Stomatal Responses Of Douglas-Fir Seedlings To Elevated Carbon Dioxide And Temperature During The Third And Fourth Years Of Exposure, James D. Lewis, Melissa S. Lucash, David M. Olszyk, David T. Tingey

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two major components of climate change, increasing atmospheric [CO2] and increasing temperature, may substantially alter the effects of water availability to plants through effects on the rate of water loss from leaves. We examined the interactive effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on seasonal patterns of stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E) and instantaneous transpiration efficiency (ITE) in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings. Seedlings were grown in sunlit chambers at either ambient CO2 (AC) or ambient + 180 µmol mol-1 CO2 (EC), and at ambient temperature (AT) or ambient + 3.5° …

Reconnaissance Of Pharmaceutical Chemicals In Urban Streams Of The Tualatin River Basin, Oregon, 2002, Stewart A. Rounds, Micelis C. Doyle, Patrick M. Edwards, Edward T. Furlong

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

A reconnaissance of pharmaceutical chemicals in urban streams of the Tualatin River basin was conducted in July 2002 in an effort to better understand the occurrence and distribution of such compounds, and to determine whether they might be useful indicators of human-related stream contamination. Of the 21 pharmaceutical chemicals and metabolites tested, only 6 (acetaminophen, caffeine, carbamazepine, codeine, cotinine, and sulfamethoxazole) were detected in filtered stream samples from 10 sites. The concentrations of most of the detected compounds were relatively low (less than 0.05 microgram per liter). The most frequently detected compounds were cotinine (a nicotine metabolite, 8 of 10 …

Does Ascorbic Acid Protect Against Vanadium Neurotoxicity In Different Regions Of Rat Brain?, Fatum A. El-Shaari, Syed S. Haider, Mustafa M. El-Fakhri, Kilani M. Ghawarsha

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: Ascorbic acid is a powerful antioxidant and protects against lipid peroxidation in cerebral membrane. The objective of the study was to investigate protective effects of ascorbic acid on lipid peroxidative damage and perturbation of enzymes, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in discrete regions of rat brain after vanadium exposure. METHODS: This study was carried out at Al-Arab Medical University, Benghazi, Libya, from 1995 to 1996. To investigate the effect of this vitamin on vanadium neurotoxicity in brain, adult rats were injected with L-ascorbic acid (1.0 g/kg body weight) and elemental vanadium (2.5 mg/kg body weight) alone or concomitantly …

Manic Depression : An Overview, Cassandra Lyn Rivers

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Many people have heard of manic depression or bipolar disorder, but in reality they probably are unfamiliar with what it actually is. Manic depression is a mood disorder which can come in many different forms. Most who are familiar with manic depression are so because they know someone with this dreadful illness. This paper will attempt to answer and clarify many of the questions that individuals have about manic depression. These topics include the history, the causes, and the treatments that are available. It is hoped that this paper will serve as a guide for people who do not fully …

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper Jan 2002

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The years 1933-1945 were filled with great turmoil and inconsistency throughout Germany. As early as 1933, laws were enacted and passed that set in motion the sequence of events that would lead to World War II and the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler's rise to power in a country torn by inner conflict subsequently gave authority to those who adhered to the principles of eugenics, euthanasia, sterilizations, and other methods of"population control." By the late 1930s, the goal of public support of establishing a "master race" was widely accepted and lauded in Germany. While Hitler's influence and power was considerable, his master …

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder Jan 2002

Behavioral And Other Human Ecologies: Critique, Response And Progress Through Criticism, Bruce Winterhalder

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper has three goals: (1) to define the anthropological subfield of human behavioral ecology (HBE) and characterize recent progress in this research tradition; (2) to address Joseph's (2000) critique of HBE from the perspective of an advocate of that field; and (3) to suggest features that make for effective criticism of research traditions. (1) HBE attempts to understand intra- and inter-societal diversity in human behavior as the product of species-wide adaptive goals which must be realized in highly diverse, socio-environmental circumstances. Theoretically, HBE draws selectively from neo-Darwinism and its cultural-evolutionary analogs, from micro-economics, and from elements of formal decision …

The first scientific exploration of the Antarctic dates to the end of the seventeenth century, when Sir Edmund Halley ventured just south of the Polar Front (about 60°S). During the following century, many scientific expeditions were undertaken to explore and describe the vast oceans surrounding the Antarctic continent. One of these expeditions, aboard the Belgian vessel, Belgica, provided the first winter scientific observations when it became beset in sea ice and spent the winter of 1898 drifting off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. About fifteen years later, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew overwintered on Elephant Island, …

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the presence of intracellular inclusions, Lewy bodies, and Lewy neurites, in the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and several other brain regions. Filamentous α-synuclein is the major component of these deposits and its aggregation is believed to play an important role in Parkinson's disease and several other neurodegenerative diseases. Two homologous proteins, β- and γ-synucleins, are also abundant in the brain. The synucleins are natively unfolded proteins. β-Synuclein, which lacks 11 central hydrophobic residues compared with its homologs, exhibited the properties of a random coil, whereas α- and γ-synucleins were slightly more …
