Book Review - The Guide To Iowa's State Preserves, Cornelia F. Mutel Jan 2002

Book Review - The Guide To Iowa's State Preserves, Cornelia F. Mutel

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Iowa State Preserves System gives the highest protection afforded by law to sites "dedicated for maintenance as nearly as possible in [their] natural condition." To date, ninety sites have been dedicated as biological, geological, archaeological, scenic, or historic preserves, declaring that such use is the site's "highest, best, and most important use for the public benefit" (State Preserves Act of 1965). In a state as dramatically altered as Iowa, such remnants are of intense interest to professional and amateur naturalists of all inclinations, as well as to anyone who appreciates nature. Yet understanding the basic qualities of these preserve …

Codeswitching In Antonio Muñoz Molina’S Carlota Fainberg: Determiner Gender And Noun Phrase Status, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Codeswitching between determiner and noun in which the language of …

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii Jan 2002

Insurance, Terrorism, And 9/11: Reflections On Three Threshold Questions, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Faculty Publications

For most of us, the collapse of the World Trade Center towers exists at the outermost edge of human comprehension. Even after one visits Ground Zero, the events of 9/11 retain a surreal quality, invoking feelings beyond words as one tries to contemplate losses immeasurable with numbers. Indeed, the insurance losses are insignificant when compared to the human tragedies caused by the terrorist attacks-and in insurance terms, we witnessed the most costly, complex events to transpire in a single day in the history of the planet. Many years will pass before all the insurance ramifications of 9/11 are sorted out.

An Approach For The Correlation Of Emg Signals And The Rectification Of Ptb Sockets, Noor Azuan Abu Osman, S.S. Wong, Z. Omar

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Prosthesis is often used to restore the appearance and functional mobility to individuals following limb amputatio n. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between the electromyogram (EMG) signals with the rectication of patellar tendon bearing (PTB) socket. Six PTB sockets are manufactured with di erent compression depths at the patellar tendon region. Experiments for the subject are carried out to obtain the EMG signals using EMG telemetry system. From this study, it is found that there exists some kinds of pattern as the depths of PTB rectication is changed. As the PTB rectication depth is increased, …

Comparative Analysis Of Regenerants Between Single And Naked Meristem (Scalps) Of Musa Acuminata Var. Berangan, N.A. Juli, Norzulaani Khalid

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The regeneration capacity of banana meristem in vitro was compared between single meristem and scalp methods. Scalps were induced on p4 media containing MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) components supplemented with coconut water and high concentration of benzyl amino purine (BAP) (75μM). The number of regenerated shoots produced from scalps was six-fold higher than that generated from single meristems. A comparison of the growth response upon gibberelic acid (GA3) treatment was made between plantlets derived from both methods to detect dwarf off-types. The difference in height and the number of leaves between plantlets from both sources was statistically insignificant. On …

Developing An Intelligent User Manager System For Controlling Smart School Network Resources, Abdullah Gani, H. Mouratidis, N.S. Abouzakhar, G.A. Manson

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper presents an Intelligent User Manager System (UMAS) for controlling access to network resources in a Smart School network. Network resources, especially in a Smart School, are in short supply and relatively expensive to acquire, therefore a control mechanism should be in place so that available resources can be allocated for legitimate usages only. An intelligent mechanism using Fuzzy Logic is deployed for the purpose of knowledge learning in order to process all the user requests accordingly. A decision of granting a network resource request needs to be based on several data sets that represent the current network state, …

Mutation Analysis Of The Brca1 Gene In Malaysian Breast Cancer Patients, P. Balraj, A.S.B. Khoo, L. Volpi, J.A.M.A. Tan, S. Nair, H. Abdullah

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Thirty patients with early onset breast cancer or familial breast cancer from Malaysia were analysed for germline mutation in the early onset breast cancer I gene (BRCA1). Direct sequencing of the entire coding region of BRCA1 identified a frameshift mutation, c.5447-5448insC (insC5447) (codon 1776 of exon 21) in a patient aged 32 of the Malay ethnic origin, who had no family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer. Eight polymorphisms (2201C > T, 2430T > C, P871L, E1038G, K1183R, 4427T > C, S1613G and IVS8-57delT) were identified in the samples tested.

Nosocomial Outbreak Of Enterobacter Gergoviae Bacteremia In A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, R. Ganeswire, Kwai Lin Thong, S.D. Puthucheary Jan 2002

Nosocomial Outbreak Of Enterobacter Gergoviae Bacteremia In A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, R. Ganeswire, Kwai Lin Thong, S.D. Puthucheary

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A nosocomial outbreak of bacteremia, caused by Enterobacter gergoviae infected 11 babies, nine of whom were premature, were investigated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), of a general hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The strain that was isolated from the babies was also isolated from the dextrose saline used for the dilution of parenteral antibiotics and from the hands of a healthcare worker on duty in the nursery. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA confirmed a possible cross-contamination of parenteral dextrose saline and the healthcare worker. Prompt and effective control measures were initiated within NICU and the …

Pcr-Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (Sscp) Analysis Of Salmonella Typhi And Other Salmonella Serovars, S. Nair, Kwai Lin Thong, T. Pang, M. Altwegg Jan 2002

Pcr-Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (Sscp) Analysis Of Salmonella Typhi And Other Salmonella Serovars, S. Nair, Kwai Lin Thong, T. Pang, M. Altwegg

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and PCR¨Csingle-strand conformation polymorphism(PCR-SSCP) analyses were carried out on the 1.6-kb groEL gene from 41 strains of 10 different Salmonella serovars. Three HaeIII RFLP profiles were recognized, but no discrimination between the serovars could be achieved by this technique. However, PCR-SSCP analysis of the groEL genes of various Salmonella serovars produced 14 SSCP profiles, indicating the potential of this technique to differentiate different Salmonella serovars (interserovar differentiation). Moreover, PCR-SSCP could differentiate strains within a subset of serovars (intraserovar discrimination), as three SSCP profiles were produced for the 11 Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis strains, and two …
