The author explores the effects of globalization on international law. Considering the technological advancements of the 20th century propelling globalization, the Article first recounts the history of international law from independent nation-state sovereignty to an international law of cooperation. Next, the author discusses the roles that nongovernmental organizations and other non-state actors play in international law, and how sources of international law may result. Finally, the author concludes that international law must undergo fundamental changes to adapt to a new globalized international system.

This article discusses the diary of Captain Johann Ewald, who commanded Hessian (German) forces in the Revolutionary War. The diary shows that the Hessians were an important part of the British war effort, and also explains some of the criticisms Ewald made of the British officers and their strategies.

Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East: Struggles to Survive and Thrive is about human populations residing in Africa and the Middle East, a diverse region that is connected geographically, culturally, and historically. The African continent is vast and covers 11.7 million square miles, or an area slightly larger than the combined area of the United States and South America (Table 1). Today, the African continent is home to some 771 million people distributed within fifty-four separate countries. Of the world's continents, Africa is by far the most diverse culturally. Although not the first to make the connection, Ensign Albert Niblack of the U.S. Navy wrote most succinctly in 1888: "There seems nothing unreasonable in tracing the origin of much of the dance and ceremonial paraphernalia to customs originating in war." Since that time, numerous scholars have suggested and disputed links between Tlingit carved and painted armor and ceremonial regalia. Beaded regalia, on the other hand has been almost entirely neglected in Northwest Coast ethnographic literature due to notions of authenticity and cultural degeneration. In 1945, anthropologist Erna Gunther for example, explained beaded dance collars as a mere disguise for …

In his letter confirming my participation, Dean Attanasio stated, "This conference, entitled 'Terrorism's Burdens on Globalization,' posits that terrorism poses a systemic threat to globalization."1 I agree with this postulate, but would suggest that terrorism-especially the "catastrophic terrorism" that occurred on September 11, 2001-may so "concentrate the mind wonderfully" 2 that we will finally give the problem of terrorism the kind of attention it deserves3 as well as explore in greater depth the benefits and costs of globalization.
