Stemborer Parasitism By Cotesia Sesamiae And Strurmiopsis Parasitica And An Assessment Of The Need To Introduce Cotesia Flavipes Into Zimbabwe, Peter Chinwada
All PhD Dissertations
Stemboreres are major pests of maize and sorghum in Zimbabwe. An analysis of the research work on cereal stemborers in the country revealed several gaps for which information is required. Thus, as a way of bridging the identified information gaps, the studies reported in this thesis were conducted mainly to provide information on the distribution, abundance and seasonal occurrence of stemborers and their natural enemies, parasitoid seasonal carryover mechanisms and parasitoid biology, and to assess the need for the introduction of the exotic larval end parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The seasonal occurrence of cereal stemborers and their natural …
Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball
Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Rainfall patterns, soil factors, topography, climate, and land use may all influence runoff. To minimize environmental concerns, excessive runoff should be avoided on areas where manure has been applied. Management practices used to control runoff include contouring, strip cropping, conservation tillage, terraces, and buffer strips. In some cases, secondary containment systems, sedimentation basins, or ponds may be necessary to collect runoff. More than one runoff-control practice may be necessary for protection in areas with high runoff potential. Soil properties, including infiltration, may be improved by manure application. The method, rate and timing of manure application should be considered to reduce …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCHI) mediates the first and committing step of the pterin branch of the folate-synthesis pathway. In microorganisms and mammals, GCHI is a homodecamer of ≈26-kDa subunits. Genomic approaches identified tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs specifying ≈50-kDa proteins containing two GCHI-like domains in tandem and indicated that such bimodular proteins occur in other plants. Neither domain of these proteins has a full set of the residues involved in substrate binding and catalysis in other GCHIs. The tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs nevertheless encode functional enzymes, as shown by complementation of a yeast fol2 mutant and by assaying GCHI activity …

The Last Time I Saw Fritz, Marc L. Joslyn
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Zen is not merely an exotic practice imported from the Orient; it is the constantly fresh
realization ofTrue Nature everywhere and at every time. So, it may be expected that sparks
of Zen will be found in all cultures. Hence, having been engaged with Zen practice since 1964,
the author reminisces here about how he turned to Zen after his study of Gestalt psychology
and his encounter with Gestalt therapy in the person ofFritz Perls. Gestalt therapy as usually
practiced is not Zen, the author concludes. But if it clears the way for a glimmer of the Self
which has …

Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite
Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Recent drought events in the United States and the magnitude of drought losses indicate the continuing vulnerability of the country to drought. Until recently, drought management in many states, including Nebraska, has been largely response oriented with little or no attention to mitigation and preparedness. In 1998, Nebraska began to revise its drought plan in order to place more emphasis on mitigation. One of the main aspects of drought mitigation and planning is the assessment of who and what is vulnerable and why. This paper presents a method for spatial, Geographic Information Systems-based assessment of agricultural drought vulnerability in Nebraska. …

Spatial Representation Of Agroclimatology In A Study Of Agricultural Drought, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Kenneth Hubbard, Donald A. Wilhite
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Agricultural drought is the leading cause for crop failure throughout the world. In the USA, significant impacts of recent droughts on agricultural production indicate the continuing vulnerability of the country to drought. This paper presents a methodology for spatial representation of the agroclimatic component of agricultural drought vulnerability. This methodology was developed as a part of an integrated assessment of drought vulnerability. For the spatial analysis, the state of Nebraska was selected as a study area because of the considerable variation in climatology, soil characteristics, land use, and cropping patterns. The underlying approach assumes that the best spatial characterization of …

Space Time Event Motion (Stem) – A Better Metaphor And A New Concept, Joseph Naimo
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
The content of this paper is primarily the product of an attempt to understand consciousness by working through the Gestell - conventionalised epistemology, at least some of several foundational concepts. This paper indirectly addresses the ancient question: “How is objective reference – or intentionality, possible? How is it possible for one thing to direct its thoughts upon another thing?” (Chisholm, 1981:1) As such, I have adopted a holistic methodology; one in which I develop a framework based on a form of process philosophy and descriptive emergentism (1). Many of the problems associated within the philosophy of mind arise because of …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The isolation and characterization of a virus (designated EhV) that infects the marine coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay & Mohler are described. Three independent clones of EhV were isolated from Norwegian coastal waters in years 1999 and 2000. EhV is a double-stranded DNA-containing virus with a genome size of ~415 kilo-base pairs. The viral particle is an icosahedron with a diameter of 160–180 nm. The virus particle contains at least nine proteins ranging from 10 to 140 kDa; the major capsid protein weighs ~54 kDa. EhV has a latent period of 12–14 h and a burst size of 400–1,000 (mean, …

Small Grains: 2002 Variety Recommendations, 2001 Crop Performance Results, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State University, United States Department Of Agriculture
SDSU Extension Circulars
Variety selection is a fundamental element in a sound crop production program. This report contains variety recommendations, descriptions, and yield data for the spring-seeded small grains – hard red spring wheat, oat, and barley – along with the fall-seeded small grain, hard red winter wheat. Key factors in variety selection include yield, yield stability, maturity, straw strength, height, test weight, quality, and disease resistance. Yield is an important factor; however, a variety with good disease resistance, straw strength, and high grain quality may be more profitable in some cases than the highest yielding variety. Disease resistance information is based on …

Understanding Out-Of-Class Communication Between Instructors And Students: Student Biological Sex, Psychological Gender, And Status As A Communication Major, Brooks Aylor, Patrice Opplinger
Understanding Out-Of-Class Communication Between Instructors And Students: Student Biological Sex, Psychological Gender, And Status As A Communication Major, Brooks Aylor, Patrice Opplinger
Iowa Journal of Communication
Out-of-class communication (OCC) has been found to be valuable for the professional, academic, and personal development of students and instructors. To better understand and promote these interactions, the current study examined student characteristics associated with OCC frequency, satisfaction and content. Consistent with research in other communication contexts, students' levels of masculinity and femininity-but not biological sex-were associated with increased informal ace, satisfaction with ace, and use of OCC to socialize with instructors. Further, we found significant differences between communication students and instructors and non-communication students and instructors.
Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis
Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Effects of the leaf extract Ginkgo biloba, ginkgolides A and B, and the amino acid taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) on platelet aggregation was studied. All potential anitcoagulants were incubated in day one platelet-rich plasma and subjected to various agonist-induced clotting and tests and other measures of platelet viability. G. biloba extract and its respective ginkgolides had no effect on platelet aggregation in response to ADP and thrombin, while taurine exhibited prolongation of thrombin time (TT) and reduced thrombin-induced aggregation by 10%. Taurine prolonged time of initial clot formation on thrombolestographic tests, but overall clot viability remained unaffected. These data …
Regulation Of Cardiomyocyte Cell Death In Culture, Deanna Lund
Regulation Of Cardiomyocyte Cell Death In Culture, Deanna Lund
All Volumes (2001-2008)
Heart failure is the inability of body's cardiac output to keep pace with its demand for supplies and waste removal. It is characterized by systolic and diastolic ventricular dysfunction, cardiac remodeling, myocyte loss and fibrosis (Nyquist-Battie et al, 1996). It is accompanied by an increase in sympathetic activity with measurable increases in circulating plasma norepinephrine levels (Hasegawa et al. 2001; Kaye et al., 1995). Previous studies have suggested that adrenergic agonists play a role in myocardial cell death. Mann et al. (1992) have shown that increased activation of the adrenergic signaling pathway causes necrotic as well as apoptotic death in …

The Postcranial Skeleton Of The Family Limnoscelidae And Its Taxonomic Implications For Understanding Basal Amniotes, Natalia Kazimiera Wideman
The Postcranial Skeleton Of The Family Limnoscelidae And Its Taxonomic Implications For Understanding Basal Amniotes, Natalia Kazimiera Wideman
Theses Digitization Project
The Diadectomorpha is a central taxon in understanding the origin and early evolution of amniotes. It is considered a sister taxon to Amniota and is so similar to amniotes that some researchers have placed it within the Amniota itself. This group is composed of three families: the Limnoscelidae, the Tseajaiidae, and the Diadectidae. Being the most basal member of this group, the family Limnoscelidae is especially important in these studies.

Osmotic Borders: Thinking Locally, Thinking Globally About The Causes And Effects Of Labor Migration, Roberto L. Corrada
Osmotic Borders: Thinking Locally, Thinking Globally About The Causes And Effects Of Labor Migration, Roberto L. Corrada
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus defines osmosis both as "any process by which something is acquired by absorption," and as a biological cellular function by which solvents are absorbed through semipermeable partitions. The two articles by Professor Sylvia Lazos and Donna Maeda, which both deal with the causes and effects of labor migration, though on different levels and involving different populations, challenge traditional notions of the physical and metaphysical borders between nation-states.
In "Latina/o-ization" of the Midwest: Cambio de Colores, Professor Sylvia Lazos takes a close look at the increasing migration and presence of Latinas/os in the Midwest, particularly Kansas, …
A Scoping Study Of Water Quality Conditions In The Missouri National Recreational River Reach From Near Gavins Point Dam To Ponca State Park, Nebraska
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
The unchannelized reach of the Missouri River below Gavins Point Dam has several ongoing water resource management issues that involve and affect the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). Water quality management considerations are of particular importance to three issues: 1) management of a portion of the reach as a recreational river under the Federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, 2) the reach is included in an action area identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under the Federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) for three species (pallid sturgeon, least tern, and piping plover) identified as being in jeopardy, …
Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook
Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
During muscle cell (i.e. myocyte )development, organization of actin and myosin into the contractile unit (i.e. sarcomere) is required for proper muscle contraction. By disrupting the processes of muscle cell development, I am able to see which steps play important roles in proper maturation of myocytes. Elucidation of the key pathways in muscle development could lead to a better understanding of human cardiac hypertrophies and muscle myopathies. Since actin filament formation precedes myosin organization, I am using actin assembly inhibitors to determine if actin filaments are a necessary prerequisite for myosin organization. It is hypothesized that disruption of actin will …
