Two individuals with developmental delays with a history of problem behavior participated in this study. Its purpose was to examine the efficacy of combining two treatments demonstrated to reduce problem behavior: response-independent stimulus delivery and differential reinforcement of an alternative behavior. This study examined whether the response-independent delivery of an alternative preferred stimulus and differential reinforcement of manding resulted in increases in manding and suppression of problem behavior prior to and during the fading of the schedule of response-independent stimulus delivery. This paper extends the Domar and Musgrave results concerning the effect of an income tax on risk taking to the case where different tax rates apply to different types of assets. Although the results depend on exactly how the differential tax rates are imposed, as a general matter, an income tax with differential rates can be seen as a tax only on the risk-free rate of return and a fixed ex ante subsidy for purchasing the lower-taxed assets. There are implications for measuring deadweight loss from differential taxation and for spending resources on accurately measuring capital income.

The law of corporate reorganizations is conventionally justified as a way to preserve a firm’s going-concern value: Specialized assets in a particular firm are worth more together in that firm than anywhere else. This paper shows that this notion is mistaken. Its flaw is that it lacks a well-developed understanding of the nature of a firm. Initially, it is easy to confuse size with specialization and overstate the extent to which assets are dedicated to a particular enterprise. Even when such dedicated assets exist, they often do not need to stay in the same firm. As Coase taught us, as …

From the earliest times, animals were understood as object of human rights. That result did not depend on some limited understanding of their capabilities for cognition and sensation, but rather rested on the strong sense that without domestication human beings could not secure their own advancement. The modern claims for animal rights cannot therefore be justified by an appeal to some newer and deeper understanding of the subject, but must rest on the claim that what they share with human beings is more important than what separates them. Bioorganic Studies In Aids: Synthetic Antifungals Against Pneumocystis Carinii Based On The Multivalency Concept, Langu Peng, Cunxiang Chen, Christian R. Gonzalez, Valeria Balogh-Nair

We report the syntheses of antifungals containing the novel pharmacophores: oxaziridines, sulfonyloxaziridines, nitrones and nitronyl nitroxides. We hypothesized that multiple copies of the pharmacophore per molecule might be a prerequisite to enhance efficacy against the opportunistic pathogen, Pneumocystis carinii. Therefore structural optimization of the leads was based on this new “multivalency” approach. All bisoxaziridines were inactive, but a trisoxaziridine caused ca. 50% reduction of the number of P. carinii tropozoites, compared to TMP-SMX, and a hexaoxaziridine at 1 µg/ml showed activity comparable to the currently used drug, TMP-SMX. Poanes hobomok monofacies is described from the southern limits of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee, United States. The type locality is Chestnut Mountain, 3,400’, Macon County, North Carolina, United States. This new subspecies is characterized by the similarity of males and females and overall much darker and subdued marking when compared to both P. h. hobomok (eastern to mid-, northern United States and eastern to mid-, southern Canada) and P. h. wetona (Colorado and New Mexico, United States). C57BL/6 (B6) mice infected with LP-BM5 retroviruses develop disease, including an immunodeficiency similar to AIDS. This disease, murine AIDS (MAIDS), is inhibited by in vivo anti-CD154 monoclonal antibody treatment. The similar levels of insusceptibility of CD40^−/− and CD154^−/− B6 mice indicate that CD154/CD40 molecular interactions are required for MAIDS. CD4⁺ T and B cells, respectively, provide the CD154 and CD40 expression needed for MAIDS induction. Here, the required CD154/CD40 interaction is shown to be independent of CD80 and CD86 expression: CD80/CD86^−/− B6 mice develop MAIDS after LP-BM5 infection.

From the values of sin2θ taken from powder photographs of the cubic crystal system, a variable constant, K, which is a multiple of (h2 + k2 + l2) can be determined. The smallest value of sin2θ1 gives rise to a multiple of one, two, or three which corresponds to the smallest value of Σhl2 for the primitive, bcc and fcc crystals, respectively. This study reports on the optimisation and calibration of the Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer installed in the Department of Physics, University of Dar es Salaam. The spectrometer was subsequently utilized to determine concentrations of heavy metals in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) Solms.) found growing along the shore of Lake Victoria. The optimal conditions and detection limits were determined experimentally by variation of the excitation parameters. In the past two decades, the mobility of mid-ocean ridges relative to the mantle (absolute migration) have been correlated with major observable features, such as, spreading asymmetry and asymmetry in the abundance of seamounts. The mobility of mid-ocean ridges is also thought to be an important factor that influences the diversity of ridge-crest basalts. However, the mobility of mid-ocean ridges have not yet been defined and mapped. The absolute migration of global mid-ocean ridges since 85 Ma has been computed and mapped. Comparison Of Various Methods For Estimating Wave Incident Angles In The Nearshore Zone, As Ngusaru

Five different methods were examined for their suitability in estimating the inshore wave incident angles on a nearshore zone with a complex topography. Visual observation provided preliminary estimates. Two frequency independent methods and one frequency dependent method based on current meter measurements were examined. Another frequency dependent method based on collocated bottom pressure and current meter measurements was also examined. The results from all the methods provided a reasonably consistent estimate of the inshore wave incident angles. The frequency independent methods gave exactly the same results while the frequency dependent methods had a 5% relative error among themselves. Between frequency …
