Determining The Genetic Distances Between Sub-Populations Of Aneides Aeneus In The Westvāco Wildlife And Ecological Research Forest, Andrew Nicholas Johnson Jan 2002

Determining The Genetic Distances Between Sub-Populations Of Aneides Aeneus In The Westvāco Wildlife And Ecological Research Forest, Andrew Nicholas Johnson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Aneides aeneus, the Green Salamander, is a plethodontid species ranging from southern Pennsylvania to central Alabama and from eastern Mississippi to Maryland. Populations of Green Salamanders most often inhabit cliffs and rocky outcrops which are moist but not wet and shaded. The animal is listed as a species of special concern by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Diversity Program. Genetic and reproductive isolation due to strict habitat preferences of the Green Salamander could be a factor in the decline of the species. Seventeen tissue samples were retrieved from five sites within the Westvāco Wildlife and Ecosystem …

A New Megalonychid Sloth From The Late Wisconsinan Of The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Rega, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson Jan 2002

A New Megalonychid Sloth From The Late Wisconsinan Of The Dominican Republic, Elizabeth Rega, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Keith Christenson

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

An unusually well preserved skull, mandible, and indisputably associated post-cranial elements of new sloth, Acratocnus (Miocnus), were recovered from a cave in Jaragua National Park, Dominican Republic. The animal died lying in a rimstone pool and was rapidly coated with a thin calcite patina. We have documented a late Wisconsinan age for this specimen by inorganic 14C radiometric dating of the patina, with supporting data on the carbon systematics of the speleothems in this cave. This sloth is described as a new species on the basis of the distinctive morphology and relative size of cranial and mandibular features. We consider …

A Middle Pleistocene Age And Biogeography For The Extinct Rodent Megalomys Curazensis From Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The extinct oryzomyine rodent Megalomys curazensis has been known from abundant but fragmentary remains on the island of Curaçao since 1959. Here we demonstrate an age of 130 000 to 400 000 years before present based on geomorphological context, and propose a biogeographical model for the genus.

A Late Quaternary Paleoecological Record From Caves Of Southern Jamaica, West Indies, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, A.G. Fincham Jan 2002

A Late Quaternary Paleoecological Record From Caves Of Southern Jamaica, West Indies, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, A.G. Fincham

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Studies of an unusual and diverse system of caves in coastal southern Jamaica have yielded a paleoclimatic record associated with a fossil vertebrate record that provides useful insights into the poorly documented paleoecology of latest Wisconsinan and Holocene Jamaica. Episodes of significantly increased precipitation during the Holocene have left characteristic deposits of speleothems, and have supported both faunal and archaeological communities that were dependent on these mesic conditions. Deposits of fossil bat guano preserved in the caves provide a δ¹³C record of alternating mesic and xeric climatic episodes that supports the interpretation of the faunal and archaeological record.

“The Chinese Believe In Spirits”: Belief And Believing In The Study Of Religion, Catherine M. Bell Jan 2002

“The Chinese Believe In Spirits”: Belief And Believing In The Study Of Religion, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

A recent round of books, both popular and scholarly, reveal that as a society we are, once again, fascinated with the issue of belief. While the more popular books tend to adopt a fairly straightforward and uncomplicated notion of believing and then find major problems of rationality, the more scholarly books readily accept a type of rationality to beliefs while problematizing the act of believing in other, more involuted ways. Both types of argument remind the scholar of religion that the academic discipline of religious studies has not contributed much to this discussion for quite a while. As described in …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Ryan J. Lewis Jan 2002

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Ryan J. Lewis

Graduate Research Papers

Quality administrative leadership is a major component of the successful education of our future. Leaders have the responsibility to identify trends and patterns to plan for the future. "With these demographic changes inevitably come cultural changes that we must confront and accommodate" (James, 1997, p. 22). The traditional methods of instruction and leadership no longer meet the needs society has placed upon the educational system. There are three questions that leaders must be able to answer: (a) What is in our future?, (b) What skills will we need?, (c) What do we need to get there? These three questions allow …

Propagation And Culture Of Mussel Species Of Concern Annual Report For 2002, M. Christopher Barnhart

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

This report describes the second year of a 3-year project. The project objectives are to 1) augment existing populations and to establish new populations of mussel species of concern, 2) use molecular markers to permit genetic identification of the parentage and cohort of recovered juvenile mussels, and 3) test the susceptibility of juvenile mussels to predation by benthic invertebrates and to water quality factors such as low oxygen. The work is a cooperative effort among several agencies, including the Missouri Department of Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Southwest Missouri State University. In 2002, this cooperative effort resulted in …

Ncs-1 Inhibits Insulin-Stimulated Glut4 Translocation In 3t3l1 Adipocytes Through A Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase-Dependent Pathway, Silvia Mora, Paul L. Durham, Jeffery R. Smith, Andrew F. Russo, Andreas Jeromin, Jefferey E. Pessin Jan 2002

Ncs-1 Inhibits Insulin-Stimulated Glut4 Translocation In 3t3l1 Adipocytes Through A Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase-Dependent Pathway, Silvia Mora, Paul L. Durham, Jeffery R. Smith, Andrew F. Russo, Andreas Jeromin, Jefferey E. Pessin

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Expression of NCS-1 (neuronal calcium sensor-1, also termed frequenin) in 3T3L1 adipocytes strongly inhibited insulin-stimulated translocation of GLUT4 and insulin-responsive aminopeptidase. The effect of NCS-1 was specific for GLUT4 and the insulin-responsive aminopeptidase translocation as there was no effect on the trafficking of the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor or the GLUT1 glucose transporter isoform. Moreover, NCS-1 showed partial colocalization with GLUT4-EGFP in the perinuclear region. The inhibitory action of NCS-1 was independent of calcium sequestration since neither treatment with ionomycin nor endothelin-1, both of which elevated the intracellular calcium concentration, restored insulin-stimulated GLUT4 translocation. Furthermore, NCS-1 did not alter the …

Thinking The Body: Sexual Difference In Philosophy An Examination Of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’S Account Of Embodiment In Phenomenology Of Perception, Jillian Canode Jan 2002

Thinking The Body: Sexual Difference In Philosophy An Examination Of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’S Account Of Embodiment In Phenomenology Of Perception, Jillian Canode

McNair Scholars Journal

Western Philosophy, for a very long time, concerned itself with the task of separating mind and body, reason and emotion, and thus men and women. As a result of women’s disallowance to participate in philosophy, philosophy remained a faculty of the mind and women were relegated to the home. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, a 20th century French philosopher, brought philosophy back to the body with Phenomenology of Perception. In this text Merleau-Ponty offers a universal account of how humans experience embodiment. This paper examines not only Merleau-Ponty’s neglect, but also philosophy’s neglect of the female body: Merleau-Ponty assumes that the male …

Soybean Glutaredoxin Gene Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil Ii, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic Jan 2002

Soybean Glutaredoxin Gene Responds To Aluminum Toxicity In Soil Ii, Kisha D. Thomas-Bostic

McNair Scholars Journal

Oxidizing agents are a normal product of aerobic metabolism and may also be encountered from environmental sources. Aluminum is one proposed source of environmental oxidative stress in plants, and is a major component of soils and an inhibitor of plant growth. Plant cells have evolved universal mechanisms to mediate oxidative stress including the enzyme glutaredoxin, which utilizes a disulfide oxidation-reduction mechanism to detoxify free radicals. A preliminary study suggested that the soybean glutaredoxin gene is expressed preferentially in roots and stems of soybean seedlings in response to toxic levels of Al in soils. To expand our understanding of our initial …
