Evidence For An Epigenetic Mechanism By Which Hsp90 Acts As A Capacitor For Morphological Evolution, Vincent E. Sollars, Xiangyi Lu, Li Xiao, Xiaoyan Wang, Mark D. Garfinkel, Douglas M. Ruden
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Morphological alterations have been shown to occur in Drosophila melanogaster when function of Hsp90 (heat shock 0-kDa protein 1α, encoded by Hsp83) is compromised during development1. Genetic selection maintains the altered phenotypes in subsequent generations1. Recent experiments have shown, however, that phenotypic variation still occurs in nearly isogenic recombinant inbred strains of Arabidopsis thaliana2. Using a sensitized isogenic D. melanogaster strain, iso-KrIf-1, we confirm this finding and present evidence supporting an epigenetic mechanism for Hsp90’s capacitor function, whereby reduced activity of Hsp90 induces a heritably altered chromatin state. From March to May 2001, aerosol size distributions and chemical compositions were measured using differential mobility analyzers (DMA), an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS), Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors (MOUDI), and denuder samplers onboard the Twin Otter aircraft as part of the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia campaign. Of the 19 research flights, measurements on four flights that represented different aerosol characteristics are analyzed in detail. Clear-column radiative closure is studied by comparing aerosol extinctions predicted using in situ aerosol size distribution and chemical composition measurements to those derived from the 14-wavelength NASA Ames Airborne Tracking Sun photometer (AATS-14). During the mid-1990s, Kathleen Hardee Arsenault conducted research on two notable authors, Francis Robert Goulding and Lois Lenski. A member of the Poynter Library faculty from 1981 through 2009 and a graduate of Wellesley College and Simmons College, she has written articles and scholarly reviews on a variety of Florida topics, including the historical development of children’s literature in Florida. Arsenault previously served as dean of the Poynter Library.

Magnetization measurements have been carried out on the Er2Mn3Si5 compound (tetragonal Sc2Fe3Si5-type, space group P4/mnc) in the temperature range 1.8-300 K. There is a crossover from a room temperature paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase at 75 K (TC1). A second magnetic transition is observed at 11.5 K (TC2). The magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic region, above 100 K, follows simple Curie-Weiss type behavior. The magnetization does not saturate at 2 K even in applied fields of 7 T. In recent years, networked sensors are finding use in a variety of different applications ranging from temperature monitoring to battlefield strategy planning. Advances in fabrication techniques have led to the development of sensor-actuator devices called MEMS. It has now become possible to move software closer to where the “action” is, i.e. the sensors themselves. These sensor devices typically have a micro-controller, instruction and data memory, a radio module for wireless communication and an operating system. These devices are severely resource constrained in terms of memory, processing power and energy, since most of these devices are battery driven. A sensor network …

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov
Theses and Dissertations
Laser high-order harmonic generation in the presence of relatively weak interfering light is investigated. The interfering pulses intersect the primary harmonic-generating laser pulse at the laser focus. The interfering light creates a standing intensity and phase modulation on the field, which disrupts microscopic phase matching and shuts down local high harmonic production. Suppression of the 23rd harmonic (by two orders of magnitude) is observed when a counter-propagating interfering pulse of light is introduced. A sequence of counter-propagating pulses can be used to shut down harmonic production in out-of-phase zones of the generating volume to achieve quasi phase matching. Harmonic emission …

Psychologists have been interested in personality characteristics for decades. One characteristic of personality studied by researchers is that of conscientiousness. Conscientiousness can de defined as a "degree of organization, persistence, and motivation in goal-directed behavior" (Costa & McCrae, 1985, p.2) This study divided the terms defining conscientiousness into three categories for purpose of item development: organization, persistence, and motivation. Organization incudes, but is not limited to, being organized, reliable, and practical. Persistence includes concepts of responsibleness, thoroughness, and commitment to hard-work. Motivation involves characteristics of enthusiasm, morality, cautiousness, and seriousness. The purpose of this study was to develop a measure …
