Recent Advances In Biological Weapons Detection, Lore Patton-Fehrman Jan 2002

Recent Advances In Biological Weapons Detection, Lore Patton-Fehrman

Honors Capstones

The events at the end of2001 have made the threat from biological weapons a critical issue and a matter for public concern and safety. The detection and identification of a biological weapon with a portable device in a rapid and sensitive manner could mean the difference between a localized outbreak or an epidemic or even a pandemic. A review of recent technological articles was conducted for an overview of advances in the field of biological weapon detection. Three main branches of research were covered: methods detecting DNA/RNA, antibody based methods, and cell or tissue based methods. Most of the researched …

Reconstruction And Analysis Of Skeletal Remains From Wedron Mounds : A Late Woodland Site In Wedron, Il, Adam Kolatorowicz

Honors Capstones

An excavation of Wedron Mounds in Wedron, IL conducted in the 1972 revealed burial mounds containing highly fragmented and incomplete skeletal material from a Native American population dating back to the Late Woodland period. A cursory examination of the material during the original excavation tentatively identified what was found and the sex of the ten individuals. This study re-examines the material and identifies the age, sex, and stature of each of the individuals. Several metric and non-metric techniques, as developed by osteologists and forensic anthropologists, are used in the determination of the three unknowns. The data collected here can be …

Skin Cancer Screening Program And Analysis, Jerwana A. Laster Jan 2002

Skin Cancer Screening Program And Analysis, Jerwana A. Laster

Honors Capstones

Skin cancer is the most common and the most preventable form of cancer. Nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, while melanoma is associated with intense episodes of ultraviolet exposure resulting in sunburns. Numerous risk factors are associated with the development of skin cancer. These include exposure to ultraviolet radiation; phenotypic factors such as skin type, eye and hair color, tendency to bum and tan and having freckles and moles; a personal or family history of skin cancer; and occupational sun exposure. Primary prevention behaviors include applying SPF 15+ sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure, reapplying SPF …

The Great Debate : Evolution Vs. Creationism, Alan Wilson Jan 2002

The Great Debate : Evolution Vs. Creationism, Alan Wilson

Honors Capstones

Should we believe that life was created, or that it evolved over millions of years? Evolution is the fundamental principal of all biology, and although it has a wealth of information in its favot there are still many skeptics that fail to recognize its credibility. The purpose of my thesis is to present this evidence in a logical order, so that a creationist that doesn't believe evolution exists, may at least consider it as an explanation of the development of life on earth. I'm not attacking religion, just explaining alternative answers. By examining testimonies and arguments on both sides of …

Starting with a comprehensive assessment, the approach comprises a number of interconnected elements, which are …

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin Jan 2002

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin

Honors Capstones

As boys enter into the beginning years of adolescence, they begin a journey into a completely different world. The onset of puberty results in physical and cognitive changes that are often unexpected and challenging. As the biological changes begin, adolescents transition into middle school, with more expectations and responsibilities from the adults in their lives. Unfortunately for boys, there are no outlets for all the frustration, fear, embarrassment, anger, or other intense emotions caused by these transitions. The purpose of this essay is to suggest a new way to examine the aggression and violence of boys. I propose that boys …

Distributions And Geographical Relationships Of The Polygyrid Land Snails (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Polygyridae) Of Arkansas, Gerald E. Walsh, Brian F. Coles

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Arkansas distributions of land mollusks of the family Polygyridae are presented based on the results of a state-wide survey and a critical review of published and unpublished locality records. Six of the 45 species previously recorded for Arkansas are excluded because they were misidentified, do not have established populations in the state, or are found only as fossils. Four others are not mapped because of a lack of recent distributional data or because the specific status of a form is unclear. There is a predominant pattern of occurrence limited to the northern, northwestern, or western parts of the state. …

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith Jan 2002

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "This chapter has more than one goal. First, I want to introduce readers to the apparatus of practices, institutions and virtues (PIV) that helps us understand what virtues are. Second, I want to explore the notion of politics a little, to see what its main problem is. (I will claim, perhaps surprisingly, that business management is largely a variation of politics.) Third, I want to reintroduce civility and suggest that it is an important contributor to solving the political problem (and problems of management).

Throughout this chapter, I will emphasize process. As we shall see, process is integrated in …

Virtual Work And Leadership: The Role Of The Internet, Complexity, Creativity, And Knowledge Workers, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter presents the case for strong leadership to develop an internationally distributed virtual workforce. It is a speculative approach to how work and workers may behave in a future where most of their work and interactions will be virtual and disconnected from their physical location. The lessons that can be learned from the natural world are explored especially from complexity theories. Examples are provided of natural systems in action and the insights others have drawn from these theories and how this may inform decision-making, risk-taking and the management of virtual workers. The impact of the Internet on knowledge creation …

The Evolution Of Cell Colonies In Volvocacean Algae : Investigation By Theoretical Analysis And Computer Simulation., Frank Noe Jan 2002

The Evolution Of Cell Colonies In Volvocacean Algae : Investigation By Theoretical Analysis And Computer Simulation., Frank Noe

Theses

This thesis presents a mathematical analysis and computational simulation which is used to investigate the evolution of cell colonies. The evolutionary transition from unicellular to cell colony form is a prerequesite for multicellular life as it exists abundantly on earth. This transition has occured numerous times independently so that we expect a high selective advantage to be associated with it. The photosynthetic green algae order Volvocaceae is an appropriate set of model organisms for the study of the evolution of cell colonies since it comprises living unicellular organisms, cell colonies, and multicellular organisms of different shapes, sizes and levels of …

An Evaluation Of Foster Parents' Attitudes Towards Birth Parents, Deborah C. Browne Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Foster Parents' Attitudes Towards Birth Parents, Deborah C. Browne

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Although foster care involves many different relationships that have been examined for many years, few researchers have paid attention to the relationship that must inevitably develop between the foster parents and the child's birth parents. Foster parents have, nonetheless, been noted to express negative feelings about the behaviour of the foster child's natural family. This may have negative effects on the development of the child's self esteem and on the outcome of the entire placement. The current paper illustrates how the foster parents of 127 placements in Cork city described the birth parents of their foster children. Although 38% of …

A Quantitative Similarity Metric For Design-By-Analogy, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood Jan 2002

A Quantitative Similarity Metric For Design-By-Analogy, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

During the design and development of new products, design engineers use many techniques to generate and define new and "good" concepts. Inherent in this search for solutions is the conscious and unconscious reliance on prior experience and knowledge, or design-by-analogy. In this paper, a quantitative metric for design-by-analogy is developed. This metric is based on the functional similarity of products. By using this product-similarity metric, designers are able to formalize and quantify design-by-analogy techniques during concept and layout design. The methods, as developed in this paper, allow a designer with limited experience to develop sophisticated solutions that enhance the overall …

A Functional Basis For Engineering Design: Reconciling And Evolving Previous Efforts, Julie Hirtz, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, Simon Szykman, Kristin L. Wood Jan 2002

A Functional Basis For Engineering Design: Reconciling And Evolving Previous Efforts, Julie Hirtz, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, Simon Szykman, Kristin L. Wood

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In engineering design, all products and artifacts have some intended reason behind their existence: the product or artifact function. Functional modeling provides an abstract, yet direct, method for understanding and representing an overall product or artifact function. Functional modeling also strategically guides design activities such as problem decomposition, physical modeling, product architecting, concept generation, and team organization. A formal function representation is needed to support functional modeling, and a standardized set of function-related terminology leads to repeatable and meaningful results from such a representation. We refer to this representation as a functional basis; in this paper, we seek to reconcile …

A Community Of Courts: Toward A System Of International Criminal Law Enforcement, William W. Burke-White Jan 2002

A Community Of Courts: Toward A System Of International Criminal Law Enforcement, William W. Burke-White

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article argues that, for political reasons, the future of international criminal law enforcement will largely be at the domestic level. It anticipates the emergence of a community of courts-domestic, semi-internationalized, and supranational. A decentralized system of international criminal law enforcement may give pause for concern: How can such a system be regulated? How can uniformity and effectiveness be assured? It is the claim of this Article that, in a world in which information is power, the relationships between these courts-the exchange of information, ideas, and personnel-brings order and regularity to the system. These interdependent relationships are defined by the …
