Feminists in the mid-1970s initiated attention to a longtime complaint shared by many women: the manner in which females are portrayed in films. America boasts a patriarchal society containing an ideological foundation that operates contrary to many female interests. A feminist examination of film exposes how scripts place female characters in narratives and textual interactions that involves a collaboration between the filmmakers and the film spectaters, constituting a patriarchal definition of femininity. Insurance companies will pay out an estimated $50 billion in claims as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The enormous consequences of the attacks to both the local and national economy surprised many and have raised concerns about the cost of such events. Predicting the occurrence and economic cost of terrorist attacks is fundamentally different than predicting the occurrence and economic cost of natural disasters. The cost of natural disasters is more predictable and often can be accurately estimated using historical data. Even losses from typical kinds of crime such as burglary show predictable patterns. A Preliminary Investigation Of Sense Of Humor And Purpose In Life, Sandra Batten

It was hypothesized that sense o f humor is related to purpose in life. A convenience sample o f 136 undergraduates completed the Modified Purpose in Life test (Chang & Dodder, 1983-84) and the Multidimensional Sense o f Humor Scale (Thorson & Powell, 1993). The overall correlation between the two scales in this sample was .30 ( p < .001). The sub-scales o f the MSHS that related most robustly to purpose in life were Coping ( r = . 3 1 , p < .001) and Attitude Toward Humor and Humorous People ( r = .45, p < .001).

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between a pre-school child’s fears and the child’s use of an imaginary companion or personified object. Preschool-aged children (36 To 74 months) were interviewed using a revised version o f the FSSC-R fear scale, and an imaginary companion questionnaire. Parents were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire. Data analyses revealed that children who did not have an imaginary companion or a personified object had an absolute higher total fear score than children who had this type o f figure, although this difference was not significant. This study described the common lived experience of 10 first year school counselors. This study explored the experiences within four areas: relationships with staff and students, graduate program training, skills implementation, and relationships with building and district administration. The phenomenology relied on an initial structured interview after eight weeks on the job as the main data source. Other data sources included participant journal entries, non-participant observations, veteran counselor contact logs, and a follow-up interview at the end of the school year. This qualitative case study sought to determine if patterns exist in the parental choice process. Using the Theory of Alternative Behavior (Jaccard, 1981), we examined the relationship of warmth sensuousness, physical sensuousness, and sensation seeking to individuals' tanning salon behaviors, intentions, and attitudes among undergraduates at a Southeastern university.

Females, high sensation seekers, those high in warmth sensuousness, and those with darker skin types were more likely to tan. Females were more likely to intend to tan in the next year. Those higher in warmth sensuousness were more likely to intend to tan more than 10 times in the next year. Females and subjects higher in warmth sensuousness had more positive attitudes toward tanning. Significant …

Insect herbivory is common, but the conditions under which it reduces the fitness and population size of plants remain poorly understood. We quantified populationlevel impacts of floral herbivory by specialized insects on cobweb thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. occidentale) in a California coastal dune ecosystem, and then compared these demographic effects to those published for Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens) in similarly designed exclusion experiments in the continental sand dune ecosystem in the Great Plains. Alignment of vapor grown carbon nano-reinforced polyethylene composites was performed using conventional extrusion processing methods. The alignment of the nanofibers within polyethylene, PE; the matrix, produced a material with anisotropic behavior. Mechanical and thermo-physical properties of the nanocomposite were studied. Enhancements in mechanical properties were investigated for pure PE, misaligned, and aligned specimens for stress versus strain, maximum load, and Young's modulus as high as 185, 273, and 80%, respectively. In fact, toughness was considerably high for the 10 rpm specimen when compared to other samples of different windup speeds. Different Types Of Welfare States? A Methodological Deconstruction Of Comparative Research, Rebecca A. Van Voorhis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Research on modern welfare states has been strongly influenced by the theory that they develop according to patterns, which form distinct regimes liberal, corporatist, and social democratic. These regimes are characterized by several key variables, among which the decommodification of labor is heavily weighted. This article examines the operational assumptions, measures, and calculations used in the most widely cited empirical study around which distinct regime theory has developed over the last decade. The findings reveal critical methodological weaknesses in the conceptualization and quantification of decommodification measures, which form the empirical cornerstone of distinct regime theory.
