Modern phylogenetic methods and molecular data can be powerful tools for examining the evolution of organisms. Of particular interest are historical processes that influenced the diversity and distribution of modern taxa. I examined the evolutionary history of two families of birds, the barbets and toucans (Ramphastidae) and the trogons (Trogonidae). Both groups occur in three disjunct tropical regions, a pattern that offers no simple historical explanation. In addition to their distributions, these two families are also similar in that they are relatively ancient groups but have highly conserved and distinctive morphologies. A fluorescent binding assay was developed to investigate the effects of site-directed mutagenesis on the binding affinity and binding specificity of the chitin-binding domain of chitinase A1 from Bacillus circulans WL-12. The chitin-binding domain (ChBD) was genetically fused to the N-terminus of the green fluorescent protein, GFP. The polyhistidine-tagged hybrid protein was expressed in Escherichia coli under the dose-dependent regulation of the araBAD promoter and purified using metal affinity-, chitin- or ion-exchange chromatography. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of perception of social support, privacy preference and level of depression on marital adjustment for couples presenting for infertility treatment. Data was obtained from three infertility clinics in Louisiana from January 1, 2001 through October 1, 2001. Forty-seven couples presenting for infertility treatment completed four questionnaires measuring marital adjustment, perception of social support, privacy preference and level of depression. Demographic and descriptive information was gathered from an information sheet completed by the subjects. Almost from the very beginning of the digital age, people have sought better ways to communicate with computers. This research investigates how computers might be enabled to understand natural language in a more humanlike way. Based, in part, on cognitive development in infants, we introduce an open computational framework for visual perception and grounded language acquisition called Experience-Based Language Acquisition (EBLA). EBLA can “watch” a series of short videos and acquire a simple language of nouns and verbs corresponding to the objects and object-object relations in those videos. The ecology of bollworms, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), on Bollgard and Bollgard II cottons, Gossypium hirsutum L., was studied in field and laboratory experiments. Neonate bollworm larvae were placed on selected components of cotton squares and flowers from non-Bollgard, Bollgard, and Bollgard II cotton varieties. Larval survival was higher on flower anthers and square anthers than on other floral parts for each cultivar. Bollworm survival was lowest on all Bollgard II floral structures. To evaluate larval behavior on Bollgard cotton, first instar bollworms were placed on terminals of non-flowering and flowering cotton plants. Larvae were recovered lower on Bollgard cotton than …

The goal of this dissertation research is to investigate the defense systems of strawberry plant by characterizing the genes and their products involved in plant disease-resistance. Pathogenesis-related proteins, including hydrolytic enzymes chitinases and â-1,3- glucanases, have been known to be induced in plants upon infection with various pathogens. Highest total chitinase activity was found in strawberry crown, whereas root, petiole, fruit, leaf, and runner showed successively lower activities. Chitinase isoform analysis showed that up to six acidic and two basic isoforms were present in various organs. The total chitinase activity was stable at 50oC. Adsorption-desorption and transport behavior of pesticides are important processes that influence the amount retained by the soil and that which is susceptible to runoff or movement within the soil profile. Kinetic batch experiments were used to study the adsorption-desorption behavior of metolachlor (a non-ionic herbicide) and deltamethrin (a pyrethroid insectcide) in soils, and atrazine (a triazine) in sugarcane mulch residue. A characteristic feature of this disorder is that the movements are partially or completely relieved with leg motions. Attempts to find the underlying pathology have been unsuccessful. Thus, there are no objective physiological tests to diagnose this condition. As a mixture of scientific and engineering approaches, the framework is based on four key techniques: adaptive data compression based on space-filling curves, octree-based visibility and occlusion culling, predictive caching based on machine learning, and scalable data reduction based on parallel and distributed processing. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique that can amplify a specific DNA segment in vitro using two site specific primers that hybridise to opposite DNA strands. The method produces large amounts of specific DNA from a complex DNA template in a single enzymatic reaction within a matter of hours. Reaction mixture contains a double helix DNA, two target specific primers, dNTPs, a DNA polymerase and a Mg2+ containing buffer. Antarctic krill Euphausia superba spawned on the outer continental shelf of the west Antarctic Peninsula can be entrained into the Southern Front of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and transported across the Scotia Sea to South Georgia. A time-dependent, size-structured, physiologically based krill growth model was used to assess the food resources that are needed to sustain Antarctic krill during transport across the Scotia Sea and to allow them to grow to a size observed at South Georgia. Initial Lagrangian simulations provide trajectories that are followed by particles released on the west Antarctic Peninsula shelf. Pelagic phytoplankton concentrations along these trajectories …

As part of an experiment to study wind-driven coastal circulation, 17 hydrographic surveys of the middle to inner shelf region off the coast of Newport, OR (44.65°N, from roughly the 90 m isobath to the 10 m isobath) were performed during Summer 1999 with a small, towed, undulating vehicle. The cross-shelf survey data were combined with data from several other surveys at the same latitude to study the relationship between upwelling intensity and wind stress field. The evolution of oceanographic conditions in the upwelling region off northern Chile (18°-24°S) between 1996 and 1998 (including the 1997-1998 El Niño) is presented using hydrographic measurements acquired on quarterly cruises of the Chilean Fisheries Institute, with sea surface temperature (SST), sea level, and wind speeds from Arica (18.5°S), Iquique (20.5°S), and Antofagasta (23.5°S) and a time series of vertical temperature profiles off Iquique. Spatial patterns of sea surface temperature and salinity from May 1996 to March 1997 followed a normal seasonal progression, though conditions were anomalously cool and fresh. A model of the salt balance in the Chesapeake Bay is discussed, which takes into account only time-dependent riverine input and mean ocean-bay exchange. Estimates of (spatial) mean bay salinity are made using two different data sources: a 16 year record of surveys taken by the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program, and a 10 year record of hydrographic sections taken in the lower bay by the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University. (First Paragraph) The Gulf of Alaska (GOA) continental shelf encompasses approximately 370,000 km², or about 13% of the U.S. continental shell and supports a rich and diverse marine ecosystem including some of the largest commercial fisheries in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Of particular economic importance is the salmon fishery, which was worth on the order of $170 million (landed value) in 2000 accrued from a catch of over 100 million fish. However, there is considerable variability on both interannual and longer time scales in harvest and recruitment success to this and other GOA fisheries. Of recent interest …

The Chesapeake Bay benthic index of biotic integrity (B-IBI) was developed to assess benthic community health and environmental quality in Chesapeake Bay. The B-IBI evaluates the ecological condition of a sample by comparing values of key benthic community attributes (“metrics”) to reference values expected under non-degraded conditions in similar habitat types. It is therefore a measure of deviation from reference conditions.

The B-IBI is used by the Chesapeake Bay Benthic Monitoring Program, which is conducted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) and by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ). The program contains two primary elements: …

This chapter will identify and examine the major legal issues raised by the development and proliferation of technologies involved in assisted reproduction. It will review the application of existing legal principles, statutes and common law rules to these issues, and will illustrate the uncertainty present in the current legal regime in Canada. The chapter will then evaluate the need for a unified regulatory framework for reproductive technologies ("RTs").' While the focus of the chapter is an identification and review of the legal issues, it should be understood that these are shaped in a moral, ethical and social context.

Mating Behaviors In Parasitic Wasps, Christine Landek

Mating behavior was examined in two species of parasitic wasps, Spalangia endius and Nasonia vitripennis. Contact, mounting, courting, and copulatory behavior were investigated for both species. Observations over reencounter behaviors were also examined. Male mate choice of virgin or mated females was looked at for N. vitripennis. N. vitripennis tended to initially contact both virgins and mated females. However, males copulated more with virgins. The behaviors that showed up most consistently in both species were wing fanning, leg tapping, and dorsal mounting. When the wasps would reencounter each other after copulation, S. endius would not court again, whereas N. vitripennis …
