High-Tech Industrial Activity In Greater Cleveland 1992-2000, Robert Sadowski Feb 2002

High-Tech Industrial Activity In Greater Cleveland 1992-2000, Robert Sadowski

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This briefing paper provides an analysis of high-tech activity in the Cleveland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) from 1992 to 2000. It begins by defining the term high-tech industry, using criteria developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). High-tech industries are then analyzed from the viewpoint of employment levels, average earnings, and number of establishments. The City of Cleveland’s share of high-tech activity is discussed along with a comparison of the Cleveland PMSA versus the U.S. The paper concludes with a summary analysis of Cleveland’s position n in the world of high-tech.

Neurospora Clock-Controlled Gene 9 (Ccg-9) Encodes Trehalose Synthase: Circadian Regulation Of Stress Responses And Development, Mari L. Shinohara, Alejandro Correa, Deborah Bell-Pedersen, Jay C. Dunlap, Jennifer J. Loros Feb 2002

Neurospora Clock-Controlled Gene 9 (Ccg-9) Encodes Trehalose Synthase: Circadian Regulation Of Stress Responses And Development, Mari L. Shinohara, Alejandro Correa, Deborah Bell-Pedersen, Jay C. Dunlap, Jennifer J. Loros

Dartmouth Scholarship

The circadian clock of Neurospora crassa regulates the rhythmic expression of a number of genes encoding diverse functions which, as an ensemble, are adaptive to life in a rhythmic environment of alternating levels of light and dark, warmth and coolness, and dryness and humidity. Previous differential screens have identified a number of such genes based solely on their cycling expression, including clock-controlled gene 9 (ccg-9). Sequence analysis now shows the predicted CCG-9 polypeptide to be homologous to a novel form of trehalose synthase; as such it would catalyze the synthesis of the disaccharide trehalose, which plays an important …

Iron, Folate And Vitamin B12 Status Of Apparently Healthy Irish Adult Women Attending General Practitioners In Inner-City Dublin, Helen R. Casey Feb 2002

Iron, Folate And Vitamin B12 Status Of Apparently Healthy Irish Adult Women Attending General Practitioners In Inner-City Dublin, Helen R. Casey

Doctoral

There is substantial related morbidity and mortality among men and women in developed countries. Certain events during the course of a woman’s life such as menstruation, pregnancy, lactation and the menopause may compromise haematinic nutrient status. The purpose of this study was to investigate iron, folate and vitamin B12 status among a sample of apparently healthy, non-pregnant Irish adult women attending general practitioners in inner-city Dublin. Dietary, socio-economic, medical and lifestyle factors contributing to status of these haematinic nutrients were extensively examined. The initial part of the work validated the methods in a representative sample of inner city Dublin women …

Acrolein Modifies And Inhibits Cytosolic Aspartate Aminotransferase, James Southwell, George Yeargans, Catherine Kowalewski, Norbert W. Seidler Feb 2002

Acrolein Modifies And Inhibits Cytosolic Aspartate Aminotransferase, James Southwell, George Yeargans, Catherine Kowalewski, Norbert W. Seidler

Faculty and Staff Publications

Acrolein is a reactive lipid peroxidation byproduct, which is found in ischemic tissue. We examined the effects of acrolein on cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase (cAAT), which is an enzyme that was previously shown to be inhibited by glycating agents. cAAT is thought to protect against ischemic injury. We observed that acrolein cross-linked cAAT subunits as evidenced by the presence of high molecular weight bands following SDS-PAGE. Acrolein-modified cAAT resisted thermal denaturation when compared with native cAAT. We also observed a decrease in intrinsic fluorescence (290 nm, ex; 380 nm, em). These observations are consistent with an acrolein-induced change in conformation that …

Simultaneous Removal Of Ortho-Dichlorobenzene And Ethanol Vapors In A Biotrickling Filter : Experimental Results And Process Modeling, Suchismita Bhattacharya Jan 2002

Simultaneous Removal Of Ortho-Dichlorobenzene And Ethanol Vapors In A Biotrickling Filter : Experimental Results And Process Modeling, Suchismita Bhattacharya

Dissertations

This study investigated the possibility of simultaneous removal of vapors of dissimilar volatile organic compounds from air streams in a biotrickling filter (BTF). Using a rricrobial consortium known to utilize ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) as sole carbon and energy source, a culture was developed on o-DCB/ethanol mixtures and a BTF unit was developed and operated with air streams carrying o-DCB and ethanol vapors. Simultaneous removal of the two compounds was observed in experiments that span a period of over three years.

Experiments were performed at air residence times ranging from 4 to 6.5 min, liquid flow rates from 3.6 to 9 Lh …

Impact Of The Wasting Disease Pathogen, Labryrinthula On The Photobiology Of Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Peter J. Ralph, Frederick T. Short

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Labyrinthula zosterae is clearly shown to be a primary pathogen of eelgrass Zostera marina L., not merely a secondary infection of senescent leaves or an indication of decomposition. The results of this investigation using a Diving-PAM fluorometer indicate that the regions of tissue photosynthetically compromised by Labyrinthula are substantially larger than previously thought. Labyrinthula moves through Zostera marina tissue at a rate of up to 0.8 mm h–1 during daylight periods. The photosynthetic efficiency of apparently healthy green leaf tissue can be reduced by almost 50% in areas up to 3 mm from a necrotic region infected with Labyrinthula. Once …
