Introduction

The management of patients with residual masses following chemotherapy for advanced seminoma remains a difficult problem with no clear guidelines. While most patients with advanced seminoma achieve a complete or partial response with cisplatin based chemotherapy¹, a significant number will reveal a residual mass on follow up CT scan or MR imaging^2,3. Management options for post chemotherapy residual mass in a case of seminoma include close observation, radiation therapy and excisional surgery. While 80 to 85% of residual masses represent either fibrosis or necrotic tissue needing no further therapy, 10 to 15% may contain viable …

Two-Dimensional Imaging Of Neutral Alkali Atom Samples Using Surface Ionization, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Gregory P. Lafyatis, Andrei Modoran, Tung-Hsiu Shih

We describe the design and characterization of a high resolution, high efficiency detector for two-dimensional imaging of neutral atoms. Incident atoms are surface-ionized by a tungsten-coated hot ribbon and the resulting ions are accelerated into a microchannel plate detector with a phosphor screen output. With this design we can detect individual alkali and other low ionization potential atoms and molecules with a spatial resolution of ∼ 20 μm. We find backgrounds on the order of 30 Hz over an active detection region of 20 mm², a time response of ⩽ 1/30 s, and a detection efficiency of …

The aims of this study were to identify what family environment and parenting practices are related to diabetic adherence and healthy psychological adjustment in children with diabetes as compared to children without diabetes. Participants included 60 families, including 30 families with children with diabetes and 30 age- and gender-matched controls without diabetes. Questionnaires were administered to the target child (the child with diabetes or the control child without) that assessed symptoms of depression, anxiety, self-concept and coping strategies. The successes of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in Afghanistan most likely will accelerate the introduction of UAVs into the military force structure. What emerged in Afghanistan was a tiered observation-detection-targeting system consisting of spacecraft, the Global Hawk UAV, the Predator UAV, and often a spotter on the ground. However, in complex terrain, as in Afghanistan, and in urban situations, airborne assets may be needed much closer to the ground. A low-altitude tier of UAVs—mini UAVs—could serve such a purpose.

Current advocacy on behalf of battered women accused of criminal offenses focuses on the now familiar battered woman syndrome theory. Although the battered woman syndrome theory has enjoyed broad support when asserted by defendants claiming self-defense, the earnestness of the theory's judicial acceptance is questionable. First, in light of both empirical and analytical flaws in the battered woman syndrome theory, the overwhelming judicial acceptance of the theory is inconsistent with courts' growing tendency to scrutinize scientific evidence. Second, courts have been reluctant to extend the battered woman syndrome theory to the defense of duress, where the theory would excuse battered …

Customary international law is understood to require that state practices be followed from a sense of legal obligation, though international lawyers have long puzzled over how those obligations come into being. Recent work applying rational choice theory suggests, unsettlingly, that the entire inquiry is misconceived: practices commonly attributed to obligations are merely behavioral regularities that arise from intersecting state interests, and the role of legal obligations is minimal at best. This Article attempts to explain how the rational choice critique and traditional doctrine may be reconciled. Rational choice theory, it is argued, responds to a genuine problem in the existing …

Despite the tolerance of common reed grass to environmental extremes, mid-water stands in the Winnebago pool lakes of central Wisconsin appear to be diminishing. Formerly occupying shoreline locations, water level manipulations subsequent to dam construction beginning in the 1850's have isolated reed stands off shore. These stands have persisted but casual observations indicate that stand size has been declining. To address this perception we obtained an approximately decadal series of aerial photographs dating back to 1937 for four stands in Lake Poygan. Annual records were available for 1986–94. Using image analysis software, we determined shape and size metrics. Changes in …

Teachers attempting to use communicative language teaching in large EFL classes often encounter challenges that are difficult to overcome. In this article, the authors describe a case study using Team English, an approach promoting communicative language learning in groups within a color-coded team organization. The project director and participating teachers addressed ways to implement and manage group work using cooperative learning concepts. The project showed that, while some difficulties persisted, overall Team English provided potential solutions for most of the problems related to large classes.

Self-access learning often involves the use of authentic materials like newspapers and films. However, for students to fully benefit from such materials, language learning support materials are also needed. There are two main types of support materials: specific materials support the use of a single piece of authentic material; global materials support many pieces of authentic material. Each type serves a different purpose. This study focuses on the production of specific support material for video films at a Thai university. English for Academic Purposes (Science), or EAP Science, is a compulsory course for 3rd year Science undergraduates at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Our aim with the course was to design an effective skills-based course which appealed to students through contemporary content and a variety of student centred learning techniques. In addition to this, we were looking to a course which would be accessible as a group of self study modules to students of all science oriented faculties, and also other universities outside Chulalongkorn.

Confusion about the treatment of merit-based or categorically based aid has revealed the need for a generalized financial and reporting methodology. This article suggests a procedure for financial aid reporting that recognizes differing treatment of need-based aid before and after awarding, offers general information about the theoretical concepts underlying the proposed procedure, and provides an example of how the procedure may be applied.
