Characterization Of Cd4-Induced Epitopes On The Hiv Type 1 Gp120 Envelope Glycoprotein Recognized By Neutralizing Human Monoclonal Antibodies, Shi-Hua Xiang, Najah Doka, Rabeéa K. Choudhary, Joseph Sodroski, James E. Robinson

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The entry of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) into target cells typically requires the sequential binding of the viral exterior envelope glycoprotein, gp120, to CD4 and a chemokine receptor. CD4 binding exposes gp120 epitopes recognized by CD4-induced (CD4i) antibodies, which can block virus binding to the chemokine receptor. We identified three new CD4i antibodies from an HIV-1-infected individual and localized their epitopes. These epitopes include a highly conserved gp120 β-strand encompassing residues 419–424, which is also important for binding to the CCR5 chemokine receptor. All of the CD4i antibodies inhibited the binding of gp120–CD4 complexes to CCR5. CD4i antibodies and …

Ec02-172 Plumeless Thistle, Kara L. Hilgenfeld, Alex Martin Jan 2002

Ec02-172 Plumeless Thistle, Kara L. Hilgenfeld, Alex Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Plumeless thistle (Carduus acanthoides L.) is one of seven noxious weeds in Nebraska. An introduced invasive broadleaf weed native to Europe and Asia, plumeless thistle currently infests about 65,000 acres in Nebraska. Infestations of plumeless thistle may reduce productivity of pastures and rangeland, where infestations tend to be the largest. Plumeless thistle competes with and suppresses growth of desirable species. Heavy infestations prevent livestock from grazing the area and lighter infestations prevent livestock from eating plants growing near the thistle. Estimates place the annual loss in Nebraska agricultural production due to plumeless thistle at $162,000. Although plumeless thistle is …

The Abcs And Ntbs Of Gmos: The Great European Union-United States Trade Debate - Do European Restrictions On The Trade Of Genetically Modified Organisms Violate Internaitonal Trade Law, Sarah Lively

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The genetic engineering of agriculture has spurred a lively worldwide discussion, and the technology has found both enthusiastic fans and formidable foes. Specifically, the United States has signed on as a proponent of the genetic modification of agriculture. In fact, the United States has become the largest producer of genetically modified organisms ("GMOs") and is consequently the leading exporter of genetically modified goods. On the other side of this debate lies the European Community ("EC"). The European Community is much less enthusiastic about GMOs and effectively questions their presence in our environment and food products. The European Community has focused …

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2002

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

It is not common to find media reports on the failures of science education; nor uncommon to hear prestigious scientists publicly lament the rise of anti-science attitudes. Given the position elementary teachers have in influencing children, anti-science sentiment amongst them would be a significant concern. Hence, this article reports an investigation where preservice elementary teachers responded to the Thinking about Science survey instrument. This newly developed instrument addresses the broad relationship of science to nine important areas of society and culture and is intended to reveal the extent of views being consistent with or disagreeing with a commonly held worldview …

Culturally Important Issues And Science: A Gender And Science-Interest Investigation, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Elementary science methods students nearing completion of their preservice teacher preparation are an important source for gauging views about science and its relation to culture. This research investigates gender and science interest as correlates of the valuation of science vis-à-vis nine culturally important categories as measured by the Thinking About Science Survey. Over one thousand male and female students at a large midwestern university took part in this study.

The Role Of Suggestions And Personality Characteristics In Producing Illness Reports And Desires For Suing The Responsible Party, Marc A. Lindberg Ph.D.

Psychology Faculty Research

For this project, 92 students entered an abandoned theater room in an old basement of the university where sand was scattered throughout. The purpose of the study was to experimentally demonstrate that psychological suggestions could produce illness reports and to explore who is most likely to say that they would sue for personal damages. The students filled out the Trait-State Anger Scale and two subscales, Anger Temperament and Anger Reaction as well as the Costello-Corey Anxiety Scale, the Hardiness Inventory, the Pennebaker Inventory of Limbic Languidness, and, embedded in the Hardiness Inventory, measures of current illness as a result of …

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland Jan 2002

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle Jan 2002

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Economic prescriptions for the sustainable management of fisheries have typically been framed in the context of commercial fisheries. Fishery management failures have been characterized as a consequence of disjointedness between individually rational decisions and globally sensible outcomes-the "tragedy of the commons". The solutions proposed by economists flow from the insight that rational self-interest can lead to socially beneficial outcomes when ownership is secure and prices reflect the opportunity cost of resource use. Theoretical and empirical analyses have demonstrated that sole ownership, individual quotas, territorial use rights, fishing cooperatives, and common property management regimes can promote biologically and economically sustainable fisheries. …

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc Jan 2002

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc

All USU Press Publications

From the Introduction: "Contemporary Composition is still inflected by the epistemic turn taken in the 1980s, convincing me that we need to remember what we've forgotten—namely, how impassioned resolves and thrilling discoveries were abandoned and why. I'd like to retrace the road not taken in Composition Studies, to salvage what can still be recovered... I want to inspect the wreckage, in order to show what was the promise of the Happenings for Composition, as well as the huge gray longueur of its pale replacement, Eighties Composition. In so doing, I hope to begin a reconfiguration of our field's pre- and …

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Supplemental Instruction: The Problem Of Selection Bias And Limited Dependent Variables, Tyler J. Bowles, Jason Jones Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Supplemental Instruction: The Problem Of Selection Bias And Limited Dependent Variables, Tyler J. Bowles, Jason Jones

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Single equation regression models have been used rather extensively to test the effectiveness of Supplemental Instruction (SI). This approach, however, fails to account for the possibility that SI attendance and the outcome of SI attendance are jointly determined endogenous variables. Moreover, the standard approach fails to account for the fact that these two endogenous variables are categorical. This paper presents and applies a simultaneous equation, limited dependent variable model of SI effectiveness. Our analysis suggests that results from applying this type of model may differ markedly from the traditional statistical models applied in SI research. Specifically, our results suggests that …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner Jan 2002

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Unligated And Ligated Feii Porphyrins, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The electronic structure and bonding in a series of unligated and ligated FeII porphyrins (FeP) are investigated by density functional theory (DFT). All the unligated four-coordinate iron porphyrins have a 3A2g ground state that arises from the (dxy)2(dz2)2(dπ)2 configuration. The calculations confirm experimental results on Fe tetraphenylporphine but do not support the resonance Raman assignment of Fe octaethylporphine as 3Eg, nor the early assignment of Fe octamethyltetrabenzporphine as 5B2g. For the six-coordinate Fe–P( …

Electronic Structure And Bonding In Metal Porphyrins, Metal=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, M.-S. Liao, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A systematic theoretical study of the electronic structure and bonding in metal meso-tetraphenyl porphines MTPP, M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn has been carried out using a density functional theory method. The calculations provide a clear elucidation of the ground states for the MTPPs and for a series of [MTPP]x ions (x = 2+, 1+, 1−, 2−, 3−, 4−), which aids in understanding a number of observed electronic properties. The calculation supports the experimental assignment of unligated FeTPP as 3A2g, which arises from the configuration (dxy)2(dz …
