers Series
This study is premised on the hypothesis that ethnic specific socio-cultural practices such as dietary taboos and food avoidances on mothers and infants, as well as perceptions of disease aetiology and treatment patterns may be salient to infant mortality differentials in Ghana. To inform policy the paper explores if there are significant ethnic differences in the risk of infant death, and whether such differences are due to intrinsic cultural norms or socio-economic disparities. Using data on 3298 recent births from the 1998 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, the bivariate results indicated significant ethnic differences. Relative to Asante children, the risk …
The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson
The Roles Of Companions In Geriatric Patient–Interdisciplinary Oncology Team Interactions, Laura L. Ellingson
Gender and Sexuality Studies
This study examined companions' roles in interactions between patients and interdisciplinary geriatric oncology team members. Companions' roles identified include memory aid, emotional support, transcriber, aid in decision making, companionship, elaboration, advocate for patient, and interpreter. Specific patterns of variability of roles across team member disciplines include relatively passive companions who performed more active roles with physician, relatively active companions who performed more passive roles with physician, and relatively passive companions who performed more active roles when particular topics were raised, regardless of team discipline. Two patterns of stability across interactions emerged: consistently active or passive.
The Battles Over Swiss Liberty, Marc H. Lerner
The Battles Over Swiss Liberty, Marc H. Lerner
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Between the French Revolution and the Revolutions of 1848, the European conception of freedom and liberty changed dramatically. Likewise with Switzerland, between the Helvetic Republic and the Sonderbund war of 1847, the conceptions of true Swiss liberty underwent radical alteration. In Zurich, Schwyz and Vaud a growing individualistic sense of liberty challenged a collective sense of freedom. To some extent an emphasis on guaranteed individual rights replaced the emphasis on local autonomy and self-rule. The changing understandings of Freiheit or liberte in Zurich, Schwyz and Vaud reflect the changes that occurred throughout Switzerland as well as Europe. The battle over …

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Behavior Rating Inventory Of Executive Function (Brief) In A Clinical Sample, G. G. Gioia, P. K. Isquith, P. D. Retzlaff, K. A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Evidence for the validity of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000) based on internal structure was examined in a sample of children with mixed clinical diagnoses via maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis. Four alternative factor models of children's executive function, based on current theories that posit a unidimensional versus fractionated model (Rabbitt, 1997; Shallice & Burgess, 1991), using the revised 9-scale BRIEF configuration that separates two components of the Monitor scale, were examined for model fit. A 3-factor structure best modeled the data when compared directly with 1-, 2-, and 4-factor models. …

"Getting Into The Mouths" Of Preschoolers: A Method For Obtaining Buccal Samples For Later Genotyping, K. A. Espy, A. F. Hamby
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
A new procedure is described by which to obtain buccal samples from preschool children for research investigations that include genotyping. Called the "Lollipop Tasting Game", the procedure involves three mason jars which were filled about halfway with water. Granulated sugar was added to each jar to make a noticeably sweet solution. Red food coloring was added to the first jar, a small bit of reconstituted lemon juice and yellow food coloring were added to the second jar, and finally, a bit of vanilla and blue food coloring were added to the last jar. The examiner dips cotton swabs in the …
