The metallic biomaterials are very well known among various biomaterials. Stainless steel was used successfully as an implant material in the surgical field, then Vitallium, cobalt based alloys were used as implant materials. Titanium is the newest metallic biomaterial among three main metallic biomaterials, stainless steels, Co-based alloys and titanium alloys. These materials are used for the instrumentation replacing failed hard tissue, for example, artificial hip joints, artificial knee joints, bone plates, dental implants and in similar applications. Biocompatibility characteristics of titanium alloys make it the preferred choice for such applications, additional factors being light weight, excellent mechanical properties, corrosion …

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick Jan 2002

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a selective review of Systems: New Paradigms for the Human Sciences, edited by Gabriel Altmann and Walter A. Koch (Berlin: Walter de Gryter, 1998). It is selective because it is impossible to engage such a varied collection of systems-theoretic essays in a review of reasonable length. To invoke a relevant dialectical idea: the characteristic strength of any system is often also its characteristic weakness. One strength and weakness of the systems field is its great diversity, and this diversity is reflected in this volume by the range of subjects addressed in its 27 articles. I will not …

An Enzo White Paper: A New Judicial Standard For A Biotechnology "Written Description" Under 35 U.S.C. § 112, ¶ 1, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 254 (2002), Harold C. Wegner

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The April 2, 2002, Federal Circuit opinion in Enzo Biochem, Inc. v. Gen-Probe Inc., may have the greatest potential impact on a multidimensional basis of any decision from that court in recent years. Far more important than whatever disruption takes place domestically—which may be fixed through Congressional or further judicial action—one must look to the foreign impact of the Enzo opinion. This decision threatens to undermine the patent basis for American protection of biotechnology inventions abroad, once the case is understood and embodied in the several foreign patent laws. Problems with Enzo are not limited to biotechnology. What’s good for …

The Nexus Requirement And The Fatal Injury: Does An Offer To Sell An Infringing Product Give Rise To A Duty To Defend Under A Cgl?, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 344 (2002), Willard L. Hemsworth Iii Jan 2002

The Nexus Requirement And The Fatal Injury: Does An Offer To Sell An Infringing Product Give Rise To A Duty To Defend Under A Cgl?, 1 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 344 (2002), Willard L. Hemsworth Iii

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Case law in the area of patent infringement has held that patent infringement cannot occur in the course of an insured's advertising activities as a matter of law. In 1996, the United States added “offer to sell” as one of the enumerated offenses of direct patent infringement to 35 U.S.C. §271(a). Since that time, there has been little deviation or fluctuation from the above mentioned principle, especially in litigation where a patentee’s search for insurance coverage from their CGL policies “Adverting Injury” provision. This Comment discusses the necessity of the court system to reexamine the modification to 35 U.S.C. §271(a), …

Stem Cells, Cloning, And Abortion: Making Careful Distinctions, Dena S. Davis Jan 2002

Stem Cells, Cloning, And Abortion: Making Careful Distinctions, Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The current controversy over federal funding for research involving stem cells derived from very early embryos is situated between two other equally difficult issues: abortion and cloning. As Laurie Zoloth (2002) says, talk about stem cells is "directly proximate" to the abortion debate. Nonetheless, a settled position in favor of abortion rights does not necessarily lead to support for research that involves the death of embryos. Nor should opposition to reproductive cloning necessarily entail opposition to therapeutic cloning. There are important ways in which our attitudes toward research with embryonic stem cells ought to be entwined with our thinking about …

The European Union: An Appropriate Model For A Precautionary Approach?, Linda O'Neil Coleman Jan 2002

The European Union: An Appropriate Model For A Precautionary Approach?, Linda O'Neil Coleman

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment will argue that the current use and application of the precautionary principle should not be abandoned. However, before adopting the principle as a rule of international law, the international community should look to the European Union as a starting point for how to uniformly define and apply the precautionary principle. Accordingly, Part II of this Comment will examine the various formulations of the precautionary principle and the widespread adoption of a precautionary approach in a number of international instruments. Part III will describe the European Union's use of the principle and its attempt to balance environmental and public …

Functional Group Interactions Of A 5-Ht3r Antagonist, Padmavati Venkataraman, Prasad Joshi, Srinivasan P. Venkatachalan, Mani Mathalagi, Harish S. Parihar, Karen S. Kirschbaum, Marvin K. Schulte

PCOM Scholarly Works

Background: Lerisetron, a competitive serotonin type 3 receptor (5-HT 3R) antagonist, contains five functional groups capable of interacting with amino acids in the 5-HT3R binding site. Site directed mutagenesis studies of the 5-HT3AR have revealed several amino acids that are thought to form part of the binding domain of this receptor. The specific functional groups on the ligand that interact with these amino acids are, however, unknown. Using synthetic analogs of lerisetron as molecular probes in combination with site directed mutagenesis, we have identified some of these interactions and have proposed a model of the lerisetron binding site. Results: Two …

Diabetic Patients Foot Care Using Smart Materials To Prevent Ulcerations/Amputations, Carrie Hahn, Ajay Mahajan, Marco P. Schoen Jan 2002

Diabetic Patients Foot Care Using Smart Materials To Prevent Ulcerations/Amputations, Carrie Hahn, Ajay Mahajan, Marco P. Schoen

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A major cause of illness and disability in diabetic patients is complications affecting the lower limbs, particularly the feet where loss of feeling may result in ulcerations, and ultimately to partial or total amputation. Traditional remedies for this problem still remains in measuring the foot pressures and then designing a passive shoe insert that absorbs the high pressures. This process may then be repeated multiple times during the lifetime of the patient. This paper describes the conceptual design of an automatic system that monitors and controls the pressure levels in diabetic patients’ feet in real time. The scheme is based …

Competition And Complementarity In Local Economic Development: A Nonlinear Dynamic Approach, Richard Healy, Randall Jackson Jan 2002

Competition And Complementarity In Local Economic Development: A Nonlinear Dynamic Approach, Richard Healy, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Competition for local economic development has increased dramatically in the past 20 years. This competition is in many cases extremely costly to states and communities, while the benefits are uncertain. If regions whose economic fortunes are complementary could work with instead of against one another, costs of competition could be eliminated, while returns to economic development investments could be enhanced. This paper presents a method by which the underlying spatial economic relationships among areas within a region can be identified. Economic development policy can then be guided by the identification of the competitive or complementary links that exist among areas. …

A Spatial Logit Association Model For Cluster Detection, Ge Lin Jan 2002

A Spatial Logit Association Model For Cluster Detection, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this paper, I propose a logit spatial association model for binary spatial events and develop a scan algorithm to search for spatial associations. I extend the traditional logit model with spatial autocorrelated component so that the model includes not only known risk factors, but also spatially autocorrelated regions as a control or explanatory factor. The case study of West Virginia Lung Cancer shows that the model effectively captures cool and hot spots in lung cancer mortality.

The Depth Of Porphyrin In A Membrane And The Membrane's Physical Properties Affect The Photosensitizing Efficiency, Adina Lavi, Hana Weitman, Robert T. Holmes, Kevin M. Smith, Benjamin Ehrenberg Jan 2002

The Depth Of Porphyrin In A Membrane And The Membrane's Physical Properties Affect The Photosensitizing Efficiency, Adina Lavi, Hana Weitman, Robert T. Holmes, Kevin M. Smith, Benjamin Ehrenberg

Faculty Publications

Photosensitized biological processes, as applied in photodynamic therapy, are based on light-triggered generation of molecular singlet oxygen by a membrane-residing sensitizer. Most of the sensitizers currently used are hydrophobic or amphiphilic porphyrins and their analogs. The possible activity of the short-lived singlet oxygen is limited to the time it is diffusing in the membrane, before it emerges into the aqueous environment. In this paper we demonstrate the enhancement of the photosensitization process that is obtained by newly synthesized protoporphyrin derivatives, which insert their tetrapyrrole chromophore deeper into the lipid bilayer of liposomes. The insertion was measured by fluorescence quenching by …

Ethnic-Difference Markers For Use In Mapping By Admixture Linkage Disequilibrium, Heather E. Collins-Schramm, Carolyn M. Phillips, Darwin J. Operario, Jane S. Lee, James L. Weber, Robert L. Hanson, William C. Knowler, Richard Cooper, Hongzhe Li, Michael F. Seldin Jan 2002

Ethnic-Difference Markers For Use In Mapping By Admixture Linkage Disequilibrium, Heather E. Collins-Schramm, Carolyn M. Phillips, Darwin J. Operario, Jane S. Lee, James L. Weber, Robert L. Hanson, William C. Knowler, Richard Cooper, Hongzhe Li, Michael F. Seldin

Faculty Publications

Mapping by admixture linkage disequilibrium (MALD) is a potentially powerful technique for the mapping of complex genetic diseases. The practical requirements of this method include (a) a set of markers spanning the genome that have large allele-frequency differences between the parental ethnicities contributing to the admixed population and (b) an understanding of the extent of admixture in the study population. To this end, a DNA-pooling technique was used to screen microsatellite and diallelic insertion/deletion markers for allele-frequency differences between putative representatives of the parental populations of the admixed Mexican American (MA) and African American (AA) populations. Markers with promising pooled …

A Genome-Wide Scan For Obesity In African-Americans, Xiaofeng Zhu, Richard S. Cooper, Amy Luke, Guanjie Chen, Xiaodong Wu, Donghui Kan, Aravinda Chakravarti, Alan Weder

Faculty Publications

A genome-wide scan using 387 short tandem repeat markers was conducted for obesity among 618 black individuals from 202 families residing in a suburb of Chicago. Evidence for linkage was evaluated with BMI and percent body fat (PBF) using a variance component analysis approach. Suggestive evidence for linkage was found for BMI on chromosome 5 (logarithm of odds [LOD] score = 1.9) and PBF on chromosome 6 (LOD score = 2.7). One additional region on chromosome 3 was linked to these phenotypes at a lower level of significance (LOD score = 1.8 and 0.95 for BMI and PBF, respectively); the …

Effect Of Sweeteners On The Microstructure Of Yogurt, Zahur Z. Haque, Kayanush J. Aryana Jan 2002

Effect Of Sweeteners On The Microstructure Of Yogurt, Zahur Z. Haque, Kayanush J. Aryana

Faculty Publications

The objective was to determine the effect of a peptide sweetener, Aspartame, compared to a carbohydrate sweetener, sucrose, on the microstructure of yogurt. Microstructure was determined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Without the sweeteners, casein micelles, that make up the yogurt matrix, were observed in single longitudinal polymers. When Aspartame was used, casein micelles formed double longitudinal polymers. In comparison sugar caused casein micelles to form clusters. Data show that type of sweetener impacts state of association of casein micelles and thus effects microstructure.

Microstructure And Some Functional Properties Of Spray Dried Cheddar Whey Concentrated By Ultrafiltration Or Combination Of Ultrafiltration And Vacuum Evaporation, Kayanush J. Aryana, Zahur Z. Haque Jan 2002

Microstructure And Some Functional Properties Of Spray Dried Cheddar Whey Concentrated By Ultrafiltration Or Combination Of Ultrafiltration And Vacuum Evaporation, Kayanush J. Aryana, Zahur Z. Haque

Faculty Publications

In order to study the influence of the vacuum evaporation (VE) process on the functionality of whey protein concentrates (WPC's), Cheddar WPC's were produced with and without VE, viz. by i) ultrafiltration (UF) and spray drying (SD) (UFSD), and by ii) UF, VE and SD (UFVESD). Geling properties and interfacial microstructure around residual fat were studied by transmission electron microscopy. Both WPC's were hydrated with 0.1 M NaCl at pH 7.0 (10% protein w/v) and gels were made in glass tubes by heating for 15 min at 90°C. Electron dense membrane like structures were seen at the oil-water interface of …

Effect Of Copper, Iron, Zinc And Magnesium Ions On Bovine Serum Albumin Gelation, Zahur Z. Haque, Kayanush J. Aryana Jan 2002

Effect Of Copper, Iron, Zinc And Magnesium Ions On Bovine Serum Albumin Gelation, Zahur Z. Haque, Kayanush J. Aryana

Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to observe the effect of trace amounts of various ions CuSO4, FeSO4, ZnSO4 and MgSO4, on the microstructure of bovine serum albumin (BSA) gels. Microstructure was studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Protein dispersions (5% w/v) were made in 0.1 M NaCl containing 5 mM of each of the divalent cations. The pH was adjusted to pH 7 using 0.1 N NaOH. Addition of CuSO4 markedly changed the microstructure of BSA gels; significantly larger water entrapping void spaces were seen and the gel matrix comprised of larger aggregates. An opposite effect was seen for MgSO4 …
