Because of increasing numbers in wildlife, immunocontraceptives are being developed to decrease these animals and other birds. This study was conducted in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey Midcontinent Science Center in Fort Collins, Colorado (USGS), to determine whether mammalian GnRH (m-GnRH) can be used as a potential immunocontraceptive to decrease reproductive fertility in mature Japanese quail.

Eighty male and female Japanese quail were injected with either mGnRH, chicken GnRH-I (c-GnRH-I), chicken GnRH-II (c-GnRH-II), or vehicle (controls). Blood samples were analyzed for estrogen (E2) and testosterone (T) levels, in addition to antibody titer (Aby) development against the corresponding conjugated …

Insect herbivory is common, but the conditions under which it reduces the fitness and population size of plants remain poorly understood. We quantified population-level impacts of floral herbivory by specialized insects on cobweb thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. occidentale) in a California coastal dune ecosystem, and then compared these demographic effects to those published for Platte thistle (Cirsium canescens) in similarly designed exclusion experiments in the continental sand dune ecosystem in the Great Plains. Over the past two decades, academics have generated a large empirical literature examining whether antitakeover defenses like poison pills or staggered board provisions decrease the wealth of shareholders in target corporations. Many studies, however, rely primarily on ex post analysis-they consider only how antitakeover defenses (ATDs) influence shareholder wealth after the corporation has been formed and, in some cases, long after the ATD was adopted. This Response argues that it may be impossible to fully understand the purpose or effects of ATDs without also considering their ex ante effects. "Rolling contracts" are one method of presenting standard forms to contracting parties, including consumers, who are the focus of this paper. In a rolling contract, a purchaser orders goods and pays for them before seeing most of the terms, which come later in or on the packaging of the goods. The purchaser can return the goods for a limited time period.

This paper addresses the controversy over whether the new terms are part of the contract and enforceable against the purchaser. Although most analysts focus on when the contract is formed, this paper urges that this analysis yields little fruit. …

The last several decades of tort scholarship in this country reflect enthusiasm favoring strict enterprise liability as the end position toward which American tort law, appropriately enough, is moving. This Article argues that no such trend is underway; negligence does now, and will in the future, dominate tort. Professor Gary Schwartz reached these same conclusions in a body of work spanning twenty-plus years, culminating in the Restatement (Third) of Torts: Liability for Physical Harm (Basic Principles) project on which he served as Reporter until his untimely death in 2001. Health Services Social Workers' Activities With People With Disabilities: Predicters Of Community Practice, Richard L. Beaulaurier

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which hospital based social workers were actively involved in community practice on behalf of disabled people. The study attempted to identify what variables influence social workers in health settings to engage in community practice. A sample of 286 social workers employed in 57 different hospital and rehabilitation settings participated in a survey that focused on advocacy and related topics. A questionnaire explored participants' perspectives and the levels and kinds of practice activities they engaged in relation to the needs of people with disabilities. This study reports the results of fifteen experimental asset markets designed to investigate the effects of forecasts on market prices, traders’ abilities to assess asset value, and the link between the two. Across the fifteen markets, the authors investigate alternative forecast-generating processes. In some markets the process produces an unbiased estimate of asset value and in others a biased estimate. The processes generating the biased forecasts, though, are less variable than the process generating the unbiased forecast. The authors find that, in general, periodend asset price reflects private forecasts, regardless of the forecast-generating process. Subsequently, they investigate whether traders’ abilities …

In this work, a mathematical model is constructed and solved to describe the propagation and dispersion of the mass wave of an analyte in a capillary electrochromatography (CEC) column packed with porous adsorbent particles and operated in the analytical mode. The evolution and dynamic behavior of the isoconcentration contours of the concentration of the analyte in the pores of the particles are presented in order to demonstrate the significant impact that the velocity of the intraparticle electroosmotic flow (EOF) encountered in CEC systems could have in reducing the overall intraparticle mass transfer resistance. The NCRP has recently defined RBE values and a new quantity (Gy-Eq) for use in estimation of deterministic effects in space shielding and operations. The NCRP's RBE for neutrons is left ambiguous and not fully defined. In the present report we will suggest a complete definition of neutron RBE consistent with the NCRP recommendations and evaluate attenuation properties of deterministic effects (Gy-Eq) in comparison with other dosimetric quantities.

Auger Timing Effects On Performance Of A Combine Unloading System, Todd Philip Cole

Performance effects were measured on a combine unloading system using three different auger timing settings.Performance measures included maximum startup torque, mean operating torque, standard deviation of the operating torque, flow rate of grain through the system, and mechanical damage to the grain.The performance effects were measured with the system unloading corn and soybeans.

The data were statistically analyzed to check for interactions between the grains and differences between the timings.Using an alpha value of 0.1 it was found that timing 1 for both grains had a 3% (<2.4 L/s) higher flow rate over timings 2 and 3.Timings 1 and 2 for both grains had higher maximum startup torque, about 10% (60 N·m) more torque required than timing 3.In soybeans, timings 2 and 3 also had the smallest standard deviation in operating torque, about 30% (20 N·m) less than timing 1.We were unable to detect any differences in mechanical damage to corn or soybeans as a result of unloading auger timing.These findings suggest that timing 3, with the cross augers lagging 90° behind the vertical unloading auger, may require less maximum startup torque and less variation in torque for the cross augers to effectively fill the loosely filled space left after the vertical auger lifts the grain without extra torque effects of having the augers push against each other as they do in timing 1.
