From Sin To Sickness: A Sociological History Of The Problem Gambler, Bo Jason Bernhard

Long before medical and psychological experts determined that problem gambling qualified as a mental illness, moral experts determined that this problem could be "diagnosed" as a sin. This research examines pre-1915 gambling literature to determine the ways in which people who gambled too much were identified, named, and "treated" socially. Interestingly, virtually all of our current diagnostic criteria were identified by moral thinkers hundreds of years ago. Implications for the sociological history of problem gambling, the sociology of mental illness, and the sociology of religion and morality are discussed.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is an inherited neuropsychological disorder affecting 3% to 5% of the school-aged population of the United States and having no identified single cause. The primary treatment recommended for those suffering from attentional deficits is multimodal, which includes psychostimulant medication in the form of methylphenidate (Ritalin) and behavioral/educational interventions. However, there is a subset of sufferers who, though taking psychostimulant medications and undergoing behavioral and educational interventions, continue to suffer the symptoms of attentional deficits: distractibility, impulsiveness and aggressive behavior; Those affected by acquired brain injuries as the result of some external trauma or neurological disorder suffer …

Tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Notostraca) were reared under normoxic (19--21 kPa O2), moderate (10--13 kPa O2) or severe (1--3 kPa O2) hypoxic conditions to investigate the effects of developmental Po2 (partial pressure of oxygen) on adult metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. Growth rates were independent of developmental Po2, although adult body size was significantly smaller in tadpole shrimp reared under severe hypoxic conditions relative to those reared under normoxic conditions. Most organisms increase respiratory surface area in response to hypoxic exposure. Yet growth of the epipodites (proposed respiratory structure) relative to mass (Y = aMb) was significantly reduced …

Several methods of analysis were used to test the robustness of sea level signals recorded in Middle to lower Upper Cambrian shallow-water carbonate rocks in the southwestern United States and to refine stratigraphic correlation of this interval. Embedded Markov chain and cycle architectural analysis define the high-frequency accommodation signal, whereas cycle grouping pattern and facies proportions analysis reveals low-frequency sequence stratigraphic accommodation changes. Gamma analysis and Fischer plots were unsuccessful in deciphering the signature of high or low frequency signals; Six low-frequency accommodation events are present in the Middle to lower Upper Cambrian Highland Peak Formation. This research study investigated whether college students' epistemological beliefs (i.e. certain knowledge, simple knowledge, fixed ability, quick learning, and omniscient authority) could predict negative stressors and/or reactions to stress in their college experience. Based on responses to two self-assessment inventories and a demographic survey; analysis of the data suggests that over and above contributions from demographics (i.e. gender, ethnicity, age, and education level), certain dimensions of epistemological beliefs contributed significantly to the prediction of negative stress in college students. This thesis proposes that US policy is structurally flawed toward Iraq and the Middle East in general. This structural flaw in US policy-making is a result of ignoring the regional considerations of the Middle East as a subsystem. Current US strategy toward Iraq is doomed to fail because of the unique structural considerations in the Middle East and the failure of policy-makers to recognize them; The thesis begins with a theoretical examination of the Middle East subsystem, based on principles from international systems theory. The main purpose of this study was to test an adaptation of the Service Quality Gap Model developed by Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry in an atypical service industry---the media---in order to determine whether gaps exist between consumer perceptions of news quality and news directors' perceptions of news quality. For the first time in its 212 year history, the United States Marshals Service created a position for employees specifically designated to assist district offices experiencing administrative and operational problems. This move was promoted by a recruiting session in April of 2001 which was designed entirely to train individuals for the job entitled GS-082. This move is the result of the agency's overall need for more labor. Landslides represent one of the most severe natural disturbances in tropical rainforests. The loss of the topsoil layer is detrimental to plant establishment and plant succession as it contains the soil seed bank, as well as the majority of the nutrients essential for plant growth. In this study, I introduced bird perches to six Puerto Rican landslides with three types of surfaces (bare, climbing fern, grass) to test the limitation of bird-dispersed forest seeds in landslides and to accelerate forest seedling establishment. The Enzyme Inhibition Bioassay 96 (EIB 96) is one such field-screening tool; The EIB 96 is an assay that can detect the presence of organophosphate and carbamate compounds, providing scientists with valuable information to focus their future sampling efforts. Harris lines (HL) and enamel hypoplasia (EH) are two non-specific indicators of stress, commonly used in the reconstruction of the health status in past and present populations. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between these two markers. To achieve this aim, a sample of 136 individuals from two archaeological sites (Az-71 and Az-l40) from northern Chile was analyzed. HL and EH showed no correlation in terms of presence absence at the individual level. In addition, HL and EH, by age of the individual at the time of the defect formation, showed a completely …

The ecology of Tamias palmeri is investigated. Presence-absence and relative abundance of T. palmeri are related to principle component scores of habitat variables using logistic regression and multiple linear regression, respectively. Relative abundance of Tamias palmeri estimated with live capture-recapture was positively correlated with shrub cover and negatively correlated with slope. Timing of emergence from dens by juveniles was earlier and weights of juveniles were greater in ravine areas as compared to upslope areas. Track plates were not correlated with trap captures. Track plate success was not correlated with habitat variables. The results of this study were used to build …

A descriptive, correlational research design was used to identify parental perceptions concerning the use of peak flow meters (PFM) in their children. The sample consisted of 20 parents who were accessed through outpatient asthma allergy clinics. The questionnaire and semi-structured interview were utilized as tools and analyzed using inferential statistics and content analysis. The main objectives of this thesis were to generate preliminary data on the potential impacts of major categories of dust suppressants on the quality of urban runoff and to evaluate changes in the chemical composition of soils to which suppressants were applied. Eleven individual plots were topically treated with petroleum-based products, ligninsulfonate, acrylic polymers, magnesium chloride, fiber mulch, and non-petroleum-based products and one plot did not receive treatment (control). A two-year mark recapture study was conducted on the desert pocket mouse, Chaetodipus penicillatus sobrinus on a relic population within the city of Las Vegas, NV. Demographic information and movement patterns were documented and microhabitat selection analyzed. Chaetodipus. p. sobrinus activity correlated with ambient temperatures, during colder months (Ta = 15°C) C. p. sobrinus became dormant. Sex ratio was 1:1 except during the early spring in which males were favored. Reproduction occurred between March and September each year. Male C. p. sobrinus has significantly larger home range estimates compared to females. The maximum dispersal distance was 133 meters and sex-biased …

Current research suggested a relationship between alcohol availability and problems, including suicide, and car accidents. However, the relationship between alcohol availability and alcohol related hospital admissions, such as acute intoxication and liver damage, has not been widely explored. Measuring alcohol availability by alcohol outlet density and using data for alcohol related hospital admissions in the city of Chicago, a Poisson regression analysis determined that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of African-Americans, higher poverty level, and a greater density of alcohol outlets had a greater number of alcohol related hospital admissions than other neighborhoods. Delirium, which can be reversible and preventable, is one of the most significant complications affecting the hospitalized elderly today. The purpose of this descriptive retrospective chart review was to determine if medical records contain sufficient evidence to identify elderly patients who were at risk for developing delirium within 72 hours of hospital admission, and if accepted, evidence-based criteria were used to document the acute confusion. The chart's of 100 patients, at least 65 years of age, admitted to a rural hospital were reviewed retrospectively. It is my thesis that victims of domestic violence enter formal action against their abusers with specific goals in mind particular to each woman's life situation. Plasma markers of muscle cell damage, creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase, were measured in the serum of 32 endurance exercised horses during a 50-mile endurance ride to determine if supplemental vitamin E singly or in combination with vitamin C could be effective in preventing exercise-induced muscle damage. Blood was collected by jugular venipuncture prior to and at 0, 23, 35, and 50 miles of a 50-mile endurance ride. Both creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase increased significantly pre-exercise to post-exercise in both vitamin E and vitamin E plus C groups. Vitamin E plus C was no more effective in preventing muscle …

This study explores the economic relationships between women's schooling, fertility rates, and contraceptive use in Tanzania where population growth and fertility rates are among the highest in the world and aggravate the already ailing economy. Two models are used: fertility and contraceptive use. The study surveys women ages 15 to 49 drawing on 1996 data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The study finds that women's schooling and other socioeconomic variables are important factors in explaining reproductive behavior. The fertility model indicates that education levels are consistently associated with lower fertility rates, while the contraceptive use model indicates that …

Restlessness occupied a significant spot in the literature of many prominent writers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries including George Herbert, Christopher Marlowe, and John Milton. Herbert's perspective alone differs from the others; George Herbert's perspective is framed in "The Pulley." His view that restlessness is a divine treasure is unique to him and is manifested in various avenues. First, restlessness as a virtue is manifested in his own writing. This thesis investigates the feasibility of combining ion exchange and biological reduction to remove perchlorate contamination from waters and eliminate it from the environment. Perchlorate can be removed from water by ion exchange. However, regeneration of these resins creates a waste stream, concentrating the perchlorate and other components in the regenerant solution. This waste stream can then be channeled to a biological reactor where perchlorate is reduced by microorganisms. Perchlorate-reducing microorganisms are ubiquitous in nature, yet biological treatment of these waste streams would expose these microorganisms to high salt or ammonium concentrations and high perchlorate levels. The remains of the Devil Peak Shasta Ground Sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastensis) is one of the most complete fossils of this species ever discovered. The study's objective is to use the dimensions of the Devil Peak sloth and Aden Crater sloth (the only other complete skeleton of this species known) to characterize the morphology of Nothrotheriops shastensis. The cytokines interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are produced during an immune reaction and cause inflammation and swelling of the surrounding tissue. AD is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by well-defined neuropathologic entities. Both IL-1 and IL-6 are present in senile plaques and may cause a self-propagating inflammatory process that contributes to the disease processes of AD; Somatostatin (SRIF) is a small, inhibitory neuropeptide present throughout the CNS.
