An Evaluation Of Long-Term Preservation Methods For Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos) Faecal Dna Samples, Melanie A. Murphy, Lisette P. Waits, Katherine C. Kendall, Samuel K. Wasser, Jerry A. Higbee, Robert Bogden
United States National Park Service: Publications
Relatively few large-scale faecal DNA studies have been initiated due to difficulties in amplifying low quality and quantity DNA template. To improve brown bear faecal DNA PCR amplification success rates and to determine post collection sample longevity, five preservation methods were evaluated: 90% ethanol, DETs buffer, silica-dried, oven-dried stored at room temperature, and oven-dried stored at –20 ◦C. Preservation effectiveness was evaluated for 50 faecal samples by PCR amplification of a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) locus (∼146 bp) and a nuclear DNA (nDNA) locus (∼200 bp) at time points of one week, one month, three months and six months. Preservation …

Bioinformatics is a new and rapidly evolving discipline that has emerged from the fields of experimental molecular biology and biochemistry, and from the the artificial intelligence, database, and algorithms disciplines of computer science. Largely because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics research, academia has been slow to respond to strong industry and government demands for trained scientists to develop and apply novel bioinformatics techniques to the rapidly-growing, freely-available repositories of genetic and proteomic data. While some institutions are responding to this demand by establishing graduate programs in bioinformatics, the entrance barriers for these programs are high, largely due to …
Identifying Accommodations For Inclusion Settings: A Strategy For Special And General Educators, Karen A. Verbeke Ph.D.
Identifying Accommodations For Inclusion Settings: A Strategy For Special And General Educators, Karen A. Verbeke Ph.D.
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Identifying accommodations for students with disabilities is an important part of the collaboration that must take place between special and general educators as a result of the regulations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 1997). The law has placed more emphasis on having students with disabilities receive the majority of their instruction in “regular” classes with the use of supplementary aids and services. Identifying these accommodations can be a daunting task for new as well as veteran teachers because there are so many possible accommodations. One strategy, PRESS, has been effective in the training of new teachers and …

Assessment And Recommendations For Bull Toad’S Pond At Green Island Common, Tracy Degnan
Assessment And Recommendations For Bull Toad’S Pond At Green Island Common, Tracy Degnan
PREP Reports & Publications
The purpose of this project was to inventory and evaluate Bull Toad’s Pond, located at the Great Island Common in New Castle. In this report the phrase 'Bull Toad’s Pond' is intended to include the pond and the shallow water wetland system that surrounds the pond. The original scope of this project was directed at a detailed analysis and review of existing available data, field determinations, and an analysis of the current conditions of Bull Toad’s Pond. In addition, the purpose of this project was to offer recommendations of alternative solutions for restoring the functions and values of this degraded …

Hibal: A Hydrologic-Isotopic-Balance Model For Application To Paleolake Systems, Larry Benson, Fred Paillet
Hibal: A Hydrologic-Isotopic-Balance Model For Application To Paleolake Systems, Larry Benson, Fred Paillet
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A simple hydrologic-isotopic-balance (HIBAL) model for application to paleolake δ18O records is presented. Inputs to the model include discharge, on-lake precipitation, evaporation, and the δ18O values of these fluid fluxes. Monthly values of climatic parameters that govern the fractionation of 18O and 16O during evaporation have been extracted from historical data sets and held constant in the model. The ability of the model to simulate changes in the hydrologic balance and the δ18O evolution of the mixed layer has been demonstrated using measured data from Pyramid Lake, Nevada. Simulations of the response …
Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ
Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Wildlife-related values in American society are undergoing considerable change. Within the last few decades, non-consumptive recreational use of wildlife has increased dramatically; groups that subscribe to animal protection values (ranging from animal welfare to animal rights to animal liberation) are exercising increasing influence over wildlife policy, and the ranks of people who practice wildlife rehabilitation have grown significantly. In this time of questioning and change, it should not be surprising that the attitudes and values of conservation professionals are in transition as well. Within many agencies and academic institutions, the traditional focus on game management (Geist et al. 2001) is …

Animal Dissection And Evidence-Based Life-Science And Health-Professions Education, Nathan Nobis
Animal Dissection And Evidence-Based Life-Science And Health-Professions Education, Nathan Nobis
Education Collection
Balcombe’s (2000, 2001) case for replacing learning methods that require pain, suffering, and death for animals with methods that do not (computer-assisted learning, three-dimensional models, videotapes, and other alternatives) can be seen as motivated by this evidentialist perspective. Balcombe provided a wealth of empirical evidence from educational studies to show that in most contexts animal dissection is not necessary—and even counterproductive—to achieve valid educational goals, especially higher order goals (concept learning and problem solving). He demonstrated that no sound defense of dissection has been given.
A Priestly View Of Bible Arithmetic: Deity's Regulative Aesthetic Activity Within Davidic Musicology, Ernest G. Mcclain
A Priestly View Of Bible Arithmetic: Deity's Regulative Aesthetic Activity Within Davidic Musicology, Ernest G. Mcclain
Research Resources
Reading arithmetic proportion in the bible via musical hermeneutics, this essay emphasizes the important role of music in predominantly aural cultures. Applying Patrick Heelan's non-distributive lattice logic to examples extracted from the bible, McClain applies the notion of regulative aesthetic activity to the Davidic musicology embedded in Bible mathology. Includes several illustrative diagrams.
Social Networks And Hiv Transmission: The Contextual Dynamics Of Hiv Risk Behaviors, Karen L. Robinson
Social Networks And Hiv Transmission: The Contextual Dynamics Of Hiv Risk Behaviors, Karen L. Robinson
International Journal of Global Health
Despite advances in public health, biomedical, and social sciences, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), continues to proliferate. HIV is spread by exposure to infected blood, semen, or vaginal secretions. HIV transmission most commonly occurs because of sexual activities, through the sharing of contaminated needles and other drug paraphernalia, and less frequently, from infected mothers to their newborns (CDC, 2001). From the first reported in case in June 1981 through June 2001, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 793,026 cases of AIDS. The CDC estimates that 650,000 to 900,000 Americans …
