An Approach To Sequence Dna Without Tagging, Sanjun Niu, Ravi F. Saraf Jan 2002

An Approach To Sequence Dna Without Tagging, Sanjun Niu, Ravi F. Saraf

Ravi Saraf Publications

Microarray technology is playing an increasingly important role in biology and medicine and its application to genomics for gene expression analysis has already reached the market with a variety of commercially available instruments. In these combinatorial analysis methods, known probe single-strand DNA (ssDNA) “primers” are attached in clusters of typically 100 μm × 100 μm pixels. Each pixel of the array has a slightly different sequence. On exposure to “unknown” target ssDNA, the pixels with the right complementary probe ssDNA sequence convert to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) by a hybridization reaction. To transduct the conversion of the pixel to dsDNA, the …

Molecular Evidence For A Species Complex In The Genus Aphelinus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), With Additional Data On Aphidiine Phylogeny (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Yi Chen, Kristopher L Giles, Matthew H. Greenstone

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Mitochondrial 16srDNAwas sequenced from nine different populations of Aphelinidae and 10 of aphidiinae. Sequence divergences between populations within a species are low, ranging from 0 to 0.38%. Divergences among species within the same genus range from 0 to 8.71%. Aphelinus asychis Walker has a sequence divergence from the other Aphelinus spp. of 8.71%, which is even higher than the divergences among the aphidiine genera Lysiphlebus, Aphidius and Diaeretiella. Our 16s rDNA phylogeny for aphidiines is concordant with a previously published NADH1 dehydrogenase phylogeny. Our analysis identiÞes a complex comprising A. albipodus (Hayat & Fatima), A. varipes (Foerster), and A. …

Presentations and other scholarship

Artificial Immune System (AIS) is a novel evolutionary paradigm inspired by the biological aspects of the immune system. The human immune system has motivated scientists and engineers for finding powerful information processing algorithms that has solved complex engineering tasks. This paper discusses two concepts. (a) The behavioral management of artificial intelligence (AI) namely the intelligent multi agent systems, (b) The evolutionary computation called the artificial immune system that imitates the biological theory called the immune system. The outcome of this research is an Artificial Immune System based Intelligent Multi Agent Model named AISIMAM that solves agent-based applications. The model is …

Patents On Dna Sequences: Molecules And Information, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Book Chapters

As public and private sector initiatives raced to complete the sequence of the human genome, patent issues played a prominent role in speculations about the significance of this achievement. How much of the genome would be subject to the control of patent holders, and what would this mean for future research and the development of products for the improvement of human health in a patent system developed to establish rights in mechanical inventions of an earlier era up to the task of resolving competing claim, to the genome on behalf or the many sequential innovators who elucidate its sequence and …

Insurance Implications Of September 11 And Possible Responses, Jeffrey E. Thomas Jan 2002

Insurance Implications Of September 11 And Possible Responses, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

September 11 was a "defining moment" for this generation. The graphic images of that day will forever remain seared into people's individual and collective consciousness. Americans responded in many ways, both individually and collectively. The government, with nearly unanimous public support, immediately responded by declaring "war" on terrorism and by adopting measures to provide relief for victims of the attack.

September 11 was also a defining moment for the insurance industry. It was "the largest single insured event in history." Insurance companies are expected to pay some $50 billion to victims of the attack -more than eight times what the …

The Influence Of Stand Density On Rate Of Carbon Sequestration In Loblolly Pine Plantations On Mined Lands In East Texas, Jason Morton Jan 2002

The Influence Of Stand Density On Rate Of Carbon Sequestration In Loblolly Pine Plantations On Mined Lands In East Texas, Jason Morton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The State of Texas emits more carbon dioxide (C02) into the atmosphere than any other state in the United States. With environmental concerns escalating, the U.S. may be forced to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases. The first target of these reductions will likely be utility companies that utilize coalfired power plants. In order to mitigate CO2 emissions, utility companies may want to either purchase carbon credits which can be obtained through carbon sequestration on NIPF lands or manage reclaimed mined lands for maximum carbon sequestration. This study determined the financially optimal planting density and management regimes for loblolly pine …

Effects Of Field Size And Landscape Composition On Grassland Birds In South-Central Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Rolf R. Koford, Malinda L. Braland Jan 2002

Effects Of Field Size And Landscape Composition On Grassland Birds In South-Central Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Rolf R. Koford, Malinda L. Braland

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Many species of grassland birds have been shown to avoid smaller fields. The avoidance of smaller fields, however, has not been consistently reported; avoidance may occur in one study, but not in another. To examine one possible reason for these inconsistencies, we examined how landscape composition influenced the relations between occurrence or abundance and field size. The study took place during the 1998 breeding season on 44 Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields located in Adair, Ringgold, and Union counties. The relations between occurrence, abundance, and field size were not influenced by landscape composition for any species.

Factors Influencing The Occurrence Of Birds That Use Feeders In Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Steve E. Fairbairn, Richard J. Hollis

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since its inception in 1984, data from the annual Iowa "Winter Bird Feeder Survey" have provided valuable information about birds that use feeders in Iowa such as spatial and temporal population trends. Using data from the 1988 and 1994 Surveys, we examined how the occurrence of bird species that use feeders was influenced by geographic location, the habitat surrounding a house, and the types of seeds offered at a house. Of the 23 species examined, the occurrence of 8 species was influenced by latitude, 22 species were influenced by the habitat surrounding the house, and 22 species were influenced by …

Identification And Distribution Of Masked And Hayden's Shrews (Genus Sorex) In Iowa, Howard P. Whidden, Alison W. Ray, John B. Bowles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Masked shrews (Sorex cinereus) and Hayden's shrews (S. haydeni) are both reported from Iowa, but the two species are difficult to tell apart and their relative distributions in Iowa have been unclear. We took 13 skull measurements and examined 2 qualitative features on more than 300 specimens of Sorex from Iowa. The vast majority of our specimens could be identified easily by cranial measurements, and more than half could be identified by the relative position of the maxillary plate. We found no evidence for intergradation between the two species. Masked shrews are present throughout most of Iowa, whereas Hayden's shrews …

The Unionid Mussels Of The Upper Iowa And Turkey River Watersheds, Jim Eckblad, Brett Ostby, Karis Tenneson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Iowa driftless region occupies an area of about 9,000 km2 in the northeastern corner of Iowa and is drained by relatively old entrenched meandering streams. The Upper Iowa River and Turkey River are the largest of these streams. During the period from June, 1999 to October, 2000, a total of 193 sites were surveyed for mussels from the Upper Iowa River, the Turkey River, and their main tributaries. Surveys were conducted by hand using a 10 m bank-to-bank search at each site. Data analysis was facilitated using ArcView GIS. The presence of mussels was recorded at 75% of …

Failure Analysis Research Summary: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Julie K. Chard, Giridhar Akula, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2002

Failure Analysis Research Summary: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Julie K. Chard, Giridhar Akula, Bruce Bugbee

NASA

Power loss is a common failure in controlled environments. The duration of power loss can be several days – and even weeks – in space environments. Long-duration power loss and the resulting darkness can cause plants to die unless remedial measures are taken during the power outage. Emergency back-up power from batteries could provide low light and reduced air temperature. Plant metabolism and growth are reduced in low temperature. As metabolism slows, energy requirements are reduced and less light is needed. The temperature should be maintained above the chilling temperature for the plant, which is species dependent. The addition of …

A Methodology For Streamlining Historical Research: The Analysis Of Technical And Scientific Publications, John T. Battalio

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article provides a framework for organizing and structuring the research of historical researchers who analyze technical and scientific publications. Because historical research spans both decades and centuries, an effective research methodology is essential. The framework consists of a multifaceted 10-step method for studying the written discourse of scientific and technical communication, specifically for interpreting historical data obtained from articles published in technical and scientific journals. The method is a reliable means for making sense of the enormous body of data that awaits historical researchers in the volumes of scientific and technical discourse already published.

Variation In Overstory Nitrogen Uptake In A Small, High-Elevation Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Watershed, M. Barker, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas, I. F. Creed

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

High-elevation red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) forests of the southern Appalachians exhibit considerable spatial heterogeneity in structure, and possibly in N uptake, because of a combination of natural disturbances and heavy fir mortality caused by infestations of the exotic balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratz). The objectives of this study are to determine spatial variability in tree N uptake in a small high-elevation catchment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, compare outcomes among calculation methods, and assess the influence of stand and landscape properties on N uptake. Tree N uptake is estimated …

Toward A Cautious Approach To Obeisance: The Role Of Scholarship In Patent Law Jurisprudence, Craig Allen Nard Jan 2002

Toward A Cautious Approach To Obeisance: The Role Of Scholarship In Patent Law Jurisprudence, Craig Allen Nard

Faculty Publications

This article explores the role of secondary authority in patent law jurisprudence. I reviewed every Federal Circuit published opinion from 1982 (the year of the court's creation) to 2000. I discuss the results of my empirical research and explore why scholarship has a place in the Federal Circuit's patent law jurisprudence. I ultimately urge the court to be cautiously more receptive to secondary authority when deciding patent cases.

literature that address the essence of transpersonal psychology. A thematic analysis of

these passages revealed that the two most frequent categories, occurring 53 (66.2%) and 49

(61.2%) times respectively, were: (a) Going beyond or transcending the individual, ego, self,

the personal, personality, or personal identity; existence of a deeper, true, or authentic Self;

and (b) Spirituality, psychospiritual, psychospiritual development, the spiritual, spirit. Other,

less frequent, themes included: special states of consciousness; interconnectivity/unity; going

beyond other schools of psychology; emphasis on a scientific approach; mysticism; full range

of consciousness; greater …

Dinomor: Evoking Memories Of Dino's Dreams And Death, Tonu R. Soidla Jan 2002

Dinomor: Evoking Memories Of Dino's Dreams And Death, Tonu R. Soidla

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This is a transpersonal fantasy about the last days of the dinosaurs ca. sixty-five million years ago. I suppose that communication with the Timeless (or if one prefers to put it--with Another) in one's mind precedes intraspecies communication and that one of the first recognizable acts of mystical life is surrender. A more specific and of course more far-out and irreverent hypothesis underlying this fantasy is that--unlike the bulk of individual memory records--Timeless memory "seeds" of unspecified origin are transmittable by a [retro]enterovirus. This leads to the possibility of horizontal transmission of this type of memory. In the new host, …

A Baseline Assessment Of Furbearers On The Upper Coastal Plain Of Virginia, A. Scott Bellows, Joseph C. Mitchell

Virginia Journal of Science

We assessed the status of furbearing mammals on Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia during the 1998-1999 trapping season with the cooperation of local licensed trappers. Our analyses were based on 345 captures representing of 10 mammal species, ranging from one bobcat (Lynx rufus) to 157 beavers (Castor canadensis). Mean number of captures per 100 trap nights was 17.0. Captures varied from 11.9 to 17.9 per 100 trap nights for conibear traps and 9.7 to 18.3 per 100 trap nights for leg-hold traps. External measurements of six species were similar to those reported for other populations …

The Hiv Protease Inhibitor Saquinavir Impairs Lipid Metabolism And Glucose Transport In Cultured Adipocytes, S. Ranganathan, Philip A. Kern Jan 2002

The Hiv Protease Inhibitor Saquinavir Impairs Lipid Metabolism And Glucose Transport In Cultured Adipocytes, S. Ranganathan, Philip A. Kern

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Treatment of HIV infection using protease inhibitors is frequently associated with lipodystrophy and impaired lipid and glucose metabolism. We examined the effect of saquinavir, one of the protease inhibitors, on lipid metabolism and glucose transport in cultured adipocytes. Saquinavir inhibited lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in 3T3-F442A and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The inhibition of LPL was 81% at a concentration of 20 μg/ml. Another closely related drug, indinavir, had a small inhibitory effect. Saquinavir also inhibited the biosynthesis of lipids from [14C]-acetate. Saquinavir increased the lipolysis. Saquinavir had no significant effect on the cellular protein synthesis or protein content. Saquinavir …
