A Real Time Frequency Analysis Of The Electroencephalogram Using Labview, Rupal Patel Jan 2002

A Real Time Frequency Analysis Of The Electroencephalogram Using Labview, Rupal Patel

Theses

The use of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) for diagnosis of brain related diseases is becoming a popular technique in the clinical and research environment. To achieve accurate reading of EEG, signal representation and classification becomes extremely important. The goal of this project was to develop a basic software program for acquiring and online processing of the electrical activity recorded from the brain. A program was developed using the LabVIEW programming software by National Instruments. Basic hardware components recorded the EEG signal and a software component divided the data into delta, theta, alpha and beta bands in the frequency domain. Emphasis was …

An Infrared Device To Measure The Eyeblink For The Study Of Classical Conditioning, Alka Patel Jan 2002

An Infrared Device To Measure The Eyeblink For The Study Of Classical Conditioning, Alka Patel

Theses

The classically conditioned eyeblink response is studied by various groups to study neurological functions. This is a form of associative leaming that has many features to help diagnose and learn about neurological diseases. Electromyogram traditionally is used to detect eyeblinks for this experimentation in human. However, EMG can be expensive and difficult to use. It involves the utilization of electrodes and produces only an indirect measure of eyelid closure. The goal of the project was to develop an infrared device to detect eyeblinks and replace the EMG. The project involved two major components, a hardware and a software component. The …

Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Comfa) Of Protonated Methylphenidate Phenyl-Substituted Analogs, Kathleen Mary Gilbert Jan 2002

Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Comfa) Of Protonated Methylphenidate Phenyl-Substituted Analogs, Kathleen Mary Gilbert

Theses

Protonated methylphenidate (pMP) and several phenyl-substituted pMP analogs were analyzed using Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA) to develop a pharmacophore for dopamine transporter (DAT) binding. This research is a part of an interdisciplinary study on using methylphenidate (MP) analogs to block the binding of cocaine to the DAT as a treatment for addiction.

A random search conformational analysis using key pMP torsional angles was performed to create conformer families representing possible bioactive conformations. The lowest energy pMP conformer of each family was used as a template to create phenyl-substituted pMP analogs.

Partial least squares analysis was used to determine the …

Short-Term Community Based Dune Management Activities On A Highly Developed Coast In New Jersey, Stacy Mccormack Jan 2002

Short-Term Community Based Dune Management Activities On A Highly Developed Coast In New Jersey, Stacy Mccormack

Theses

Recently, local governments have started to realize the effectiveness of dune building as a form of hazard mitigation and have engineered dunes for this purpose. This study evaluates dune management at the local level; specifically, short term management practices, physical constraints, dune management participants, and sources of guidance. A review of municipal regulations, topographic surveys, and interviews with local officials were conducted in four New Jersey communities: Belmar, Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Manasquan. The results of this study indicate that dunes were established as part of local hazard mitigation planning in response to the 1992 storm, and topographic surveys …

A Tool For Phylogenetic Data Cleaning And Searching, Viswanath Neelavalli Jan 2002

A Tool For Phylogenetic Data Cleaning And Searching, Viswanath Neelavalli

Theses

Data collection and cleaning is a very important part of an elaborate Data Mining System. 'TreeBASE' is a relational database of phylogenetic information at the Harvard University with a keyword based searching interface. 'TreeSearch' is a Structure based search engine implemented at NJIT that can be used for searching phylogenetic data. Phylogenetic trees are extracted from the flat-file database at Harvard University, available at {ftp://herbaria.harvard.edu/pub/piel/Data/files/}. There is huge amount of information present in the files about the trees and the data matrices from which the trees are generated. The search tool implemented at NJIT is interested in using the string …

Simulation And Close-To-Optimal Algorithm For The Static Load Balancing Of A Network Of Heterogeneous Processors, Mark G. Steiner Jan 2002

Simulation And Close-To-Optimal Algorithm For The Static Load Balancing Of A Network Of Heterogeneous Processors, Mark G. Steiner

Theses

A close-to-optimal linear programming-based algorithm for the static load balancing of a network of heterogeneous processors is described and implemented. Experimental results suggest that the amount of time required by the implementation of the algorithm to balance the loads of the servers as a function of the number of servers has polynomial complexity.

Child Sexual Abuse, Eugenia Hsu, Georganna Sedlar, Mary Fran Flood, David J. Hansen Jan 2002

Child Sexual Abuse, Eugenia Hsu, Georganna Sedlar, Mary Fran Flood, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter describes the case of two adolescent girls who were living in foster care with their maternal aunt and her family, the Kraller family. The girls and their aunt and uncle participated in Project SAFE, a university-based program for sexually abused children and their nonoffending caregivers, which is described in detail in the Course of Treatment section. The Kraller family was referred to Project SAFE by the local Child Advocacy Center. Miriam Kraller contacted the Child Advocacy Center when she learned that her two nieces (her younger sister’s daughters), Gina (age 14) and Suzy (age 13), had been sexually …

Potent Enantioselective Auxin: Indole-3-Succinic Acid, Daniel W. Armstrong, Yan Song Liu, Lingfeng He, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Charles L. Barnes, Charles F. Hammer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low levels of synthetic auxins are used as root growth promoters for a wide variety of botanicals. When properly used, they can produce earlier and more prolific root growth. Indole-3-succinic acid (ISA) is a chiral compound that can be synthesized as a racemate. Its enantiomers were resolved by both chromatography and diastereomeric crystallization. The absolute configuration of each enantiomer was determined by X-ray crystallography and then tested for auxin activity. The relative effectiveness of the ISA enantiomers was determined and compared to the achiral synthetic auxin indole-3-butyric acid and to the natural auxin indole-3-acetic acid.

Method And Apparatus For Decoupled Thermo-Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Nazim Muradov, Eric Martin, Ali Raissi Jan 2002

Method And Apparatus For Decoupled Thermo-Photocatalytic Pollution Control, Nazim Muradov, Eric Martin, Ali Raissi

UCF Patents

A new method for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to photo-thermocatalytic reactor design and scale-up. At low irradiance levels, the method is based on the implementation of low pressure drop biopolymeric and synthetic polymeric support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap media. At high irradiance levels, the method utilizes multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media within a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.

The Student Technology Assistants (Sta) Program: A Progress Report, Aziza Ellozy

Faculty Journal Articles

The Center has hired graduate students and has trained them (with the collaboration of Academic Computing Services), to assist interested faculty members in preparing instructional materials and/or using WebCT (the course management system adopted by AUC). This has involved assisting faculty members, on a one-on-one basis, “at their own pace and on their own schedules”, on how to use and develop these tools in and out of the classroom. In other words, our STAs have made the equivalent of “house calls” to our faculty.
