The Tragicomedy Of The Public Domain In Intellectual Property Law, Samuel Oddi Jan 2002

The Tragicomedy Of The Public Domain In Intellectual Property Law, Samuel Oddi

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

As the overall amount of protected and protectable subject matter expands, duration of protection grows longer, and overlap between types of protection increases, constituencies who rely upon intellectual subject matter as stimuli for the creative process grow concerned about incursions of the private domain into the public. This Article explores the relationship between the public domain as a source of sensory stimuli, the creative process as a generator of ideas, and the interaction among the public and private domains and the intellectual process - both in a "state of nature" and under the protections of an intellectual property system - …

Modeling The Effects Of Reservoir Competence Decay And Demographic Turnover In Lyme Disease Ecology, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld Jan 2002

Modeling The Effects Of Reservoir Competence Decay And Demographic Turnover In Lyme Disease Ecology, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld

Publications

Lyme disease risk is related to the abundance of infected nymphal ticks, which in turn depends on the abundance and reservoir competence of wild hosts. Reservoir competence of a host (i.e., probability that an infected host will infect a feeding vector) often declines over time after inoculation, and small mammalian reservoirs typically undergo rapid population growth during the period when vector ticks feed. These processes can affect disease risk in the context of site-specific tick abundance and host community composition. We modeled the effects of reservoir decay and host demographic turnover on Lyme disease risk using a simple yearly difference …

The Targeting Of The Attoc159 Preprotein Receptor To The Chloroplast Outer Membrane Is Mediated By Its Gtpase Domain And Is Regulated By Gtp, Matthew D. Smith, Andreas Hiltbrunner, Felix Kessler, Danny J. Schnell Jan 2002

Schnell

Biology Faculty Publications

The multimeric translocon at the outer envelope membrane of chloroplasts (Toc) initiates the recognition and import of nuclear-encoded preproteins into chloroplasts. Two Toc GTPases, Toc159 and Toc33/34, mediate preprotein recognition and regulate preprotein translocation. Although these two proteins account for the requirement of GTP hydrolysis for import, the functional significance of GTP binding and hydrolysis by either GTPase has not been defined. A recent study indicates that Toc159 is equally distributed between a soluble cytoplasmic form and a membrane-inserted form, raising the possibility that it might cycle between the cytoplasm and chloroplast as a soluble preprotein receptor. In the present …

Effects Of Elevated Substrate-Ethylene On Colonization Of Leek (Allium Porrum) By The Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus Glomus Aggregatum, R.D. Geil, Frédérique C. Guinel Jan 2002

Effects Of Elevated Substrate-Ethylene On Colonization Of Leek (Allium Porrum) By The Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus Glomus Aggregatum, R.D. Geil, Frédérique C. Guinel

Biology Faculty Publications

There are very few studies of hormonal regulation of arbuscular mycorrhiza formation that include the gaseous hormone ethylene. Ethylene is considered inhibitory to the formation of arbuscular mycorrhizae; however, very low concentrations may promote their formation. We used an improved method of exogenous ethylene application to determine whether ethylene concentration dependent changes in colonization occur in the leek (Allium porrum L. cv. Giant Musselburgh) – Glomus aggregatum Schenck & Smith emend. Koske system. This improved method allowed for a continuous flow of constant concentration of the gas to be applied to a substrate. The 0.6 μL/L substrate–ethylene treatment reduced …

Glutamine Uptake By Neurons: Interaction Of Protons With System A Transporters, Farrukh A. Chaudhry, Dietmar Schmitz, Richard J. Reimer, Peter Larsson, Andrew T. Gray, Roger Nicoll, Michael Kavanaugh, Robert H. Edwards Jan 2002

Glutamine Uptake By Neurons: Interaction Of Protons With System A Transporters, Farrukh A. Chaudhry, Dietmar Schmitz, Richard J. Reimer, Peter Larsson, Andrew T. Gray, Roger Nicoll, Michael Kavanaugh, Robert H. Edwards

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Astrocytes provide the glutamine required by neurons to synthesize glutamate and GABA. However, the mechanisms involved in glutamine transfer from glia to neurons have remained poorly understood. Recent work has implicated the System N transporter SN1 in the efflux of glutamine from astrocytes and the very closely related System A transporters SA1 and SA2 in glutamine uptake by neurons. To understand how these closely related proteins mediate flux in different directions, we have examined their ionic coupling. In contrast to the electroneutral exchange of H+ for Na+ and neutral amino acid catalyzed by SN1, we now show that …

Dynamic Equilibrium Between Coupled And Uncoupled Modes Of A Neuronal Glutamate Transporter, Lars Borre, Michael Kavanaugh, Baruch I. Kanner Jan 2002

Dynamic Equilibrium Between Coupled And Uncoupled Modes Of A Neuronal Glutamate Transporter, Lars Borre, Michael Kavanaugh, Baruch I. Kanner

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

In the brain, the neurotransmitter glutamate is removed from the synaptic cleft by (Na+ + K+)-coupled transporters by an electrogenic process. Moreover, these transporters mediate a sodium- and glutamate-dependent uncoupled chloride conductance. In contrast to the wild type, the uptake of radiolabeled substrate by the I421C mutant is inhibited by the membrane-impermeant [2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl]methanethiosulfonate and also by other sulfhydryl reagents. In the wild-type and the unmodified mutant, substrate-induced currents are inwardly rectifying and reflect the sum of the coupled electrogenic flux and the anion conductance. Remarkably, the I421C mutant modified by sulfhydryl reagents exhibits currents that are non-rectifying …

Property Rights And The Management Of Multiple Use Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle Jan 2002

Property Rights And The Management Of Multiple Use Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Arguments in favor of adopting rights-based management strategies have been developed primarily in the context of commercial fisheries and have focused on increasing the profitability of catcher vessel operations and reducing the incentive to deplete fish stocks. Relatively little attention has been given to the effects that alternative management regimes could have on the profitability of processing and support service businesses, consumer surplus, or to the interface between commercial fishing, sport fishing, and other use and nonuse demands for fishery resources. Although there is often congruence among users with respect to stock management and rule enforcement objectives, other objectives are …
