This paper discusses issues relating to the adoption and implementation of an Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) under the West Africa Monetary Zone (WAMZ) and the conceptual issues relating to ERM and exchange rate regimes. The experiences of the European Union which operated an ERM for quite sometime before the adoption of a single currency - the EURO - are brought to bear on the discussions.

Multi-Level Decomposition Of Probabilistic Relations, Stanislaw Grygiel, Martin Zwick, Marek Perkowski

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two methods of decomposition of probabilistic relations are presented in this paper. They consist of splitting relations (blocks) into pairs of smaller blocks related to each other by new variables generated in such a way so as to minimize a cost function which depends on the size and structure of the result. The decomposition is repeated iteratively until a stopping criterion is met. Topology and contents of the resulting structure develop dynamically in the decomposition process and reflect relationships hidden in the data.

We have learned that a skilled reader must be able to make use of sensory, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic information to accomplish his/her task. These various sources of information appear to interact in many complex ways during the process of reading. Thus, increasingly, reading has been viewed as a phenomenon involving both process (comprehending) and product (comprehension).

In this thesis, I reflect on the writing of fiction for young adults against the backdrop of autobiography. Context is provided by the accompanying opening chapters of a novel for young adults—The Defectives of Ulibar— and excerpts from a journal written during the writing process. Aspects of the creative engagement—open brainstorming, focusing, rewriting—are anchored in the specific locations—a country road, a cabin in the woods, an indoor study—in which the processes occur. In the course of this endeavor, I learn that the writing of fiction, and the reflecting on the writing of fiction, are not after all so different. It …

During animal development, organ size is determined primarily by the amount of cell proliferation, which must be tightly regulated to ensure the generation of properly proportioned organs. However, little is known about the molecular pathways that direct cells to stop proliferating when an organ has attained its proper size. We have identified mutations in a novel gene, shar-pei, that is required for proper termination of cell proliferation during Drosophila imaginal disc development. Clones of shar-pei mutant cells in imaginal discs produce enlarged tissues containing more cells of normal size. We show that this phenotype is the result of both …

This study explored the impact of interdisciplinary team size on student achievement, behavior, attendance, and perceptions about community in an affluent Midwestern suburban middle school. Interdisciplinary teams were divided up in to three-, four- and five-teacher configurations. Data were gathered through the use of the district's School Information and Management System (SIMS) as well as the School Ethical Climate Index (SECI) (Schulte et al., 2002). The dependent variables were (a) academic achievement, (b) student behavior, (c) student attendance, and (d) student perceptions about community. Prior to the development of this project, the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service did not have an online registration system. Workshop participants registered manually; by telephone, by mail or at the door. This was an inefficient use of employee time and other resources. It was also inconvenient for participants. To answer this need, an online registration system was developed. ColdFusion was used as a database-to-web gateway. This database driven system allows the workshop manager to setup and manage the registration pages. The manager and the administrator pages are located on the Extension Services private intranet site. These include workshop management …

This paper discusses how forecasts are affected by the use of real-time data rather than latest-available data. The key issue is this: in the literature on developing forecasting models, new models are put together based on the results they yield using the data set available to the model’s developer. But those are not the data that were available to a forecaster in real time.

How much difference does the vintage of the data make for such forecasts? We explore this issue with a variety of exercises designed to answer this question. In particular, we find that the use of real-time …
