Predicting The Spatial Dynamics Of Rabies Epidemics On Heterogeneous Landscapes, David L. Smith, Brendan Lucey, Lance A. Waller, James E. Childs, Leslie A. Real Jan 2002

Predicting The Spatial Dynamics Of Rabies Epidemics On Heterogeneous Landscapes, David L. Smith, Brendan Lucey, Lance A. Waller, James E. Childs, Leslie A. Real

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Often as an epidemic spreads, the leading front is irregular, reflecting spatial variation in local transmission rates. We developed a methodology for quantifying spatial variation in rates of disease spread across heterogeneous landscapes. Based on data for epidemic raccoon rabies in Connecticut, we developed a stochastic spatial model of rabies spread through the state’s 169 townships. We quantified spatial variation in transmission rates associated with human demography and key habitat features. We found that large rivers act as semipermeable barriers, leading to a 7-fold reduction in the local rates of propagation. By combining the spatial distribution of major rivers with …

Preclinical Diagnosis Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Captive Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) And White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Using Tonsillar Biopsy, Margaret A. Wild, Terry R. Spraker, Christina J. Sigurdson, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Michael W. Miller Jan 2002

Preclinical Diagnosis Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Captive Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) And White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Using Tonsillar Biopsy, Margaret A. Wild, Terry R. Spraker, Christina J. Sigurdson, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Michael W. Miller

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The usefulness of tonsillar biopsy on live deer for preclinical diagnosis of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy chronic wasting disease (CWD) was evaluated. Disease was tracked in a CWD-endemic herd using serial tonsillar biopsies collected at 6 to 9 month intervals from 34 captive mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and five white-tailed deer (O. virginianus). Tonsillar biopsies were examined for accumulation of PrPCWD, the protein marker for infection, using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. 26/34 (76%) mule deer and 4/5 (80%) white-tailed deer had PrPCWD accumulation in tonsillar biopsies; CWD was subsequently confirmed by post-mortem examination in …

Pregnancy Status And Fetal Prion Genetics Determine PrpSc Accumulation In Placentomes Of Scrapieinfected Sheep, Wenbin Tuo, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Dongyue Zhuang, William P. Cheevers, Terry R. Spraker, Donald P. Knowles Jan 2002

Pregnancy Status And Fetal Prion Genetics Determine PrpSc Accumulation In Placentomes Of Scrapieinfected Sheep, Wenbin Tuo, Katherine I. O'Rourke, Dongyue Zhuang, William P. Cheevers, Terry R. Spraker, Donald P. Knowles

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Ovine scrapie is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that may be transmitted through exposure to infected uterine and placental tissues. Susceptibility to scrapie is primarily controlled by polymorphisms in the prion protein (PrP) gene. Scrapie in the U.S. Suffolk breed and in many breeds in Europe occurs in sheep homozygous for glutamine (171QQ), but rarely in sheep heterozygous for glutamine and arginine (171QR) or homozygous for arginine (171RR) at codon 171 of the PrP gene. This study demonstrated that accumulation of PrPSc in uterine-placental epithelial cells in the placentome was determined by fetal PrP genotype and the pregnancy status of …

The Rna Binding Domain Of The Hantaan Virus N Protein Maps To A Central, Conserved Region, Colleen Jonsson, Xiaolin Xu, William Severson, Noah Villegas, Connie Schmaljohn Jan 2002

The Rna Binding Domain Of The Hantaan Virus N Protein Maps To A Central, Conserved Region, Colleen Jonsson, Xiaolin Xu, William Severson, Noah Villegas, Connie Schmaljohn

United States Army: Publications

The nucleocapsid (N) protein of hantaviruses encapsidates both viral genomic and antigenomic RNAs, although only the genomic viral RNA (vRNA) is packaged into virions. To define the domain within the Hantaan virus (HTNV) N protein that mediates these interactions, 14 N- and C-terminal deletion constructs were cloned into a bacterial expression vector, expressed, and purified to homogeneity. Each protein was examined for its ability to bind the HTNV S segment vRNA with filter binding and gel electrophoretic mobility shift assays. These studies mapped a minimal region within the HTNV N protein (amino acids 175 to 217) that bound vRNA. Sequence …

Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry Jan 2002

Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry

Journal of Family Strengths

The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) is the latest legislation in two decades of important child welfare policy in the United States. The Adoption and Safe Families Act has served to shorten the period of time that caseworkers and families have to show that families are making progress toward family preservation, with permanency decisions being made after 12 months, rather than 18. The importance of engaging and motivating families in services has therefore increased. The practice directive of ASFA can be summarized as 'Act Smart, Fast, and Accountable. " Using findings from largely correlational research, concrete recommendations …

Protecting Intrastate Threatened Species: Does The Endangered Species Act Encroach On Traditional State Authority And Exceed The Outer Limits Of The Commerce Clause, Bradford Mank Jan 2002

Protecting Intrastate Threatened Species: Does The Endangered Species Act Encroach On Traditional State Authority And Exceed The Outer Limits Of The Commerce Clause, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

After the Supreme Court decided Lopez, a number of commentators speculated about its impact on the Endangered Species Act. This Article reexamines the issue in light of Morrison and SWANCC. Part V demonstrates that, even after Lopez, Morrison, and SWANCC, the Commerce Clause reaches federal regulation of intrastate endangered or threatened species because conservation of such species has traditionally been a shared federal and state function that recognizes the legitimacy of federal regulation whenever the need for preservation is great and states have failed to address important conservation issues. Additionally, Part V shows federal regulation of endangered or threatened species …

One Year After 9/11: The Impact Of Global Terrorism On Public Health Education, Joseph K. Ogah Jan 2002

One Year After 9/11: The Impact Of Global Terrorism On Public Health Education, Joseph K. Ogah

International Journal of Global Health

As we mark one year after the September 11 (9/11) attack of the World Trade Center in New York, and the killing or traumatizing of thousands of innocent persons, global terrorism remains an issue of concern for political leaders, the business world and educators. The implications of terrorism to public health education are many and varied. At the minimum, 9/11 increased the immediate need for additional public health education to help people cope and deal with both the immediate and long-term effects of terrorist acts all over the world. Public health education plays a leading role in managing the fear …

Invisible, Underserved, And Diverse: The Health Of Women In Prison, Janette Y. Taylor, Rachel Williams, M. J. Eliason

International Journal of Global Health

In the United States of America, women are the fastest growing segment of the criminal justice system. They are entering the system with far greater physical and mental health problems than men, but with fewer health services. Additionally, within this expanding population of incarcerated women, are disproportionately represented poor women of color with serious health needs. This article: a) uses an ecosocial model to examine and critique the health and healthcare of women in prison, b) examines social structures that influence incarceration and health status, and c) proposes reconsideration of current prison health services and education.

Developmental Failure And Loss Of Reproductive Capacity As A Factor In Extinction: A Nine-Year Study Of Dedeckera Eurekensis (Polygonaceae), Delbert Wiens, Loreen Allphin, Donald H. Mansfield, Glenn Thackray Jan 2002

Developmental Failure And Loss Of Reproductive Capacity As A Factor In Extinction: A Nine-Year Study Of Dedeckera Eurekensis (Polygonaceae), Delbert Wiens, Loreen Allphin, Donald H. Mansfield, Glenn Thackray

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Many long-lived perennial species exhibit lowered reproductive capacity. Early studies of reproductive success in Dedeckera eurekensis (Polygonaceae) demonstrated that the species exhibited extremely low reproductive success, low seed/ovule (S/O) ratios (i.e., the percentage of ovules that produce filled seeds; 2.5 %), low germinability of filled seeds (3.5%), low seedling survivorship (11 .1%), and lack of recruitment in natural populations. These results were attributed to genetic load, but this elicited controversy, prompting long-term studies of the relationship between the S/O ratio and environment. After nine years of monitoring, however, the S/O ratio had not changed significantly (2 .7%), and there was …

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Investigation Of The Ground And Excited States Of Coumarins 102, 152, 153, And 343, Robert J. Cave, Edward W. Castner Jr. Jan 2002

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Investigation Of The Ground And Excited States Of Coumarins 102, 152, 153, And 343, Robert J. Cave, Edward W. Castner Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present calculations of various properties of the ground and excited electronic states of coumarins 102, 152, 153, and 343. Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we examine the excitation energies to the S1 and S2 states, the ground and excited-state dipole moments, and the lowest ionization potentials of these coumarins. In the case of C153, we locate two distinct S0 minima due to differing conformations of the julolidyl ring structure and compare properties for the syn and anti conformers. For C343, we examine the possibility of proton transfers in the ground …

11 Purple Loosestrife, B. Blossey Jan 2002

11 Purple Loosestrife, B. Blossey

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L., (Fig. 1) is a weed of natural areas and its spread across North America has degraded many prime wetlands resulting in large, monotypic stands that lack native plant species (Thompson et al., 1987; Malecki et al., 1993). Established L. salicaria populations persist for decades, are difficult to control using conventional techniques (chemical, physical, and mechanical), and continue to spread into adjacent areas (Thompson et al., 1987). Purple loosestrife has been declared a noxious weed in at least 19 states.
