Historical Overview Of Tampa Bay Water Quality And Seagrass Issues And Trends, J.O. R. Johansson Jan 2002

Historical Overview Of Tampa Bay Water Quality And Seagrass Issues And Trends, J.O. R. Johansson

Reports

Historical (pre-1930s) seagrass meadows in Tampa Bay are believed to have covered 31,000 ha of the shallow bay bottom. Later, impacts to the bay from increasing population and industrial development of the Tampa Bay area have resulted in large seagrass losses. By 1982, approximately 8,800 ha of seagrass remained. Since 1982, Tampa Bay seagrass monitoring programs have recorded a reversal in the trend of seagrass loss, with the baywide seagrass cover increasing from 9,420 ha in 1988 to 10,890 ha in 1997. However, between 1997 and 1999 the trend again reversed with substantial losses recorded, specifically in the Old Tampa …

Data Sets

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 2002.

Replacement Heifer Development For Spring And Summer Calving Herds, Gene H. Deutscher, Brent Plugge, Andy Applegarth, Rex Davis

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A three-year study on heifer development of spring-born (n=240) and summer-born heifers (n=146) was conducted using sandhills ranch management. Spring-born heifers developed during the winter to reach 53% of mature weight at breeding had similar reproduction and calf production as heifers that reached 57% of mature weight. Feed costs were $22/heifer less for the lighter weight heifers. Summer-born heifers that were developed to reach 60% of mature weight at breeding in early fall had normal yearling pregnancy rates, but rebreeding rates of the 2-year-old cows were low, which caused high culling rates. Two-year-old cows calving in May produced greater calf …

A Simulated Economic Analysis Of Altering Days On Feed And Marketing Cattle On Specific Value-Based Pricing Grids, Dillon Feuz Jan 2002

A Simulated Economic Analysis Of Altering Days On Feed And Marketing Cattle On Specific Value-Based Pricing Grids, Dillon Feuz

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Profit can be increased by feeding some pens of cattle additional days on feed and selling on a pricing grid that rewards quality. Discounts for Yield Grade 4 and heavy weight carcasses for as many as 10% to 15% of a pen may not exceed the premiums for higher grading carcasses and the benefit of selling additional weight on all cattle sold. While the grid price can be increased by feeding some pens of cattle fewer days and marketing on a yield grade rewarding grid, net returns are often decreased because of selling fewer total pounds.

Sorting Strategies In An Extensive Forage Utilization Beef Production System, James C. Macdonald, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Casey Macken, Jeffrey Folmer, Mark Blackford, D. J. Jordon

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

One hundred sixty crossbred steer calves were stratified by weight and allotted into four groups to test three sorting strategies against an unsorted control to compare methods of sorting long yearling steers to decrease variation in carcass weight and fat thickness, increase pounds of carcass weight sold, and increase profitability. Sorting by weight upon entry into the feedlot or by weight and fat thickness at the end of the feeding period increased average carcass weight. No statistical differences in variation or profitability were found, although numerical differences were present.

White Teachers, White Children, White Schools: Multiculturalism In Geographically Homogeneous Communities, Michelle (Mikki) Meadows

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study was intended to examine white teachers' reactions to the challenge of using transformative multiculturalEducation practices within predominately white classrooms in predominately white communities. Two research questions were addressed: (1) What are the personal constructs of teachers regarding their Whiteness? (2) How do constructs of Whiteness influence multiculturalEducation in a predominately white classroom? The researcher designed and implemented a training course for white teachers in predominately white environments. Sixteen early childhood professionals voluntarily participated in the course. As participants moved through the training course, data were collected from participant journals, transcripts of both training sessions and correspondences …

Identifying Terrorists: Privacy Rights In The United States And The United Kingdom, Joyce W. Luk

UC Law SF International Law Review

While the privacy concerns raised by technological advances are widely recognized, recent terrorist attacks and developments in surveillance and information technologies have led to a convergence of technologies that present new challenges to the right to privacy.

This Note gives a general background on video surveillance and facial recognition software and discusses the technology behind, and uses of, closed circuit television in the United States and elsewhere. The Note also explores the meaning of privacy, privacy rights, and their applicability to facial recognition technology, video surveillance, and other emerging surveillance technologies in the United States. It discusses privacy rights and …

Diverse Roles For The Eph Family Of Receptor Tyrosine Kinases In Carcinogenesis, Masaru Nakamoto, Andrew Bergeman Jan 2002

Diverse Roles For The Eph Family Of Receptor Tyrosine Kinases In Carcinogenesis, Masaru Nakamoto, Andrew Bergeman

Biology Faculty Publications

The Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases and their cell-presented ligands, the ephrins, are frequently overexpressed in a wide variety of cancers, including breast, small-cell lung and gastrointestinal cancers, melanomas, and neuroblastomas. In particular, one Eph family member, EphA2, is overexpressed in many cancers, including 40% of breast cancers. EphA2 can also transform breast epithelial cells in vitro to display properties commonly associated with the development of metastasis. Remarkably, the oncogenic properties of EphA2 contravene traditional dogma with regard to the oncogenic properties of a growth factor and its receptor tyrosine kinase: while stimulation of EphA2 by its ligand (ephrin-A1) …

Domain-Specific Olivocerebellar Projection Regulated By The Epha-Ephrin-A Interaction, Kazuhiko Nishida, John Flanagan, Masaru Nakamoto Jan 2002

Domain-Specific Olivocerebellar Projection Regulated By The Epha-Ephrin-A Interaction, Kazuhiko Nishida, John Flanagan, Masaru Nakamoto

Biology Faculty Publications

Neural maps in the vertebrate central nervous system often show discontinuously segregated, domain-to-domain patterns. However, the molecular mechanism that establishes such maps is not well understood. Here we show that in the chicken olivocerebellar system, EphA receptors and ephrin-As are expressed with distinct levels and combinations in mapping domains. When ephrin-A2 is retrovirally overexpressed in the cerebellum, the olivocerebellar map is disrupted, excluding axons with high receptor activity from ectopic expression domains. Conversely, overexpression of a truncated EphA3 receptor in the cerebellum reduces endogenous ligand activity to undetectable levels and causes aberrant mapping, with high receptor axons invading high ligand …
