The connected sensor cover problem: Given a query over a sensor network, select a minimum or nearly minimum set of sensors, called connected sensor cover, such that the selected sensors cover the query region, and form a connected network among themselves. In its general form, this problem is known to be NP-hard; In this thesis research, we design the first, fully distributed, strictly localized, scalable, and self-* solution to the connected sensor cover problem. The Self-* concept has been used to include many fault-tolerant properties like self-configuring , self-reconfiguring/self-healing, etc. We will present a self-stabilizing solution and show that this …

Gender roles have always been and will always be, explicitly or implicitly, a topic of literature. The different ways in which gender roles are depicted in the literature of a given period reflect the political and societal state of affairs of that period. Literary works must therefore be critically analyzed to understand them in the context of their times. German fairy tales provide important examples of this. During the past decade, true chemical speciation has become increasingly important for environmental, clinical and nutritional chemists. Chemical speciation, by definition, is the identification of elements and their chemical environment in a given sample. The current and most popular trend for chemical speciation is to utilize hyphenated techniques, thus yielding two-dimensional information. Often, chromatography or an alternate separation technique is used to separate the mixture into its constituent components. Then, each component is interrogated by some spectroscopic technique. Joint visual attention is the ability to follow another person's line of vision. This ability develops toward the end of the human infant's first year, but can be trained as early as 8 months of age. Many studies have correlated infant joint visual attention abilities with language development, but there has been no experimental manipulation to determine whether there is a causal relation between joint visual attention and word learning. This dissertation seeks to answer the question of why the United States is pursuing the deployment of a national missile defense (NMD) system at the present time. The explanation most often given by national security policy makers is that it is being constructed in response to the weapons programs of “rogue states.” States such as North Korea, Iran, and Iraq are seen as actively developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the capability to deliver these weapons to the U.S. mainland. The Role Of Endophyte -Infected Grasses As Biologically Mediated Control Strategies For Plant -Parasitic Nematode Suppression In West Virginia Orchards., James Robert Hendricks

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) cover crops, when infected with the endophytic fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum, have been reported to reduce plant-parasitic nematode populations in some cases but not others. During a 2-year study endophyte-infected Kentucky-31 was compared with endophyte-free Star Grazer under greenhouse and field conditions. The endophyte-mediated suppressive effect was evaluated on four plant-parasitic nematode genera, nematophagous fungi and predacious nematodes. Sprinkle plate and most probable number assays were utilized to evaluate the population dynamics of nematophagous fungi across treatment groups. N. coenophialum infection was periodically evaluated using a Tissue Print Immunoblot Assay. Significant suppression of Pratylenchus crenatus (P < 0.05) by endophyte-infected F. arundinacea was observed 240 days after planting (DAP) in a greenhouse study. Significant suppression of Pratylenchus crenatus (P < 0.05) was observed, at 80, 1,632, 2,934 and 3,713-degree days after planting (DDAP) in microplot experiment 1 (MP1) and at 3,744 DDAP in microplot experiment 2 (MP2). Significantly fewer (P < 0.05) P. crenatus were extracted from Malus domesticus roots under Kentucky-31 cover in comparison to Star Grazer in MP1 but differences were not significant in MP2. Suppression was observed during both field trials, but the suppressive effect of endophyte-infected tall fescue cover varied with time of stand establishment. Populations of Mesocriconema xenoplax, Xiphinema americanum, Paratylenchus projectus, predacious nematodes and nematophagous fungi did not vary significantly (P ≥ 0.05) as a consequence of endophyte-infected F. arundinacea cover. Shoot/root tissue extract and leachate exposure, comparing Kentucky-31 against Star Grazer, immobilized Pratylenchus spp. in some case but not others. Direct exposure to N-formyl loline produced no effect on Pratylenchus spp. or X. americanum survival. Species-specific feeding responses to endophyte-infected and endophyte-free F. arundinacea produced no significant (P > 0.05) …

Double-observer point counts are a new method of inventorying avian fauna that allow detection probabilities to be calculated for each point or species of bird. These detection rates allow estimation of abundances that are more robust than estimates derived from single-observer counts because detection probabilities factor in birds present but not detected. The combined double-observer (DO) technique involves two observers recording data together on a single data sheet. The primary observer dictates the number of each species that is detected while the secondary observer records this information; the secondary observer also notes birds that the primary observer did not detect. …

Although many attempts have been made in the recent years for permeability prediction using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), none of the approaches has employed prespecified test set instead of a randomly generated test set. The methodology for selecting proper pre-specified test set was presented in chapter four of this report. The pre-specified test sets were chosen from a plot of log of permeability versus density. An increase in the incidence of respiratory disease reported in a herbicide producing factory correlates with potential exposure to 3-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMT) and AMT based product 1 (AMT-bp1). In animal studies, no signs of systemic toxicity or irritancy were observed with concentrations up to 25% AMT or 40% AMT-bp1. AMT-bp1 was negative while a dose dependent increase was observed following exposure to AMT in the LLNA. An increase in B220+IgE+ cells was observed at 25% AMT exposure. AMT was negative in the MEST (up to 25%). Following dermal exposure 5 days a week, animals exposed to 25% AMT demonstrated elevated levels …

There are two classifications of femoral implants ñ cemented and cementless. The object of this study was to assess the effect of bone viscoelasticity on cemented and cementless implant stability. A cemented implant design was evaluated via a 3-D FE model. The results showed a small 1.41% increase in stem subsidence with inclusion of bone viscoelasticity. This is explained by the low stresses at the cement-bone interface. A 2-D FE model was utilized to evaluate the effects of coefficient of friction, press-fit and bone viscoelasticity on stem fixation. The push-out load increased with µ for each value of δ, but …

The objective of this study was to determine the technical feasibility of using the effluent of an active mine water treatment facility to rear Oncorhynchus Mykiss (rainbow trout) by performing an extensive water quality analysis, and monitoring and analyzing bioassays. Monthly grab samples were taken and analyzed for dissolved concentrations of typical acid mine drainage (AMD) metals (e.g., iron, manganese, aluminum, magnesium, and calcium). Additionally, sulfate concentrations, alkalinity, acidity, and hardness were measured. Academic advising is an essential connection between student and university. Two types of advising, prescriptive and developmental, are examined in relation to the level of advising (pre-major versus major) and type of advisor (full time advisors or parttime graduate student advisors for pre-majors, and faculty or full-time department advisors for majors) in four academic areas selected for contrast in advising approaches at a large land grant institution. The Effects Of Serotonin On Functionally Diverse Isolated Lamprey Spinal Cord Neurons, I. V. Batueva, James T. Buchanan, N. P. Veselkin, E. I. Suderevskaya, E. A. Tsvetkov

The experiments reported here showed that application of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) (100 µ M) did not induce any significant current through the membranes of any of the spinal neurons studied (n = 62). At the same time, the membranes of most motoneurons and interneurons (15 of 18) underwent slight depolarization (2–6 mV) in the presence of 5-HT, which was not accompanied by any change in the input resistance of the cells. Depolarization to 10–20 mV occurred in some cells (3 of 18) of these functional groups, this being accompanied by 20–60% decreases in input resistance. The same concentration of 5-HT …

Despite the fact that African-Americans suffer from a variety of health problems at disproportionately higher rates than whites, inequities in the medical system make access to care more difficult for minorities. The problem of racial disparities in health care encompasses more than problems of access or payment, however. Communication difficulties between physician and patient and disparate provision of services covered by insurance also may contribute substantially to health disparities between the races. This review canvasses some of the evidence of differential medical treatment and offers some suggestions that may improve the quality of communication between physicians and patients. In addition …
