An Evaluation Study On Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers In Accra, Ghana, Esi Komeley Colecraft

The primary goals of nutrition rehabilitation centers (NRCs) are to recuperate malnourished children and improve caretakers' child feeding practices. Children ( N = 116) and caretakers ( N = 108) newly enrolled in four NRCs in Accra, Ghana were recruited and studied longitudinally at four time points: admission, interim, exit and postexit . Data collection included observations of activities at the NRCs, anthropometry, interviews, dietary assessments, and weighing of NRC foods. Caretaker/child pairs attended the NRCs 33% ± 21% of their total stay, and the majority (78%) discontinued participation before being officially discharged. At exit , ≥60% of children had …

Generalizability of possible seasonality of cardiovascular disease risk factors has not been demonstrated, and, if present, biologic mechanisms remain uncertain. This was addressed by examining cross-sectional seasonal variation in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) subjects, and cross-sectional and longitudinal seasonal variation in and interrelationships between lipids and thyroid hormone levels in a Lipid Variation Influence of Stress (LVIS) study subsample. Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a rapidly growing problem in India, with a 2002 estimate of over four million infected persons. The magnitude of the epidemic varies widely among the different Indian states but is predominantly from heterosexual transmission nationwide. In Tamil Nadu, the infection rates among the general population are now above 1%. Most prevention and control activities are restricted to mass information, education, and communication and targeted programs for the highest risk groups. With an increasingly generalized HIV epidemic, the need to respond to the HIV risk faced by lower risk populations assumes more importance. …

A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess the association between congenital malformations and proximity to hazardous waste sites in Florida. All children whose mother lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation during the years 1996–1998 were in the study. Cases were children with birth defects whose mothers lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation. Controls were children whose mothers also lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation but did not have birth defects. The Hispanic population in Alabama has rapidly increased in recent years, raising public health officials' concern about their health status and use of health care services. This study examined health services' utilization by first-generation Hispanic mothers and children in greater Birmingham. Constructs from the Health Belief Model and the Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization were integrated to form the study's theoretical framework. Children who experience difficulties with peers also tend to experience both concurrent social–psychological difficulties and long-term negative developmental outcomes. Specifically, a significant amount of research has identified peer rejection and isolation as significant precursors to academic troubles and socially deviant behavior (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994; Kupersmidt, Coie, & Dodge, 1990; Parker & Asher, 1987; Parker, Rubin, Price, & DeRosier, 1995). Substantial research and intervention efforts have consequently been dedicated to an understanding of the problem behaviors commonly identified as correlates or antecedents of peer rejection. Function And Design Revisited, David J. Buller

Several analyses of biological function — for example, those of Williams, Millikan, and Kitcher — identify an item's function with what natural selection designed it to do. Allen and Bekoff have disagreed, claiming that natural design is a special case of biological function. I argue that Allen and Bekoff's account of natural design is unduly restrictive and that it fails to mark a principled distinction between function and design. I distinguish two approaches to the phenomenon of natural design — the "trait-centered" approach of Allen and Bekoff and the "organism-centered" approach — and defend the latter.
