Tidal Motion Enhancement Around Islands, Zygmunt Kowalik, Aleksey V. Marchenko

Tidally-generated, trapped motions can significantly enhance and modify sea level and currents in the island proximity. The analytical solution for incident waves interacting with a cylindrical island with a circular sill has been constructed to investigate this phenomenon. To derive solutions for the scattering problems simple Sverdrup and Kelvin waves are used as incident waves. The amplification of the signal along the island perimeter has shown to be a function of frequency, relative dimensions of the island and the circular sill surrounding the island, relative sill depth, and the bottom friction. Physical and biological controls on the springtime distributions of Pseudocalanus moultoni and P. newmani on Georges Bank are examined by assimilating observations into a coupled physical-biological model. Monthly snapshots of abundance are derived from U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank broad-scale surveys during 1997. The forward problem is posed as an advection-diffusion-reaction equation for the copepod concentration. The adjoint method of data assimilation is used to invert for the biological sources and sinks implied by the observed changes in abundance between surveys and the flow during the intervening period. The effects of polyamines as odorants to goldfish olfactory receptors were investigated by in vivo electrophysiological recordings. Electro-olfactogram (EOG) recordings indicated that polyamines (putrescine, cadaverine and spermine) are potent olfactory stimuli for goldfish with estimated electrophysiological thresholds of 10-100nM, similar to that for L-arginine, the most stimulatory amino acid. Although thresholds were similar, the magnitude of the EOG responses to intermediate and high concentrations of polyamines dwarfed those to amino acids and single amine containing compounds (amylamine and butylamine). The EOG responses to 0.1mM putrescine, cadaverine and spermine were, respectively, 4.2x, 4.3x and 10.3x that of the standard, 0.1mM L-arginine. …

Salt marsh pools are shallow, steep-sided depressions that remain flooded throughout a tidal cycle and provide important habitat for nekton (fish and decapod crustaceans). Although New England pools are relatively unstudied, efforts are underway to expand pool habitat through an open marsh water management technique know as ditch plugging. The purpose of this study was to quantify pool geomorphic and geographic characteristics, to determine distribution of vegetative cover types and nekton species, and to evaluate effects of ditch plugging on nekton use of pools.

Peroxisomes function in b-oxidation of very long- and long-chain fatty acids, dicarboxylic fatty acids, bile acid intermediates, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes, pristanic acid and xenobiotic carboxylic acids. These lipids are mainly chain-shortened for excretion as the carboxylic acids or transported to mitochondria for further metabolism. Several of these carboxylic acids are slowly oxidized and may therefore sequester coenzyme A (CoASH). To prevent CoASH sequestration and to facilitate excretion of chain-shortened carboxylic acids, acyl-CoA thioesterases, which catalyze the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to the free acid and CoASH, may play important roles. Numerical models have become increasingly important tools for the study of marine ecosystems. While these models serve as valuable research and heuristic tools, they are not yet to the point of producing reliable predictions upon which to base management decisions. Further, most existing models of coastal systems have been constructed for relatively deep estuaries rather than shallow, nearshore systems which receive the bulk of anthropogenic nutrient loading and experience the most extreme degradation in water quality. This dissertation examines both literary and non-literary works to illustrate how leftist writing was profoundly influenced by notions of eugenics which circulated widely in Depression-era America, though often just beneath the surface. One of the most popular movements during the Great Depression was the attempt to prove that certain groups of the American population were "unfit" and that society should take intentional steps to intervene in citizens' reproductive rights. This eugenics doctrine was so pervasive that it became embodied in a variety of texts, including many "leftist" texts, thereby producing an ideological crisis for many of these writers. The purpose of this study was to first, describe in the birth mother's voice, the relinquishment experience and her perception of nursing interventions, while second, creating an inventory of nursing interventions. Ecosystems with submersed vegetation are relatively shallow, physically stable and of moderate hydrodynamic energy. Submersed vegetation affect hydrodynamic friction for currents and waves resulting in increased overall frictional loss. Seagrasses shelter the sediment bed and reduce wind-wave resuspension. Bed sheltering factors were estimated from previous flume data on Laguna Madre seagrass species. Data from Laguna Madre indicate that total suspended material levels for bare areas are about an order of magnitude higher than some areas with submersed vegetation. Early detection of genetic mutations is important for control of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Early detection requires methods that detect small amounts of mutated DNA in very large amounts of normal or wild type DNA. One method to detect mutated DNA is the ligase detection reaction (LDR). Since its inception LDR has evolved greatly from a simple detection reaction after PCR amplification to PCR/RE/LDR, a scheme which uses nucleoside base analogs in PCR to convert wild type sequences to sequences containing restriction endonuclease (RE) sites which can then be cleaved leaving only mutant sequences for detection by LDR. …

In this study, 23 molecular lineages within the species-rich sea star genus Leptasterias subgenus Hexasterias section Camtschatica and an outgroup Leptasterias polaris were examined for patterns of mtDNA nucleotide sequence variation and evolution. Two separate regions of the mitochondrial genome were sequenced. The first region (549-bp) spanned the partial 3' ends of the 12s rRNA and 16s rRNA genes, complete tRNAs for glutamic acid and threonine, and complete putative control region. This study examines the issues and contradictions of identity formation found in contemporary Irish-American cultural performances. Using a theoretical language grounded in post-structuralism and cultural studies, this examination hopes to demonstrate the primacy of performance and theatre in the formation of culture, Irish-American specifically, or otherwise. The performances featured in the study are: Riverdance, St. Patrick's Day parades, pub performances, and improv theatre.
