Blackstone River water quality data collected during three dry weather surveys of the river was used in a comprehensive mass balance of selected water quality constituents for the river under steady state conditions, and to develop a method that can be applied to separate point and non-point source loads to the river. Mass balances for the river reaches between each dry weather sampling station were completed which isolated point sources, resulting in the identification of those reaches that were major contributors of pollutant loads to the river. Corrosion of high-strength aluminum alloys used for airspace application is an expensive and serious problem. The most significant environmental factor contributing to the corrosion of these alloys is water condensed from humid air and contaminated with soluble chloride salts. The Al 2024 series used for aircraft are particularly susceptible to corrosion in aqueous chloride solutions due to alloying constituents such as copper and other impurities. Chromates are efficient inhibitors of corrosion of aluminum in near neutral aqueous environments containing aggressive anions such as chlorides. Usually, aluminum alloys are initially protected by chromate conversion coatings. Additional polymer coatings are sometimes added …

A Multidimensional Analysis Contrasting Youthful Nonoffenders, Sex Offenders, Violent Offenders, And Status Offenders., Nick Sava Yackovich

This study involved a comparison of 75 adolescent participants divided into four groups. Members of three of the groups were adjudicated delinquent: sex offenders, violent (nonsexual) offenders, and status offenders. A group of nonffenders was also used as a control group. The groups were compared using a contrast analysis of four dependent variables: self-concept, sexual history, cognitive distortions, and alexithymia. Findings of this study reveal a significant relationship with the presence of alexithymia among the offending sample when compared to the nonoffenders. Also evident is a greater self-concept score among the nonoffenders when contrasted with the offenders. Another significant comparison …

The October 2001 issue of the American Journal of International Law contained several editorials on the international law implications of the hijackings of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath. In one respect these editorials resemble other writings on these events in academic and popular media: questions of sex and gender are largely overlooked.' In our view, however, concepts of sex and gender provide a valuable perspective on these devastating actions.' We use the term "sex" here to refer to issues about women as distinct biological beings from men, and the term "gender" to encompass social understandings of femininity and masculinity. …

Continued occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) has been related to a series of disorders, which have been collectively defined as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Based on existing knowledge, the International Standard Organization has developed a standard for the measurement, evaluation and assessment of HTV, which documents the measurement and reporting methodology, the dose-response relationship, and the weighing filter for the assessment of HTV. Some researchers have emphasized the need for the development of improved weighing functions and dose-response relationships, for which it is vital to undertake further systematic investigations in order to enhance our understanding of HAVS, …

This study examined the impact of a hypermedia instructional module, a multi-unit HyperCard stack program entitled The Battle of Philippi , on student test performance in West Virginia History. Three instructional methods were implemented: traditional teacher presentation, student self-paced engagement with the computer-based module, and a hybrid instructional method using traditional instruction supplemented with the computer-based program. Students in the hybrid treatment showed the greatest increase in test performance. The self-paced students showed the next greatest increase. Students in the traditional group showed the least increase. Computer anxiety was not a significant predictor of student test performance in West Virginia …

Adult Leptodactylus silvanimhus are of moderate sized, the head is about as wide as long, and the hind limbs are moderate in length (see Table; also see Heyer and Thompson 2000 for definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodacrylus). The male vocal sac is single and internal. Male forearms are hypertrophied in larger individuals. Adult males have two black thumb spines on each hand and lack chest spines. Individuals lack dorsolateral folds. The toe tips are narrow, not expanded. Females have weakly developed lateral toe fringes and males either have lateral toe ridges or weakly developed fringes. …

Reservoir zonation occurs longitudinally as water enters from a stream into an impoundment. Inflow areas (or riverine zones) are typified by high flow rate and shallow depth whereas areas near the dam (lacustrine zones) characteristically have decreased flow and greater depth. In a typical reservoir, abiotic and biotic variables change somewhat predictably along a continuum from the riverine, through a transitional and into a lacustrine zone which can have a significant affect on the biota. Daphnia lumholtzi, a cladoceran which exhibits extreme cyclomorphosis, is an exotic species introduced to North America within the past twenty-five years. I examined the morphology …

Estrogen replacement therapy appears to delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The mechanism whereby estrogen prevents the pathogenesis of AD is unknown. In the present study, I examined the effects of 17-β-estradiol (E2) on neurite outgrowth from adult mice cortical neurons (AMC) in culture. I found that E2 increases apoE secretion and neurite outgrowth in AMC neurons from wild type mice in a dose dependent fashion. The neurite outgrowth promoting effect of E2 was not observed in AMC neurons derived from age-, sex-, and stain-matched apoE deficient/apoE gene knockout (apoE KO) mice. In Bolivia we have three very valuable Andean grains: amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus), quinoa (Chenopodium quinua), and canihua (Chenopodium pallidicaule), which combined with cereals and legumes can become a complete and balanced food in order to combat the malnutrition that is so widespread in our region. In this study, various nutritional mixes were formulated, based on amaranth and other Andean crops, and the three best were chosen according to nutrition, palatability, and cost. They were: Andean Baby Food, Mixicereal, and Amaranth Cookie, which have an amino acid complement between 79% and 100% and give satisfactory amounts of protein, energy, and minerals …

This article advocates an active, concerted strategy for staking out the middle ground in environmental policy. The middle ground - the domain of "middle of the roaders" - has conventionally been defined by compromise, and as a result lacks any defining content and principles. I propose an aggressive middle that uses enriched sources of information, agency professional judgment, and transparent adaptive management as its components.
