Thin Laser Light Sheet Microscope For Microbial Oceanography, Eran Fuchs, Jules S. Jaffe, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam
Thin Laser Light Sheet Microscope For Microbial Oceanography, Eran Fuchs, Jules S. Jaffe, Richard A. Long, Farooq Azam
Faculty Publications
Despite a growing need, oceanographers are limited by existing technological constrains and are unable to observe aquatic microbes in their natural setting. In order to provide a simple and easy to implement solution for such studies, a new Thin Light Sheet Microscope (TLSM) has been developed. The TLSM utilizes a well-defined sheet of laser light, which has a narrow (23 micron) axial dimension over a 1 mm x 1 mm field of view. This light sheet is positioned precisely within the depth of field of the microscope’s objective lens. The technique thus utilizes conventional microscope optics but replaces the illumination …

Global Expression Profiling Of Acetate-Grown Escherichia Coli, Min-Kyu Oh, Lars Rohlin, Katy Kao, James Liao
Global Expression Profiling Of Acetate-Grown Escherichia Coli, Min-Kyu Oh, Lars Rohlin, Katy Kao, James Liao
Faculty Publications
This study characterized the transcript profile of Escherichia coli in acetate cultures using DNA microarray on glass slides. Glucose-grown cultures were used as a reference. At the 95% confidence level, 354 genes were up-regulated in acetate, while 370 genes were down-regulated compared with the glucose-grown culture. Generally, more metabolic genes were up-regulated in acetate than other gene groups, while genes involved in cell replication, transcription, and translation machinery tended to be down-regulated. It appears that E. coli commits more resources to metabolism at the expense of growth when cultured in the poor carbon source. The expression profile confirms many known …

From Diagnosis To Payment: The Dynamics Of Coding Systems For Hospital, Physician, And Other Health Services, Karen Matherlee
From Diagnosis To Payment: The Dynamics Of Coding Systems For Hospital, Physician, And Other Health Services, Karen Matherlee
National Health Policy Forum
This background paper reviews the two principal coding systems used to describe health services in the United States: ICD-9-CM and HCPCS, a combination of CPT-4 and national and local codes. It probes the relationships of these coding systems to payment policy, administrative simplification under HIPAA, and other concerns. The paper also addresses four coding issues: governance of CPT; adoption of ICD-10-CM; the appropriateness, accuracy, and responsiveness to change of the codes themselves; and the degree of documentation needed to monitor health services and determine payment.

A Survey For American Burying Beetles In Southwest Missouri, M. Christopher Barnhart, Robert Brown
A Survey For American Burying Beetles In Southwest Missouri, M. Christopher Barnhart, Robert Brown
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Carrion beetles (Family Silphidae) were surveyed at 25 sites in southwestern Missouri during June and July of 2001. At each site, 4-12 pitfall traps baited with carrion were open for 24 nights. Total effort was 538 trap-nights, with average effort equal to 21.5 trap-nights per site. Seven species of silphids were recovered, including Nicrophorus marginatus, Nicrophorus orbicollis, Nicrophorus tomentosus, Oiceoptoma inaequale, Oiceoptoma novaboracense, Necrophila americana, and Necrodes surinamensis. Average species number per site was 3.82 (range 0-7). Average trapping success of all silphids at sites was 2.84 individuals per trap-night (range 0-12.5). The most abundant and widespread species were Necrophila …
