Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this paper, I discuss the figure of professor Malik Solanka, the protagonist of Salman Rushdie's latest novel, Fury (2001), and his attempts at constructing a fairy tale utopia as a means of establishing his identity. I try to elucidate this problem referring to the concepts of the fairy tale utopian as formulated by J. R. R. Tolkien, Ernst Bloch, and Jack Zipes, as their propositions can be regarded as the most effective exponents of the utopian imagination and seem very applicable to Rushdie's utopian attempts. The national identity of the Dominican Republic is based on an idealized story of three cultural roots-- Spanish, African, and Taíno--with a selective amnesia of the tragedies and struggles inherent to the processes of colonial domination and resistance. Further, African, Taíno and mixed AfroMestizo culture have been marginalized in favor of nationalist ideologies of progress and civilization found in the embrace of Hispanidad and Catholicism. In such a way, Dominicans have been disconnected from their African, their indigenous, and their mixed Afro-Mestizo Criollo (Creole) ancestry and cultural heritage, even though it is these ancestries and heritages which mark Dominicans with …

Antibodies are proteins of the immune system that exhibit exquisite specificity to their binding partners, called antigens. Binding occurs at the hypervariable region (Fv), which is capable of discriminating even enantiomeric molecules. By targeting on the DNA sequences that code for Fv and expressing it as a protein, the binding properties of an antibody can be assessed. In this project, the heavy and light chains of the Fv region (Vh and V[_) of an anti-amino acid antibody (anti-phenylalanine 67.36) were linked using a short nucleotide linker and four primers designed from previously determined sequences of Vh and V|_. Site-Specific Modification Of De Novo Designed Coiled-Coil Polypeptides With Inorganic Redox Complexes, Anna Fedorova, Michael Y. Ogawa

A stepwise procedure for preparing of site-specific binuclear metallopeptides is described. The modification procedure involves the alkylation of a cysteine side chain by reaction with [Ru(bpy)(2)(phen-ClA)](2+), where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-ClA = 5-chloroacetaniido-1,10-phenanthroline, followed by the coordination of a ruthenium pentammine complex to a histidine residue located elsewhere along the sequence. The apo and metalated versions of the peptides C10H21(30-mer) and H10C21(30-mer) display circular dichroism spectra having minima at 208 and 222 nm, with theta(222)/theta(208) = 1.04 to indicate that these peptides exist as a-helical coiled-coils in aqueous solution. The purpose is to determine whether students who have received education that included diversity and multicultural content see themselves as developing cultural competence.

This phenomenological investigation used an inductive qualitative research approach with multiple instruments and processes including a survey, interviews, classroom observations, concept maps, and classroom materials for data. The results suggest that middle school science teachers' ability to teach science in a connected and coherent fashion may be tied to their mental schema for organizing science ideas, curriculum materials, and their reflections on what they are teaching and why.

This Article confronts this clash between legal and scientific perspectives on consciousness by proposing new ways to structure the voluntary act requirement so that it incorporates the insights of modern science on the human mind. Part I examines the criminal law's voluntary act requirement, particularly in the context of the MPC's influential provision, which reflects the law and psychology of the era in which the MPC was originally developed--the 1950s. This study was conducted in effort to increase class participation and excitement about science in an urban science classroom. It focused on a class of ninth-grade students enrolled in a secondary general science class. The subjects were given a problem-based learning (PBL) project that required them to research an endangered species found in North America. Observations regarding engagement and behavior were recorded daily in a journal. The results show that excitement and participation increased for most, but not all students. However, no decrease in engagement was seen. Classroom behavior also improved during the course of the study. The PBL method …

In recent years, countless Christians have found evangelism a difficult and even baffling scriptural mandate. Those we encounter, particularly young people, are often entirely unfamiliar with the basics of the Gospel. Traditional means of communicating the faith, from cold-calling to mass-mailings, simply no longer speak the language of the culture.

Brad Kallenberg recognizes that evangelism, even in our own backyard, has become a cross-cultural task. Like missionaries serving in foreign countries, we must become "students of the host culture." Much more than a "sinner's prayer," conversion requires a change of social identity.

This collection of Pierce's essays traces the evolution of her thinking about natural law theory--and, more broadly, about talk of "natures" as normatively significant--over a period of 30 years. We see her move from a wholesale rejection of such talk, in her influential 1971 piece "Natural Law Language and Women," to a qualified admission that it can have its liberatory uses. Yet she maintains throughout that, progressive potential or no, natural law is far inferior to Kantian notions of rights and autonomy as a foundation for ethical thought.

The distribution and function of aquaporins (AQPs) have not previously been defined in sweat glands. In this study, AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 mRNA were demonstrated in rat paw by reverse transcription (RT)–PCR, but AQP2 and AQP4 were not. AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 protein were confirmed in these tissues by immunoblotting. AQP1 was identified in capillary endothelial cells by immunohistochemical labeling, but not in sweat glands or epidermis. Abundant AQP3 expression was seen in basal levels of epidermis, but not in sweat glands. AQP2 and AQP4 were not observed in either skin or sweat glands. Habitat Use Of Urban Bats In Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Jane Robertson

During the summers of 1998-2000, the Anabat II bat detector system was placed in a mosaic of habitats within Springfield, Missouri and surrounding rural areas in southern Missouri to compare the activity indices of nine bat species between urban and rural environments. A total of 1,876 echolocation call sequences was recorded, identified to species and analyzed; 1,066 were from 42 Springfield sites, and 810 were from 22 rural locations. For all species combined, urban bat activity tended to be higher than rural activity, but those differences were only significant at the reading taken 3 hours after sunset. This study investigated whether there were specific behavioral patterns and/ or Auxiliary traits of individuals who choose a career as a Firefighter/ Paramedic. The study also determined if there are certain motivational factors that influence these individuals to enter this profession. Additionally, this study determined whether job satisfaction as a Firefighter/Paramedic could be predicted based on the individuals behavioral type, personality trait(s) and/or the motivational factors that influenced their career choice. This study analyzed 272 responses to the Long/ Dziuban Checklist Survey; the researcher-designed questionnaire on motivational factors; and the researcher-designed questionnaire on job satisfaction.
