The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop Jan 2002

The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop

Theses : Honours

Mining operations in arid regions of Western Australia are faced with many environmental management issues. One such issue is the disposal of mine water to the environment. Mine water is commonly discharged to nearby salt lakes under licence by the Department of Environmental Protection. Licence conditions dictate that the discharge water and the receiving environment be monitored to allow impacts on the environment to be detected. Salt lakes are associated with vegetation communities dominated by halophytic members of the Chenopodiaceae, While these plants are tolerant of salinity extremes, the germination stage of many species requires periods of lowered salinity. There …

Alsea Valley Alliance V. Evans And The Meaning Of "Species" Under The Endangered Species Act: A Return To Congressional Intent, Leslie Marshall Lewallen, Russell C. Brooks Jan 2002

Alsea Valley Alliance V. Evans And The Meaning Of "Species" Under The Endangered Species Act: A Return To Congressional Intent, Leslie Marshall Lewallen, Russell C. Brooks

Seattle University Law Review

This article examines whether the Alsea decision's definition of species is consistent with the Endangered Species Act by examining the language of the ESA and Congressional intent. This article then examines some of the implications of the Alsea decision in the Northwest. Counting hatchery salmon would likely result in the removal of most salmon ESUs from the endangered or threatened list, ending many of the costly restrictions imposed by the ESA. In particular, Part I discusses the ESA provisions and congressional intent regarding the definition of species that is pertinent to understanding Alsea. Part II describes some of the …

Linking Change Initiatives: The Carnegie Academy For The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In The Company Of Other National Projects, Barbara Cambridge

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The scholarship of teaching and learning provides an overarching framework for progress on a number of important educational issues today. The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning encourages connections with other national projects that deal with issues such as defining student learning outcomes, building an infrastructure of support, and establishing evidence for purposes of accountability in mutually supportive ways. Connecting such efforts honors faculty time in the midst of multiple demands and raises the likelihood of significant, lasting impact on the quality of teaching and learning.

The Graphic Syllabus: Shedding A Visual Light On Course Organization, Linda B. Nilson Jan 2002

The Graphic Syllabus: Shedding A Visual Light On Course Organization, Linda B. Nilson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Students rarely understand how a course is organized from the week-by-week topical listing in traditional syllabi. This chapter explains a teaching tool called a graphic syllabus, which elucidates (and may improve) course design/organization and increases student retention of the material. It may resemble a flow chart or diagram or be designed around a graphic metaphor with another object. Included here are materials, experiences, and graphic syllabi from a workshop conducted several times on how to compose one (involving about 115 faculty and faculty developers). Graphic representations of text-based material appeal to the visual learning preferences of today’s students and complement …

A Modified Microteaching Model: A Cross–Disciplinary Approach To Faculty Development, John P. Hertel, Barbara J. Millis, Robert K. Noyd Jan 2002

A Modified Microteaching Model: A Cross–Disciplinary Approach To Faculty Development, John P. Hertel, Barbara J. Millis, Robert K. Noyd

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Three departments at the United States Air Force Academy successfully used a microteaching model to train new faculty. Like other models, its structured approach used videotaping and peer coaching. The model also contained several unique features, including a cross-disciplinary approach to supplement feedback from department members and focused small group feedback with built-in preparation time. Thus, this model results not only in enhanced teaching performance, but also in departmental and institutional collegiality.

Thin Layers And Camouflage: Hidden Pseudo-Nitzschia Spp. (Bacillariophyceae) Populations In A Fjord In The San Juan Islands, Washington, Usa, J. E. B. Rines, Percy L. Donaghay, M. M. Dekshenieks, J. M. Sullivan, M. S. Twardowski

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Two sets of observations were made on the distribution of Pseudo-nitzschia taxa in a fjord in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA. From May 21 to 31, 1996, we observed the spatio-temporal distribution of a dense bloom of P. fraudulenta. Microscopic observations of live material were compared to physical-optical water-column structure, currents and wind. At the start of the study, dense concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were observed directly at the surface. Optical profiles indicated that most cells were concentrated in a thin layer at ~5 m depth, which appeared to be contiguous throughout the sound. Several days later, sustained …

Huge accumulations of diatom-dominated marine snow (aggregates >0.5 mm in diameter) were observed in a layer approximately 50 cm thick persisting over a 24 h period in a shallow fjord in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA. The layer was associated with the 22.4 σt density surface. A second thin layer of elevated phytoplankton concentration located at a density discontinuity 1.5 to 2 m above the marine snow layer occurred within a dense diatom bloom near the surface. At the end of the study period, isopycnals shoaled and the 2 layers merged. More than 80% of the diatom bloom …

Modeling Phytoplankton Production: Problems With The Eppley Curve And An Empirical Alternative, Mark J. Brush, John W. Brawley, Scott W. Nixon, James N. Kremer

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Papers reporting the results of dynamic simulation models of aquatic ecosystems tend to show predicted concentrations of the state variables. The phytoplankton compartment is typically represented as predicted biomass, expressed as the concentration of chlorophyll a, particulate carbon, or particulate nitrogen. While computed values of phytoplankton biomass generally agree with observations, many of these same models significantly underestimate primary production. Existing simulation models often base the calculation of primary production on the Eppley curve, which sets the maximum daily phytoplankton growth rate as a function of temperature. Despite the apparent wide applicability of the Eppley curve, an increasing number …

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 4 - Drug Treatment Programs: Policy Implications For The Judiciary, Arthur H. Garrison Jan 2002

Court Review: Volume 38, Issue 4 - Drug Treatment Programs: Policy Implications For The Judiciary, Arthur H. Garrison

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Drug use in the United States has been cited for the growth in American prisons over the past decade. Heroin, once considered a drug to be avoided and scorned, has had resurgence in use by middle-class youth and white-collar professionals due to the increased purity of the drug and the lack of need to use needles for ingestion. Naltrexone has been used as a method of helping heroin addicts to end their drug dependency, but such programs have limitations in their use and effectiveness. This paper is drawn from an evaluation of a drug treatment program in Wilmington, Delaware. The …

Sampling in several habitat types (sand/mud, eelgrass, sand, gravel, macroalgae/mud) during all seasons with a variety of gears in Nauset Marsh, Massachusetts during 1985–1987 found a fauna consisting of 35 fish and 10 decapod crustacean species. Although most of the abundant species were found in several habitat types, species richness and habitat use appeared to be highest for vegetated habitats (eelgrass, macroalgae). The fishes and decapods were numerically dominated by cold-water taxa; however, numerous fish species, represented by rare individuals of predominantly southern forms, enriched the fauna. Species composition of Nauset Marsh could be distinguished from estuaries south of Cape …

Direct Measurements Of Light Attenuation By Epiphytes On Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Mark J. Brush, Scott W. Nixon Jan 2002

Direct Measurements Of Light Attenuation By Epiphytes On Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Mark J. Brush, Scott W. Nixon

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Declines in the seagrass Zostera marina L. in estuaries and lagoons have been attributed in part to reductions in irradiance reaching the seagrass blades. Epiphytes growing on Z. marina have the potential to attenuate a large fraction of the light that would otherwise reach the blades. This problem has previously been studied by measuring light penetration through homogenized epiphytic slurries or through glass slides fouled with epiphytes. However, the latter may not represent the natural succession or species composition found on live Z. marina leaves and the former does not preserve the structure of the epiphytic complex. Further, past studies …

Results of a single‐blind round‐robin comparison of satellite primary productivity algorithms are presented. The goal of the round‐robin exercise was to determine the accuracy of the algorithms in predicting depth‐integrated primary production from information amenable to remote sensing. Twelve algorithms, developed by 10 teams, were evaluated by comparing their ability to estimate depth‐integrated daily production (IP, mg C m−2) at 89 stations in geographically diverse provinces. Algorithms were furnished information about the surface chlorophyll concentration, temperature, photosynthetic available radiation, latitude, longitude, and day of the year. Algorithm results were then compared with IP estimates derived from 14C …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Ground And Excited States Of Coumarin 151 And Coumarin 120, Robert J. Cave, Kieron Burke, Edward W. Castner Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present calculations of various properties of the ground and excited states of Coumarins 151 and 120. These and related coumarins are important in investigating ultrafast solvation processes in liquids and complex solutions as well as being important acceptors in model electron-transfer systems. We calculate the following:  (1) the electronic excitation energies to several low-lying singlet states, (2) ground and excited-state dipole moments, (3) solvation effects on excitation energies, and (4) the properties of single Coumarin 151-water complexes. We test our Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations against CASSCF, CASPT2 (both single and multistate versions), CIS, and ZINDO. Using TDDFT, …
