A Simple Method For Estimating Larval Supply In Reef Fishes And A Preliminary Test Of Population Limitation By Larval Delivery In The Kelp Bass Paralabrax Clathratus, Mark A. Steele, John C. Malone, Amy M. Findlay, Mark H. Carr, Graham E. Forrester Jan 2002

Forrester

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper describes a method for estimating larval supply of a temperate reef fish, the kelp bass Paralabrax clathratus, that is simple, inexpensive, requires relatively low effort, and integrates larval supply over time. Using this method, we sampled larval supply concurrently at 4 sites spread over about 35 km for nearly an entire settlement season. With these data and visual estimates of recruitment (the density of young-of-the-year after the end of the settlement season), we tested the hypothesis that spatial patterns in recruitment were set by larval supply. This hypothesis was rejected: kelp bass recruitment to the 4 sites …

Legal Presumptions And The Role Of Mental Health Professionals In Child Custody Proceedings, Janet M. Bowermaster Jan 2002

Legal Presumptions And The Role Of Mental Health Professionals In Child Custody Proceedings, Janet M. Bowermaster

Duquesne Law Review

In child custody cases, mental health professionals are frequently used to evaluate the fitness of parents, the effects of child-parent separation, and the best interest of the child. Frequently, however, the courts delegate custody decision-making authority to those mental health professionals. This article examines the history and use of legal presumptions in child custody law, and ultimately questions the propriety of the role that mental health professionals currently play in custody disputes.

The Educational Pipelinie For Women In Biology: No Longer Leaking?, Louise Luckenbill-Edds

ADVANCE Library Collection

Describing the past 30 years of progress toward gender equity in science, one observer wrote: "Although optimistic about future prospects, I must also point out some daunting toads and serpents lurking in the gardens of science. These challenge the rising generation of young scientists to be no less intrepid [that past activists who catalyzed change]" (Herschbach 1999, p. 66). The failure of the sciences to attract and retain women has meant a loss of diversity, as well as a loss of talent and creativity, that impoverishes research viewpoints and limits effective communication of science with diverse sectors of society.

Environmental Assessment : Middle Salt Creek Canyon Access Plan Canyonlands National Park, Utah, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Salt Creek is the largest drainage in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. The creek supports one of the most important riparian ecosystems in the park. It is also the heart of the Salt Creek National Register Archeological District, the area with the highest recorded density of archeological sites in the park. A tributary canyon contains the spectacular Angel Arch, a well-known geologic formation that for many years has been a destination point for park visitors. In 1998 the U.S. District Court for the State of Utah ruled, in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, that …

Safeguarding Species, Languages, And Cultures In The Time Of Diversity Loss: From The Colorado Plateau To Global Hotspots, Gary Paul Nabhan, Patrick Pynes, Tony Joe

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Hotspots of biodiversity have become priority areas for land conservation initiatives, oftentimes without recognition that these areas are hotspots of cultural diversity as well. Using the Colorado Plateau ecoregion as a case study, this inquiry (1) outlines the broad geographic patterns of biological diversity and ethnolinguistic diversity within this ecoregion; (2) discusses why these two kinds of diversity are often influenced by the same geographic and historic factors; and (3) suggests what can be done to integrate traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous peoples into multicultural conservation collaborations.

Crop Production On The Lunar Surface Using Solar Fiber Optics: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Bruce Bugbee, Julie K. Chard Jan 2002

Crop Production On The Lunar Surface Using Solar Fiber Optics: Mitigating The Effects Of Prolonged Darkness With Low Temperature And Low Light, Bruce Bugbee, Julie K. Chard

NASA

Plant metabolism and growth are reduced in low temperature. As metabolism slows, energy requirements are reduced and less light is needed. The temperature should be maintained above the chilling temperature for the plant, which is species dependent. The addition of light will allow the plant to continue to expend energy on maintenance and some growth. Here we show that low light and cool temperatures can be used to maintain plants through the 14.7 days on the dark side of the Moon. Growth resumes immediately after the light is restored.

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means Jan 2002

Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Iron complex chemistry that opens a new door to the medicinal and pharmaceutical worlds is the aim of this research. Specifically, ortho-quinone methide moieties are intermediates in several antitumor drugs and have been identified as bioreductive alkylators of DNA. In our research, a class of iron compounds has been targeted to resemble these quinone methides. It is hoped that these new compounds could be modified to provide a window of opportunity toward the discovery of a selective mode of drug delivery. We have focused our efforts on generating a reactive transition metal complexed 5-membered ring analog of o-quinone methide based …

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman Jan 2002

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

A decline in Northwest Arkansas's native plant population has occurred over the past 50 years, as documented by the U.S. Forest Service in the Ozark-Ouachita Highlands Assessment. This decline has been caused by increased human development in natural areas and the replacement of native plants with exotic, non-native plants. As a result, a generation has grown up not knowing what an Ozark wake Robin trillium (Trillium pusillum var. ozarkanum) or Blood root (Sanguinaria canadensis) Look like, because these plants are difficult to find in nature, are not commonly grown in designed landscapes, and are Largely unavailable in garden centers. The …

Characterization Of Wound-Inducible Genes Encoding Enzymes For Terpenoid Biosynthesis In Medicago Truncatula, Mandy M. Cox Jan 2002

Characterization Of Wound-Inducible Genes Encoding Enzymes For Terpenoid Biosynthesis In Medicago Truncatula, Mandy M. Cox

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In addition to having numerous applications as food flavorings and pharmaceuticals, terpenoids are an important class of defensive compounds that can accumulate in plants after pathogen infection or injury by insects. Sequences of DNA encoding putative terpene synthases and an oxidosqualene synthase, isolated from insect-damaged Medicago truncatula leaves, were selected from an expressed sequence tag (EST) database. The eDNA clones were used as radiolabeled probes to analyze gene expression in leaves treated with factors known to trigger a defense response in plants. Transcript levels for all of the genes examined increased in response to artificial wounding, insect herbivory, and methyl …

Properties Of Modified Tryptophans In A Membrane- Spanning Channel, Erin M. Scherer Jan 2002

Properties Of Modified Tryptophans In A Membrane- Spanning Channel, Erin M. Scherer

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

An emerging concept in biology assigns the amino acid tryptophan specific roles at the membrane/water interface that help to determine the conformation and biological function of membrane-spanning proteins. Previous studies involving the antibiotic model system gramicidin A (gA) have illustrated the importance of the indole ring of tryptophan (Trp) in anchoring proteins to a bilayer membrane and promoting ionic currents. To further investigate these phenomena, derivatives of Trp that have lost hydrogen-bonding ability (1-methyl-Trp ), have an altered dipole moment (7-aza-Trp), or both (1-methyl-7-azaTrp) were chosen for incorporation into gA. Gramicidin analogues that incorporate these modified Trps were then analyzed …

Shannon Research Press

This study had four major purposes. First, the study developed and used scales to measure the strength and coherence of students', teachers', and scientists' views, beliefs and attitudes in relation to science, technology and society (STS). Second, the factors which influenced the development of strong and coherent views on STS by students, were examined. Third, the study investigated whether male and female students differed in the strength and coherence of their views on STS. Fourth, structured group interviews with teachers provided information for the consideration of the problems encountered by teachers and students in the introduction of STS courses.

Power Of Pregnancy: Examining Constitutional Rights In A Gestational Surrogacy Contract, Alayna Ohs Jan 2002

Power Of Pregnancy: Examining Constitutional Rights In A Gestational Surrogacy Contract, Alayna Ohs

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Modern technology has changed the way we look at pregnancy. Some parties seeking to utilize new technologies have entered into gestational surrogacy contracts, where a genetically unrelated woman acts as a surrogate, gestating an implanted embryo. While surrogacy contracts allow many people to parent in situations that might not otherwise be possible, they often fail to account for the important Constitutional interests of the gestational surrogate. This note argues that the idea of motherhood must be reconceputalized in the gestational surrogacy contract, so that the rights accorded to the surrogate are recognized as rights distinct from those of the "mother." …

Physical And Numerical Modeling Of The Role Of Hydrodynamic Processes On Adult-Larval Interactions Of A Suspension-Feeding Bivalve, Mats Lindegarth, Per R. Jonsson, Carl André Jan 2002

Physical And Numerical Modeling Of The Role Of Hydrodynamic Processes On Adult-Larval Interactions Of A Suspension-Feeding Bivalve, Mats Lindegarth, Per R. Jonsson, Carl André

Journal of Marine Research

The importance of hydrodynamic processes for adult-larval interactions in the cockle, Cerastoderma edule, was examined through physical and numerical modeling. A set of physical experiments in a flow-tank using adult cockles and larval mimics showed that the settlement of particles was affected by adult cockles. Settlement was reduced by 20% in an area of 2.5 cm2 surrounding the siphons, and the most marked decrease occurred near the inhalant siphon. On a larger spatial scale downstream of the siphons, settlement was more heterogeneous compared to surfaces without cockles. The experimental results near individual cockles were compared with numerical models …

Numerical Solution Of The Two-Layer Shallow Water Equations With Bottom Topography, Rick Salmon Jan 2002

Numerical Solution Of The Two-Layer Shallow Water Equations With Bottom Topography, Rick Salmon

Journal of Marine Research

We present a simple, robust numerical method for solving the two-layer shallow water equations with arbitrary bottom topography. Using the technique of operator splitting, we write the equations as a pair of hyperbolic systems with readily computed characteristics, and apply third-order-upwind differences to the resulting wave equations. To prevent the thickness of either layer from vanishing, we modify the dynamics, inserting an artificial form of potential energy that becomes very large as the layer becomes very thin. Compared to high-order Riemann schemes with flux or slope limiters, our method is formally more accurate, probably less dissipative, and certainly more efficient. …

Sverdrup-Like Theories Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Chris W. Hughes Jan 2002

Sverdrup-Like Theories Of The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, Chris W. Hughes

Journal of Marine Research

Two Sverdrup-like theories of the Antarctic Cirumpolar Current (ACC) have been proposed, due to Stommel and Webb, both of which assume an idealized geometry for the Southern Ocean in which all latitudes are blocked by either continents or "effective continents" consisting of major topographic features. However, the two models predict quite different dependencies of the ACC transport on wind stress: Stommel's model predicting transport proportional to wind stress curl, and Webb's model predicting transport proportional to the zonal wind stress. A generalization of Webb's model is shown to be equivalent to Godfrey's Island Rule, applied to an island straddling the …

Floral Patterns In The California Current System Off Southern California: 1990–1996, E. L. Venrick

Journal of Marine Research

In 1990, CalCOFI cruises began routine collection of samples for the enumeration of phytoplankton species. From each quarterly cruise, nearsurface samples from 34 stations are pooled into four regional samples prior to counting. This paper summarizes the first 6.5 years of the program in order to identify major large-scale patterns of species composition and fluctuations. A total of 312 species were recognized during this study. Recurrent group analysis defines two major floral clusters. The first is composed of diatoms characteristic of enriched regions. This cluster is most abundant in the northeastern region and often attains maximum abundances in the spring. …

Zooplankton Biomass And Indices Of Feeding And Metabolism In Relation To An Upwelling Filament Off Northwest Africa, S. Hernández-León, C. Almeida, A. Portillo-Hahnefeld, M. Gómez, J. M. Rodríguez, J. Arístegui Jan 2002

Zooplankton Biomass And Indices Of Feeding And Metabolism In Relation To An Upwelling Filament Off Northwest Africa, S. Hernández-León, C. Almeida, A. Portillo-Hahnefeld, M. Gómez, J. M. Rodríguez, J. Arístegui

Journal of Marine Research

Zooplankton biomass and indices of grazing (gut fluorescence), respiration (electron transfer system activity, ETS) and growth (aspartate transcarbamylase, ATC) were studied in relation to an upwelling filament off northwest Africa during August 1993. The filament extended 150 km offshore into the oligotrophic waters. It was generated by a trapped, quasi-permanent cyclonic eddy located between the Canary Islands and the African shelf. High biomass, specific gut fluorescence and electron transfer system activity in zooplankton were observed along the filament structure. In contrast, low values of biomass, gut fluorescence, ETS and ATC specific activities were found in the center of the trapped …

Acoustic Remote-Sensing Of Reef Benthos In Broward County, Florida (Usa), Ryan P. Moyer, Bernhard Riegl, Richard E. Dodge, Brian K. Walker, David S. Gilliam

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Benthic assemblages of variable density cover three progressively deeper ridges that parallel the Broward County, Florida, coast. An acoustic bottom classification survey using QTCView5 with a 50 kHz transducer showed different acoustic classes on the shallow reef-ridge and the two deeper reef-lines, which both showed the same acoustic signature. Ground-truthing showed that the differences in acoustic signature corresponded to different benthic assemblages: nearshore hardgrounds had low live cover and were dominated by algae covering substrate, the two deeper reef-ridges had the same acoustic signature and similar benthic assemblages (dominated by sponges and gorgonians). The QTCView5 was also able to differentiate …

An Investigation Into Traits Common To Structured Ministers And Traits Common To Musical Ministers, Matthew Cullum

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines behaviors and preferences that are characteristic of different positions of service inside a nonprofit church organization. Interviews with incumbents in the Structural Ministry and the Musical Ministry involved with the churches of Christ in Nashville, Tennessee, were conducted to identify traits and behaviors common to these distinct groups. The traits and behaviors identified in these interviews were then used to predict college students' future membership into these positions. The NEO-FFI (Costa & McCrae, 1992) was also administered in order to assess the incremental value of a professionally developed instrument. The instrument successfully identified group membership, although some …
