Synthesis Of Isomers Of Organotin Substituted Polyoxotungstates And Comparison Of The Antitumor Activity Of Isomers, Xiaohong Wang, Jutao Liu, Rongchang Zhang, Bin Li, Jingfu Liu

A comparison of the antitumor activity against two human tumor cell lines for the isomers of organometallo-substituted polyoxometalates is reported. The polyoxometalate skeletal isomers affect the antitumor activity. It is observed that the order of the antitumor activity of complexes is consistent with the order of the oxidation ability of polyanions among a couple of isomers possessing the same polyanion and organometallic group whether in the series of monosubstituted complexes or trisubstituted complexes as well in the sandwich compounds.

Using Simple Marginal Analysis And Density Management Diagrams For Prescribing Density Management, Thomas J. Dean, S. Joseph Chang

This article presents a procedure to produce management regimes that not only maximize land value but also reflect stand development with simple marginal analyses of the accumulation and control of growing stock. An upper limit of growing stock is determined by translating management objectives into a future desired structure, and with this value as a guide for thinning age, marginal analysis is used to determine the planting density and the residual basal area after thinning. The procedure is demonstrated for a hypothetical loblolly pine plantation growing on land with a site index of 65 ft at 25 yr. The effects …

Anthropogenic landscapes are those that have been modified, to varying degrees, by human. Their development is affected by the over-use of natural landscapes in the past such as overgrazing, frequent fires, or excessive depletion of forests. Anthropologists analyzing land-use intensification are now realizing the promise of geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensingfor their research. A literature review of case studies done on varying anthropogenic landscapes will highlight how GIS can give practical integration of geographic spatial structures (habitation, soils, river drainage) to past and current relationships between the environment and human systems when combined with local-level knowledge. Hunting and gathering along with horticultural societies provide a basis for understanding contemporary ideologies. Such groups are generally labeled as egalitarian societies from their status and treatment of females. A survey of traditional hunters-gatherers and horticultural societies compared their mythological charters on gender ideologies to the dally interactions of gender roles in order to determine their level of influence on the culture. Traditional societies are thought to be a basis to observe gender stratification among all known societies. The purpose of this study was to determine the aspirations of rural youth and to identify perceived support for and barriers to achieving their goals. The population included all seniors enrolled in public and private high schools in a five county area of northwest Iowa. The students were asked to indicate their educational and occupational aspirations. Likert-type scales were used to measure perceptions regarding support for and barriers to achieving their goals. Tenets of achievement motivation theory were observed in the rural students. Town and farm students alike had diverse educational and occupational aspirations. A high level of congruence was …

Professor Addicott’s article addresses the future legal ramifications that the fledgling intelligent design movement and the scientific concept known as the Anthropic Principle will have on the teaching of Darwinian evolution in public schools. Both ideas are associated with the concept that an “unnamed” intelligent designer is responsible for the creation and sustainment of life. Predicting that the Supreme Court will ultimately allow, for instance, school boards to incorporate intelligent design in the science curriculum, he believes neither of the two ideas violate the Establishment Clause and cannot be “dismissed as yet another back door attempt by creationists to get …

Almost forty years after the enactment of Title VII, women's struggle for equality in the workplace continues. Although Title VII was intended to "break[] down old patterns of segregation and hierarchy," the American workplace remains largely gender-segregated. Indeed, more than one-third of all women workers are employed in occupations in which the percentage of women exceeds 80%. Even in disciplines in which women have made gains, top status (and top paying) jobs remain male-dominated while the lower status jobs are filled by women. This pattern of gender segregation, in turn, accounts for a substantial part of the persistent wage gap …

Forest overstory composition influences both light and nutrient availability in the mixed boreal forest. The influence of stand composition on understory cover and biomass was investigated on two soil types (clay and till deposits). Four forest composition types were considered in this study: aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and a mixture of balsam-fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss). Within-community species-area relationships were examined for vascular plants and epiphytic lichens on Populus spp within 100 treed patches in an area of less than 4 km² in the aspen parkland of south-central Alberta, Canada. Both plants and lichens were sampled on three scales (patch-scale and two within-patch scales). This study is one of the few to demonstrate scale-dependent species-area relationships at a small scale and highlights the importance of multi-scale sampling in ecology.
