Individual Variation In The Duration Of Territory Occupation By Males Of The Dragonfly Perithemis Tenera (Odonata: Libellulidae), Paul V. Switzer
Individual Variation In The Duration Of Territory Occupation By Males Of The Dragonfly Perithemis Tenera (Odonata: Libellulidae), Paul V. Switzer
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
In the dragonfly Perithemis tenera Say, males defend territories around oviposition sites and defense of a site is critical for reproductive success. This study first demonstrated that individual males varied consistently in how long they defended a particular territory within a day (their “tenure”) and in the quality of the sites they defended. I then investigated a number of factors that may have affected territory tenure and may have led to the observed variation among males. Territory occupations that ended “voluntarily” were significantly longer than those that ended because the male was evicted from his territory. For voluntary desertions, tenure …

Beyond "Pesticides And Beyond" : The Partnership Of Creative Writing And Service Learning In Engendering And Perpetuating Social Activism, Paul David Tuff
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper examines how the partnering of service learning with creative writing produces and perpetuates social activism, especially with regard to farmworkers. First, I use a personal narrative to explain how our experiences influence the way we think about--or ignore--farmworkers and their struggles. I then discuss preparations made by my classmates and I from the fall 2001 432S course, "Pesticides and Beyond: The Enduring Legacy," before placement at service learning sites. These preparations included: classroom discussions of the historical, cultural, political, and ideological foundations of farmworker struggles; analyses of how power, privilege, and prejudice oppress farmworkers in America; and research …

Bean Pod Mottle Virus: A Threat To U.S. Soybean Production, Loren J. Giesler, Said A. Ghabrial, Thomas E. Hunt, John H. Hill
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) is widespread in the major soybean-growing areas in the southern and southeastern United States. A severe outbreak of BPMV in the north central and northern Great Plains states is currently causing serious concern to soybean growers and to the soybean industry in this region (30). BPMV is efficiently transmitted in nature, within and between soybean fields, by several species of leaf-feeding beetles. The deleterious effects of BPMV infection not only reduce yield but also reduce seed quality, as seeds from infected plants may be discolored. Furthermore, BPMV predisposes soybeans to Phomopsis spp. seed infection (85), …

3-Iodo- and 6-Iodo-8-quinolinols were prepared and tested against six fungi: Aspergillus niger, A. oryzae, Myrothecium verrucaria, Trichoderma viride, Mucor cirinelloides, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes in Sabouraud dextrose broth. A comparison with the previously known 5-iodo- and 7-iodo-8-quinolinols showed that the 6-iodo isomer was the most active
Attachment Disorders And Personality Disorders : A Possible Connection, Jen Sacora
Attachment Disorders And Personality Disorders : A Possible Connection, Jen Sacora
Graduate Research Papers
Researchers now propose that attachment theory can be applied beyond childhood. They believe attachment exists in adulthood and influences adult relationships. Possible connections between personality disorders and well-known approaches to personality development such as attachment theory have been made (Brennan & Shaver, 1998).
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between parent-infant attachment which influence adult relationships and psychopathology. Theories of personality development as they relate to attachment will be explored as well as influence of early childhood experiences on personality. Finally, possible connections between attachment disorders and personality disorders will be speculated.

A Protocol For Mpa Data Collection And Comparison : Case Studies In Temperate And Tropical Oceans, Marnie Meyer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Habitat degradation and depleting fisheries are a significant problem in today's oceans. Human impacts such as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution and recreation have contributed to unhealthy marine ecosystems. These marine ecosystems are of great importance historically, biologically, and economically. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been established to protect marine biodiversity, conduct scientific research and education, promote natural and cultural resources within a certain area, and reduce user conflict among stakeholders. In this paper, seven MPAs located throughout the world in temperate and tropical oceans are researched. A template spreadsheet was created for each MPA that provides detailed information including …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Pitch Canker, Fusarium circinatum, is a disease that affects pines. Particularly of importance in California is the endemic Monterey Pine, Pinus radiata. One aspect of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between age and severity levels on pitch canker infested Monterey Pines corresponding to water stress. The other focus of the study was to see how age is affected by pitch canker, as associated by severity level. Monterey Pine survey data from 2000-2001 was collected by Asilomar State Park ecologists and used to determine pitch canker presence and water stress samples were obtained. No statistically significant …

Using Aquatic Invertebrates To Delineate Seasonal And Temporary Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North America, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson
Using Aquatic Invertebrates To Delineate Seasonal And Temporary Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North America, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Tillage can destroy or greatly disturb indicators of hydric soils and hydrophytic vegetation, making delineation of tilled wetlands difficult. The remains of aquatic invertebrates (e.g., shells, drought-resistant eggs, and trichopteran cases) are easily identifiable and persist in wetland substrates even when wetlands are dry. Additionally, these remains are not easily destroyed by mechanical tillage. To test the feasibility of using invertebrate remains to delineate wetlands, we used two methods to identify the wetland edge of ten seasonal and ten temporary wetlands, evenly divided between grassland and cropland landscapes. First, we identified the wetland edge using hydric soil and vegetation indicators …

Floristic Quality Assessment Of One Natural And Three Restored Wetland Complexities In North Dakota, Usa, David M. Mushet, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Terry L. Shaffer
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Floristic quality assessment is potentially an important tool for conservation efforts in the northern Great Plains of North America, but it has received little rigorous evaluation. Floristic quality assessments rely on coefficients assigned to each plant species of a region’s flora based on the conservatism of each species relative to others in the region. These ‘‘coefficients of conservatism’’ (C values) are assigned by a panel of experts familiar with a region’s flora. The floristic quality assessment method has faced some criticism due to the subjective nature of these assignments. To evaluate the effect of this subjectivity on floristic quality assessments, …
