The Trials Of Life: Natural Selection And Random Drift, Denis M. Walsh, Tim Lewens, André Ariew Jan 2002

The Trials Of Life: Natural Selection And Random Drift, Denis M. Walsh, Tim Lewens, André Ariew

Philosophy Faculty Publications

We distinguish dynamical and statistical interpretations of evolutionary theory. We argue that only the statistical interpretation preserves the presumed relation between natural selection and drift. On these grounds we claim that the dynamical conception of evolutionary theory as a theory of forces is mistaken. Selection and drift are not forces. Nor do selection and drift explanations appeal to the (sub‐population‐level) causes of population level change. Instead they explain by appeal to the statistical structure of populations. We briefly discuss the implications of the statistical interpretation of selection for various debates within the philosophy of biology—the ‘explananda of selection’ debate and …

Scarification Technique Affects Germination Of Stylisma Pickeringii (Patterson Bindweed ), An Illinois Endangered Plant, Henry R. Owen, Brent L. Todd, Janice M. Coons

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The seed coat of Stylistna pickeringii (Torr.) Gray var. pattersoni (Patterson bindweed), an endangered species of Illinois sand prairies, inhibits water uptake and seed germination. The purpose of this research was to find an effective and efficient way to scarify seeds of S. pickeringii to aid reintroduction into its natural habitat. Seeds were collected from sandy areas close to the Illinois River near Snicarte (Mason Co.), Illinois during the summers of 1998 and 1999. Experiments were conducted to determine the best scarification techniques (basal cut, sandpaper shakes, sulfuric acid, sand shakes and sonication). Initially, each technique was evaluated by scarifYing …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Two novel rhabdoviruses were isolated from birds during surveillance for arboviral encephalitis in the northeastern United States. The first, designated Farmington virus, is a tentative new member of the Vesiculovirus genus. The second, designated Rhode Island virus, is unclassified antigenically, but its ultrastructure and size are more similar to those of some of the plant rhabdoviruses. Both viruses infect birds and mice, as well as monkey kidney cells in culture, but their importance for human health is unknown.

Neurochemical Function In Schizophrenia: A Case Study, Ana Gomez

Capstone Research Projects

This research project addresses the topic of schizophrenia. Because of the vast amount of information available regarding schizophrenia, this paper will only focus on a few aspects of the disease. In particular the symptoms, brain abnormalities, hypotheses, and treatment strategies associated with brain abnormalities in schizophrenia will be presented. These emphases were chosen because they are of particular interest to the researcher. The intent of this paper is to discover what brain abnormalities, both physiological and chemical, are associated with schizophrenia. The intent is also to discuss treatment strategies and assess how this information may apply to a case study.

Current Trends In Urinary Tract Infections: Is Cipro Really Necessary?, Kristin Stagg Jan 2002

Current Trends In Urinary Tract Infections: Is Cipro Really Necessary?, Kristin Stagg

Capstone Research Projects

Urinary tract infections are one of the most common causes of ambulatory care visits, physician-office visits and hospitalization each year in the US. Sexual activity primarily contributes to acquisition of UTI in women; nearly half of adult women have had a UTI at least once. The most common causative agent is E. coli, followed by Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, other Gram-negative rods and Group B streptococci, depending on geographical location. 1 Until the late 1990's, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) was the most commonly prescribed and effective treatment option, but the rampant development of resistance to this drug has …

Concentrations Of Hair Minerals Determined By Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry In People With Headaches, Joel R. Mundall Jan 2002

Concentrations Of Hair Minerals Determined By Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry In People With Headaches, Joel R. Mundall

Capstone Research Projects

Calculations were made to determine what relationships exist between headaches and hair mineral levels of 1,995 hair tissue mineral analyses by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Of the 1,995 samples (1,089 females, 906 males), 163 (100 females, 63 males) were taken from patients who had been diagnosed with headaches. Above average hair levels of bismuth and the earth metals were found among the both the males and females of the headache group. An age correlation analyses showed highest headache incidence in teens and early forties. A direct correlation was also found between calcium and magnesium levels, which peaked in the late …

The Effectiveness Of A Far Lateral L5-S1 Microdiscectomy In Pain Reduction, Jamie Griffin, Scott D. Hodges, Jason Eck, S. Craig Humphreys Jan 2002

The Effectiveness Of A Far Lateral L5-S1 Microdiscectomy In Pain Reduction, Jamie Griffin, Scott D. Hodges, Jason Eck, S. Craig Humphreys

Capstone Research Projects

Diagnosis of far lateral disc herniations has become more common in recent years. This study describes the surgical procedure used for L5-S1 far lateral disc herniations, shows the benefits derived from a far lateral approach and retrospectively evaluates the outcome of the surgery. Eight patients were included in the study, five females and three males. The mean age was 62 years (range, 45-77 years). VAS pain scale, OSW index and SF-36 forms were used to evaluate the surgical outcome. Both the VAS pain scale and OSW index were improved postoperatively. The SF-36 scores were significantly lower (p<0.05) for the far lateral patients compared to both the low back pain population and the U.S. aged 55-64 year population.

Treatment Of Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Chloride Inhalation In Mice With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Versus Supplemental Oxygen, Renee Rader, Russell Rader, Daniel Wunderlich Jan 2002

Treatment Of Hydrogen Cyanide And Hydrogen Chloride Inhalation In Mice With Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Versus Supplemental Oxygen, Renee Rader, Russell Rader, Daniel Wunderlich

Capstone Research Projects

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes faster tissue healing by increasing the amount of oxygen carried to the tissues. HBO is currently used to treat carbon monoxide poisoning as well as smoke inhalation. Based on this information, it was believed that HBO would also promote faster healing for hydrogen cyanide gas or hydrogen chloride gas inhalation, which are encountered in burning material. To test this theory, mice were exposed to HCN or HCl gas. The mice were then placed in hyperbaric oxygen or supplemental oxygen treatments for five days. Weight change and overall survival rate were used to establish what method of …

From Computational Science To Internetics: Integration Of Science With Computer Science, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 2002

From Computational Science To Internetics: Integration Of Science With Computer Science, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We describe how our world dominated by Science and Scientists has been changed revolutionized by technologies moving with Internet time. Computers have always been well-used tools but in the beginning only the science counted and little credit or significance was attached to any computing activities associated with scientific research. Some 20 years ago, this started to change and the area of computational science gathered support with the NSF Supercomputer centers playing a critical role. However this vision has stalled over the last 5 years with information technology increasing in importance. The Holy Grail of computational science-- scalable parallel computing-- is …

The Impact Of Burnout On Human Physiology And On Operational Performance: A Prospective Study Of Soldiers Enrolled In The Combat Diver Qualification Course, Charles A. Morgan Iii, Tracey Cho, Gary Hazlett, Vladimir Coric, Jeff Morgan

National Security Faculty Publications

(from p. 201) "If little is known about the pathophysiology of burnout, even less is known about the actual impact of burnout on military operational performance. This is due to a lack of studies focused on military performance. Whether or not soldiers may feel symptoms of burnout is one thing - whether this state actually affects how they do their job is another. Within the current environment (reduced forces, increased training rates, increased deployment rates, extended tours) we believe that military personnel may be at significant risk for the development of burnout. Further, we wondered if there was a demonstrable …
