Neuroanatomy Of The Common Dolphin (Delphinus Delphis) As Revealed By Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Mri), L. Marino, Keith Sudheimer, D. Ann Pabst, William A. Mclellan, David Filsoof, John I. Johnson

In this study, magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain of an adult common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) were acquired in the coronal plane at 66 antero-posterior levels. From these scans a computer-generated set of resectioned virtual images in orthogonal planes was constructed using the programs VoxelView and VoxelMath (Vital Images, Inc., Michigan State Univ.). Sections in all three planes reveal major neuroanatomical structures. These structures in the adult common dolphin brain are compared with those from a fetal common dolphin brain from a previously published study as well as with MR images of adult brains of other odontocetes. …

Flow calorimetry, which is ideally suited for measuring reactions occurring at the liquid/solid interface, has been used to study the surface chemistry of many types of solids, but little use of it has been made in the study of surface reactions of soils. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the application of flow calorimetry to the study of two fundamental soil chemical processes, namely cation exchange and phosphate sorption. Surface horizon samples of a Typic Acrorthox and a Typic Tropohumult from Puerto Rico, a strong acid cation exchange resin (Dowex 50W-8), and an amorphous Al(OH)₃ were used. …

Flow calorimetry can provide useful information about surface chemical reactions in soils that cannot be obtained readily by other methods. When flow calorimetry is conducted over a range of surface coverages, different sorption heats can be calculated to yield information about how binding energies vary with coverage, i.e., surface heterogeneity. The purpose of this study was to determine heats of exchange for K/Ca and K/Pb systems using flow calorimetry and to evaluate the degree of surface heterogeneity with respect to cation exchange. Assessment of fungal diversity in environmental samples is currently a challenge. Several recently developed molecular methods offer new avenues for determining the presence and diversity of fungi in complex microbial communities. Terminal restriction fragment (TRF) pattern analysis was tested as a method for assessing the fungal molecular diversity of a terrestrial microbial community. Community DNA was isolated from sand samples taken from a pilot-scale petroleum-contaminated land treatment unit. PCR amplification was carried out using primers, one of which was fluorescently labeled, designed to hybridize to conserved sequences in the fungal ribosomal small subunit (18S) or the internal transcribed spacer ITS1–5.8S–ITS2 …

Beef producers in hard-hit drought areas of South Dakota have expressed interest in purchasing baled cornstalks from growers in the eastern part of the state. There is no hard-and-fast rule about what to charge for a bale. Cornstalks, supplemented properly, can supply the nutritional needs for beef cows in moderately good condition during the fall and early winter. The advantage of using cornstalks as roughage for beef cows is the availability and the low cost. In most situations stalks can be used for livestock bedding as well. As in any market, buyer and seller must settle on a price. There …

Identifying The Developmental Stages Of Preserved Eggs Of Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, From Shark Bay, Western Australia, Jeffrey V. Norriss, Gary Jackson

Fisheries Research Reports

The characteristics used to identify 19 developmental stages of preserved eggs of snapper, Pagrus auratus, collected from Shark Bay, Western Australia, during annual plankton surveys, are described and illustrated. A key is provided to enable the age of each egg stage to be estimated based on sea surface temperature and salinity observed during sampling. This report is intended as a reference for inexperienced staff, to ensure that between-year comparisons of snapper spawning biomass, estimated using the daily egg production method, are based on consistent egg staging and ageing methods.

The mechanisms by which juvenile Paleoproterozoic continental crust was derived from the mantle, accreted to southwestern Laurentia ca. 1.78-1.68 Ga, and stabilized as new continental lithosphere have been much debated. This study addresses the problem by assessing the proposed Paleoproterozoic "Farwell Mountain–Lester Mountain suture zone," a broad, complex zone of deformation that may contain the oldest accretionary structures within Paleoproterozoic crust south of the Cheyenne belt. The proposed "suture zone" is mapped in the Park Range of northern Colorado as a northeast-trending belt of imbricated tectonic slivers between ca. 1.79-1.77 Ga Green Mountain rocks to the north and ca. 1.76-1.72 …

The collapse of financial markets and exchange rates across Southeast and East Asia in 1997 and 1998 affected the economies of China and Vietnam much less than those of most other Asian countries. Ironically, the two transitional economies were protected to a great extent by the incomplete nature of their banking reforms and financial market development. The yuan and the dong were not yet traded internationally, securities markets were in very early stages of development, and tax codes, trade regulations, and accounting standards in the two countries did not yet fully conform to international norms. It becomes clear that Ahmadou Kourouma's literary work is marked by the predominance of authentically African techniques of expression (semantax). With this in mind, the present study tries to analyse its linguistic manifestations as techniques of aesthetic creativity and of the enrichment of the French language through the writing of novels. This is why we have serialized and described the expressive neologies in the corpus of our study while pointing out their stylistic effects: the Negro-African imagery. Ahmadou Koruouma's fiction transcends the traditional limits of the novelistic genre. This explains, in part, the irritation of both the French and the African establishments following the appearance of his first novel, Les soleils des independances, in which both writing and language enhance the subversive effect. The banning and subsequent disappearance of Kourouma's play, Tougnatigui ou le Diseur de verite and the dramatic adaptations of his first two novels call for an appreciation of his entire work from a dramaturgical perspective. Ahmadou Kourouma's novel Allah n'est pas oblige belongs to the rich literary vein of texts, both autobiographical and fictitious, that are written in French, for adults, portraying children. This novel stands out however through the young narrator's humor as well as through the tragic nature of its topic: child-soldiers. This article analyzes the humor, presenting it as the only possible and thus the "obliged" mode of narrating and reading the atrocities of recent tribal wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
