Differentiating Between Forgiveness Of Self And Others, Dawn E. Glasener Jan 2002

Differentiating Between Forgiveness Of Self And Others, Dawn E. Glasener

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between self-forgiveness, forgiveness of others, and mental health. It also explored how self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others differ. Participants (N = 108) were recruited from a medium-sized Midwestern Catholic university. Participants answered self-report questionnaires concerning forgiveness of self and others, dispositional predictor variables (guilt, shame, religiousness, self-consciousness), and mental health (anger, depression, self-esteem). As hypothesized, self-forgiveness was negatively related to depression and self-consciousness and positively related to self-esteem. Forgiveness of others was negatively related to state anger, trait anger, and depression. Both self-forgiveness and forgiveness of others contributed uniquely to the prediction of depression. Furthermore, …

Book Review - Prairie Birds: Fragile Splendor In The Great Plains, Neil P. Bernstein Jan 2002

Book Review - Prairie Birds: Fragile Splendor In The Great Plains, Neil P. Bernstein

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Paul A. Johnsguard has established himself as one of the most prolific natural history writers in the recent past. Indeed, before I could finish reading Prairie Birds, the University of Kansas Press sent me The Nature of Nebraska, also by Johnsguard. These works follow closely after This Fragile Land, A Natural History of the Nebraska Sandhills (1995), which I favorably reviewed a few years ago, also about the Great Plains. It goes without saying, that there is a fair amount of overlap in these works, both in the subject matter and the illustrations. Rather than criticize the overlap among these …

Does Ec Pregnancy And Maternity Legislation Create Equal Opportunities For Women In The Ec Labor Market? The European Court Of Justice's Interpretation Of The Ec Pregnancy Directive In Boyle And Lewen, Petra Foubert Jan 2002

Does Ec Pregnancy And Maternity Legislation Create Equal Opportunities For Women In The Ec Labor Market? The European Court Of Justice's Interpretation Of The Ec Pregnancy Directive In Boyle And Lewen, Petra Foubert

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This article discusses the EC's legal accommodation of pregnancy in the workplace and the interpretation thereof by the European Court of Justice. The leitmotiv is the question to what extent such accommodation enhances women's position in the labor market. The suspicion being that, in a well-intentioned attempt to fight discrimination of women, the EC institutions entrench gender discrimination. In other words, in their attempt to fight sex discrimination (by accommodating pregnancy), the EC often places women in a position that confirms the traditional perception of women as childbearers and caregivers.

The Sexual Regulation Dimension Of Contemporary Welfare Law: A Fifty State Overview, Anna Marie Smith Jan 2002

The Sexual Regulation Dimension Of Contemporary Welfare Law: A Fifty State Overview, Anna Marie Smith

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

In this article, Smith will attempt to demonstrate that welfare policy has become a prominent site of sexual regulation; that the rights of poor single mothers are at stake in this respect; and that given the precise structure of contemporary American welfare reform, we must pay especially close attention to the laws and regulations adopted at the state level. First, Smith will place contemporary sexual regulation-oriented welfare law in an historical context by considering its precedents in English and American public policy traditions (Part I). Using original qualitative analyses of the states' statutory codes and administrative regulations, Smith will then …

Monitoring Herpetofauna In A Managed Forest Landscape: Effects Of Habitat Types And Census Techniques, Travis J. Ryan, Thomas Philippi, Yale A. Leiden, Michael E. Dorcas, T. Bently Wigley, J. Whitfield Gibbons Jan 2002

Monitoring Herpetofauna In A Managed Forest Landscape: Effects Of Habitat Types And Census Techniques, Travis J. Ryan, Thomas Philippi, Yale A. Leiden, Michael E. Dorcas, T. Bently Wigley, J. Whitfield Gibbons

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We surveyed the herpetofaunal (amphibian and reptile) communities inhabiting five types of habitat on a managed landscape. We conducted monthly surveys during 1997 in four replicate plots of each habitat type using several different methods of collection. Communities of the two wetland habitats (bottomland wetlands and isolated upland wetlands) were clearly dissimilar from the three terrestrial communities (recent clearcut, pine plantation, and mixed pine–hardwood forest). Among the three terrestrial habitats, the total herpetofaunal communities were dissimilar (P<0.10), although neither faunal constituent group alone (amphibians and squamate reptiles) varied significantly with regard to habitat. Three survey techniques used in the terrestrial habitats were not equally effective in that they resulted in the collection of different subsets of the total herpetofauna. The drift fence technique revealed the presence of more species and individuals in every habitat and was the only one to detect species dissimilarity among habitats. Nonetheless, coverboards contributed to measures of abundance and revealed species not detected by other techniques. We suggest that a combination of census techniques be used when surveying and monitoring herpetofaunal communities in order to maximize the detection of species.

Ultrastructure Of The Reproductive System Of The Black Swamp Snake (Seminatrix Pygaea). Part Iii. The Sexual Segment Of The Male Kidney., David M. Sever Jan 2002

Ultrastructure Of The Reproductive System Of The Black Swamp Snake (Seminatrix Pygaea). Part Iii. The Sexual Segment Of The Male Kidney., David M. Sever

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In mature male snakes and lizards, a distal portion of the nephron is hypertrophied in relation to its appearance in females and immature males. This sexual segment of the male kidney apparently provides seminal fluid that is mixed with sperm and released into the female cloaca during copulation. In this article, we provide the first study at the ultrastructural level of seasonal variation in the sexual segment of the kidney of a squamate, the natricine snake Seminatrix pygaea. Previous workers have indicated that the sexual segment is secretory only when the testes are spermatogenically active. The sexual segment of the …

Assessing Ice Storm Damage To Hardwood Forest Canopies Using The Advanced Solid-State Array Spectroradiometer (Asas) And Landsat Tm Imagery, James Stuart Burnett Jan 2002

Assessing Ice Storm Damage To Hardwood Forest Canopies Using The Advanced Solid-State Array Spectroradiometer (Asas) And Landsat Tm Imagery, James Stuart Burnett

Doctoral Dissertations

A major ice storm in January 1998 damaged 17 million acres of forestland in the Northeastern United States and Quebec Province. In July 1998 the airborne multiangle hyperspectral sensor, Advanced Solid-State Array Spectroradiometer (ASAS), acquired imagery for nine ice damaged target areas in the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF). Ice damage was also measured in situ at 288 sample plots. Radiance values for nadir ASAS images were normalized and the blue shift of the red edge was represented as the radiance value at 714 nm (714nr). The 714nr for 210 sites in 3 damage classes differentiated severely damaged sites from …

Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes Americanus Stock Enhancement In New Hampshire: Developing Optimal Release Strategies, Elizabeth Alden Fairchild Jan 2002

Winter Flounder Pseudopleuronectes Americanus Stock Enhancement In New Hampshire: Developing Optimal Release Strategies, Elizabeth Alden Fairchild

Doctoral Dissertations

As part of a program to assess the feasibility of winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, stock enhancement, optimal release size, site, season, and condition of cultured, juvenile winter flounder were evaluated.

To determine optimal release size, the predator-prey size relationship between winter flounder and the green crab, Carcinus maenas, was examined. The number of flounder killed per day was significantly higher (31%) in winter flounder <20 mm compared to all other larger fish size classes (4--8% killed/day). Additionally, these fish were attacked at a faster rate than any other fish size class. These results suggest that only flounder >20 mm should be released.

Field studies were conducted in three potential release sites in the Great Bay Estuary during 1999--2001 to determine optimal release site and season. Optimal site selection was based on growth and …

Ompd But Not Ompc Is Involved In Adherence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium To Human Cells, Bochiwe Hlezipi Hara-Kaonga

Doctoral Dissertations

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium expresses three major outer membrane proteins: OmpC, OmpF, and OmpD. Conflicting reports exist regarding the role of OmpC and OmpD in the pathogenesis of this organism. This study investigated the role of OmpC and OmpD in adherence to human U937 macrophages and T84 intestinal epithelial cells. OmpC and ompD mutant strains were created by transposon mutagenesis utilizing P22-mediated transduction of Tn10 and Tn 5 insertions into wild-type strain 14028. Fluorescein-labeled wild-type and mutant bacteria were incubated with PKH26-labeled T84 cells at various bacteria-to-cell ratios for 1 h at 37 C. Single and dual fluorescence of samples …

Photoprotective Role Of Beta -Carotene And Antioxidant Enzymes: A Shield Against Ultraviolet Damage In Dunaliella Bardawil, Andrea Lynn Grossman-White Jan 2002

Photoprotective Role Of Beta -Carotene And Antioxidant Enzymes: A Shield Against Ultraviolet Damage In Dunaliella Bardawil, Andrea Lynn Grossman-White

Doctoral Dissertations

Photosynthetic and antioxidant responses following exposure to an array of irradiances and frequencies were examined and contrasted in two species of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella. Species selection was based on the ability of Dunaliella bardawil (UTEX 2538) to accumulate massive quantities of inter-thylakoid beta-carotene during exposure to stress or high irradiances of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR: 400-700 nm) while Dunaliella salina (UTEX 200) lacks this ability. Cells were cultured in two irradiances (150 and 35 mumol photons ·m-2·s -1), and then exposed to high red (wavelengths > 590 nm) or blue light (390-540 nm; 150 mumol photons·m -2·s--1), ultraviolet-A (320-400 …

Community And Ecosystem Analysis Of Forests Recovering From Landslide Disturbance: White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, David M. Bryant Jan 2002

Community And Ecosystem Analysis Of Forests Recovering From Landslide Disturbance: White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire, David M. Bryant

Doctoral Dissertations

Sites recovering from landslide disturbance offer many opportunities to study ecosystem processes under extreme conditions. Landslides reset the topographic, microclimatic, parent material and vegetation state factors of ecosystem development. Water, and nutrient resources following landslides are more heterogenously distributed. Soil structure and development is disrupted. Solar insolation and diurnal temperature fluctuation exceed that of the surrounding forest. Consequently, plant colonization and community succession differ from less severely disturbed sites such as timber harvest or agricultural afforestation.

Two chapters of this dissertation address the unique conditions of landslide ecosystem development. Chapter 2 compares historical data collected in 1956 on a chronosequence …

Comparative Anatomy And Evolution Of The Gastrotrich Muscular System, Richard Hochberg Jan 2002

Comparative Anatomy And Evolution Of The Gastrotrich Muscular System, Richard Hochberg

Doctoral Dissertations

Gastrotrichs figure prominently in metazoan phylogeny because they share a suite of complex morphological characteristics with several other members of the Bilateria. But their microscopic size, cryptic interstitial habitat, and lack of fossil record have exacerbated the usual barriers to phylogenetic analysis. To arrive at a better understanding of gastrotrich systematics and evolution, cladistic analyses and detailed studies of the muscular system were performed.

A fluorescent F-actin stain was applied to whole mounts of 26 species of Gastrotricha to characterize the musculature. Muscle patterns were mapped, their functions inferred, and the direction of evolution hypothesized for several families. The musculature …

Magnetoacoustic Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microspheres, Huqun Liu Jan 2002

Magnetoacoustic Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microspheres, Huqun Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation was to investigate chemical applications of magnetoacoustic sensors based on swellable polymer microspheres. The magnetoacoustic sensor was used to monitor viscosity of starch solution, water loading, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate polymerization.

Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (polyVBC) microspheres were prepared by suspension polymerization and then derivatized to introduce dicarboxylate groups onto the polymer backbone. Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride-trichlorophenyl acrylate) (polyVBC-TCPA) microspheres were prepared by dispersion polymerization and then derivatized to introduce amine groups onto the polymer backbone. These derivatized polymer microspheres swell and shrink with changing pH. They were entrapped in a hydrogel membrane and the membrane turbidity was investigated by …
