The Ecological Genetics Of Gynodioecy In Silene Acaulis L. (Caryophyllaceae): Spatial Sex Structure And Inbreeding Depression, Stephen Robert Keller

Gynodioecy, the co-occurrence of females and hermaphrodites, is considered an intermediate step in the evolution of separate sexes in flowering plants. Highly variable female frequencies among populations suggest structuring of sex determining genes and differences in the relative fitness of females and hermaphrodites as seed parents. I investigated spatial variability in sex ratio and the effects of inbreeding on offspring quality in Silene acaulis. Female frequencies varied among populations from 0.32 to 0.69, and most were at temporal equilibrium. Females were significantly clumped within two of six populations. Females produced from 4 to 27 times as many fruits as hermaphrodites. …

In 2002, the United States abandoned the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and began constructing a missile defense system in Alaska. Questions about how missile defense will contribute to U.S. security remain. Moreover, beliefs about what constitutes security are expanding to include considerations of global environmental stability. According to environmental security theories on arms control, non-proliferation, and environmental degradation, deploying missile defense may make the U.S. and the world less secure. This analysis addresses the issue by exploring the military's role in Alaska and resulting environmental damage, followed by a history of missile defense systems and a description ofthe Alaskan project's components. …

People's Experiences Of Gossiping: A Narrative Analysis, Dina V. Nekrassova

This study employs narrative methodology to develop an understanding of meanings people make of their gossiping experiences. Four theoretical approaches are identified in the review of literature: functionalistic approach, gossip as information management, and gossip as a social form of discreet indiscretion which extended as a basis for examining gossiping as a communication experience. Four themes emerged from six narrative interviews, regarding the co-researchers' interpretations of their gossiping experiences: secrecy as a gossiping experience, gossiping as a negative experience, gossiping as a positive experience, and gossiping as being connected. This exploratory study examined individuals' lived experience with communication apprehension (CA). CA has been explored extensively over the past 35 years by researchers seeking psychological explanations for communication phenomenon and employing the premise that CA exists as a "trait-like" characteristic of personality or as a relatively permanent behavioral disposition. Grounded in a constructionist epistemology, this study presumes that meaning is created, maintained, and transformed through communication with others. From this perspective, CA is an individual's evaluation of anticipated or occurring communication events, based upon his/her prior experiences interacting with others in specific situations. A Search For Identity In The Narrative Maelstrom: A Psychoanalytic Approach To Ishmael In Moby-Dick, Kim Christopher Williamson

'Call me Ishmael.' This opening line has confronted many a wary student first opening Moby-Dick. This thesis also confronts this line, by way of the enigma that is the narrator of the novel. Critics have long noted the fragmented nature of Moby-Dick, especially its oddly varying points of view. The book opens with a homodiegetic narrator telling a sea adventure tale, but by the end is dominated by a heterodiegetic narrator telling the story of Ahab's tragedy. Using classic Freudian psychology and some Lacanian theory, this thesis makes a case for the complexity and importance of Ishmael in the structure …

Geochemical data for igneous rock suites provide conclusive evidence for the occurrence of open‐system processes within thermally and compositionally evolving magma bodies. The most significant processes include magma Recharge (with possible enclave formation and magma mixing), Assimilation of anatectic melt derived from wallrock partial melting and formation of cumulates by Fractional Crystallization (RAFC). In this study, we extend the Energetically Constrained Assimilation and Fractional Crystallization (EC‐AFC) model [Spera and Bohrson, 2001; Bohrson and Spera, 2001] to include the addition of compositionally and thermally distinct recharge melt during simultaneous assimilation and fractional crystallization. In Alaska, contemporary Native artists are creating compelling works of art, yet, in the literature and exhibitions about Native North American contemporary art, Alaska Native art receives little if any attention. In this study, I assess how contemporary Alaska Native art is presented to the public to evaluate whether these representations marginalize this artwork. I examine the creation, exhibition and reception of contemporary Alaska Native art based on the perspectives of the artists, exhibit evaluations and viewer responses. Spawning Habitat Characteristics Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Brandee Lynn Gerke

Spawning habitats of Pacific herring in Prince William Sound, Alaska were analyzed to determine the importance of habitat features including vegetation type, percent vegetative cover, substrate type, water depth, and shoreline slope in the importance of herring spawning ground selection. Sidescan sonar data were used to compare bottom habitat characteristics of herring spawning areas vs. non-spawn areas. No significant differences in vegetation or substrate type were detected between areas where herring do and do not spawn. Generalized linear models and analysis of variance models were constructed to predict the probability of herring spawn and estimate egg densities given habitat information …

Feasibility Of Using Standard Targets To Measure Sound Attenuation In Rivers With Varying Suspended Sediment Loads, Carl T. Pfisterer

In this study I examined the feasibility of using standard targets to measure sound attenuation in water due to suspended sediment. I determined that the variability of the target strength measurements was sufficiently high to prevent the use of this measure in obtaining accurate attenuation estimates. Average target strength values for a 1.5 inch tungsten carbide sphere differed by as much as 11.4 dB with spreads of the upper and lower 90% values as high as 18 dB. This high variability was likely due to a combination of factors that include multipath signal returns (exacerbated by relatively high transducer side …

Growth, Foraging Behavior And Distribution Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling In An Alaskan Stream, Cheryl Ann Dion

I evaluated the ability of three models to relate habitat characteristics to habitat quality for age-0 Arctic grayling Thymallullus arcticus in an Alaska stream. A temperature-based growth model made accurate predictions, showing it can reliably assess thermal habitat quality. Deviations between predicted and observed growth were useful because they identified the timing of possible critical periods, when competition for food or space may cause density-dependent mortality and emigration. A foraging model consistently overestimated the mean prey size of fish, showing that such models need further work before then can accurately assess food availability from invertebrate drift. The ecology of eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) was studied at Twentymile River, a tributory of Turnagain Arm located in southcentral Alaska. In 2000 and 2001, we investigated the environmental factors associated with the migration of adult eulachon and downstream drift of larval eulachon. We assessed run timing, freshwater duration, length, weight, age, presence or absence of teeth, fecundity, and gear selectivity for dip and gill nets. Catch per unit effort of migrating adult fish were correlated with water temperature, tide height, river discharge, light intensity, and the density of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). Rockfish belong to the speciose genus Sebastes (72 species described in the Northeast Pacific). Basic biological and life history information for many rockfish species is limited. Little is known about juvenile recruitment, and identification in early life stages is difficult because the larvae of congeners look similar and often occur in spatial and temporal association. Population genetic structure is an important element for characterization of species or populations, and may provide information on productivity and life history. In order to evaluate the impact of natural organic matter (NOM) on drinking water, the hydrology of the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed (CPCRW) was considered. The CPCRW provided an excellent opportunity to investigate contaminant transport as it relates to hydrology in a well studied, discontinuous permafrost environment. The seasonal variation of organic chemistry of three different water sources (i.e. ground water, artesian spring and stream) was studied during the course of the year 2001. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of bottom ice on sedimentation processes at a study site on the Upper Kuparuk River, in Northern Alaska. The approach taken was to use the Meyer-Peter and Mueller (1948) and Parker (1990) equations to determine bedload rating curves at four cross sections within the study reach, and to apply these rating curves to the ten year flow history of the study site to determine the total potential bedload transport that was suppressed during snowmelt runoff. In conjunction with this analysis, a tracer rock study was performed at the study site. …

An initial iron (Fe) Boltzmann lidar was developed in winter 2000-2001 at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR). This resonance lidar system supported Fe concentration measurements. An initial Fe Boltzmann temperature measurement was made in December 2000. This initial system was fundamentally limited by the 1 pm tuning resolution of the laser. During the winter of 2001-2002, a control system was developed to increase the resolution of the laser tuning to 0.09 pm. Fe cooncentration and Fe Boltzmann temperature measurements were made and an experimental analysis of the measurements was developed. Steps To Freedom: The Process Of Escaping Abuse, Sandra J. Armstrong

Psychology

The purpose of this study was to look at factors involved in the process of women leaving abusive relationships. In two interviews of one to two hours each, each of the three women told the story of her abusive relationship. Study findings indicate that these women began abusive relationships during unstable or chaotic periods of their lives, when they were more vulnerable to manipulation. The abuse caused a distortion of reality for these women, but as soon as they were able to gain a clear view of reality, they immediately left their relationships.

Though the primary cause(s) of the Steller sea lion decline remains unknown, one hypothesis is nutritional stress, possibly the result of climatic regime shifts reducing prey availability and/or quality. Researchers at the Alaska SeaLife Center formulated three feeding regimes representative of Steller sea lion diets: prior to and during their population decline and from a stable population. The purpose of this project was to compare the nutritional quality of these diets using proximate composition and bomb calorimetry. The pre-decline and stable diets are composed of more high-fat prey, like herring, with resulting energy densities being significantly higher than the decline …
