Hotelling's T2 Vs. The Rank Transform With Real Likert Data, Michael J. Nanna
Hotelling's T2 Vs. The Rank Transform With Real Likert Data, Michael J. Nanna
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Monte Carlo research has demonstrated that there are many applications of the rank transformation that result in an invalid procedure. Examples include the two dependent samples, the factorial analysis of variance, and the factorial analysis of covariance layouts. However, the rank transformation has been shown to be a valid and powerful test in the two independent samples layout. This study demonstrates that the rank transformation is also a robust and powerful alternative to the Hotellings T2 test when the data are on a Likert scale.

Ecology Of The Missouri River. Progress Report, Dingell-Johnson Project F-75-R-19, Supplement 1- Missouri River Creel Survey, Camp Creek To Kansas State Line, 31 March Through 12 October 2001, Gerald Mestl
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
This report describes Missouri River activities and results related to a channelized Missouri River creel survey conducted from 31 March through 12 October 2001. This is the second of a planned annual creel survey to be conducted on alternating sections of the channelized Missouri River to measure changes in recreational fishing activity, especially those changes due to large scale habitat restoration efforts. Future reports will contain additional analyses of these data. Anglers spent over 22,000 hours fishing the Missouri River from Camp Creek (rkm 883.5) to the Kansas state line (rkm 790.2) during the survey period. Effort peaked during the …
The Lacustrine Carbon Cycle As Illuminated By The Waters And Sediments Of Two Hydrologically Distinct Headwater Lakes In North-Central Minnesota, U.S.A., Walter E. Dean, Antje Schwalb
The Lacustrine Carbon Cycle As Illuminated By The Waters And Sediments Of Two Hydrologically Distinct Headwater Lakes In North-Central Minnesota, U.S.A., Walter E. Dean, Antje Schwalb
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The accumulation rates of CaCO3 and organic carbon (OC) in lake sediments are delicately balanced between production in the epilimnion and destruction in the hypolimnion. The cycling of these two forms of carbon makes a ‘‘carbon pump’’ that greatly affects the biogeochemical cycles of other elements. To further understand these biogeochemical dynamics, the lakes, streams, and wetlands of the Shingobee River headwater area of north-central Minnesota have been subjected to intensive hydrologic and biogeochemical studies. Williams Lake, situated close to the highest point in the regional flow system, is hydrologically closed, with no surface inlet or outlet, and ground …

What Matters Most: Evidence-Based Findings Of Key Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences And Outcomes For Girls And Boys Throughout Their Primary And Secondary Schooling, Ken Rowe, Kathy Rowe
Student learning processes
Much of the prevailing public interest and media 'hype' surrounding gender issues in education - especially differences in boys' and girls' experiences and outcomes of schooling - amount to little more than anecdotal rhetoric and opinion. In this expanded, supplementary submission to the Inquiry Into the Education of Boys, key findings are presented highlighting 'real' effects from recent and emerging evidence-based research on teacher and school effectiveness. For example, whereas on average, boys' literacy skills, general academic achievements, attitudes, behaviours and experiences of schooling are notably poorer than those of girls - despite their socioeconomic and sociocultural backgrounds - these …

The Trademark Of A Trend Setter: An Interview With Czech Feminist Writer And Environmentalist Eva Hauserová, Madelaine Hron, Eva Hauserová
Journal of International Women's Studies
I had long known of Eva Hauserová – major Czech feminist writer and founding figure of the Gender Studies Center in Prague. I met her personally for the first time at party she gave in Prague in spring 2001, certainly one of the most delightful get-togethers I enjoyed while I was there: it was a “kiddie” party, and we (a number of well-known writers and scholars) were to dress up like kids, eat snacks and play children’s games. I was immediately enchanted by Eva’s wit, her artistic and literary talent, as well as her lucid understanding of Czech politics and …

The essays by Martha Nussbaum and Ian Hacking both raise important issues about the some of the central themes of The Mismeasure of Desire and it is a pleasure and an honor to have such careful, significant and interdisciplinary thinkers engage my ideas. In this brief reply, I address some of their challenges.
Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi
Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Environmental exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) has been of concern because of its potential contribution to the increased prevalence of acute and chronic airway diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of thiol changes (due to DEP exposure) in immune responses. Rats were exposed to OVA, DEP, or both by intratracheal instillation (IT) and/or inhalation. IT-DEP exposure significantly increased the inflammatory parameters and thiol levels in both Sprague-Dawley and Brown Norway rats. Exposure to DEP and/or OVA resulted in significant increases in neutrophils, LDH, total protein, and albumin content in lavage fluid. Alveolar macrophage (AM) …
Role Of Protein Kinase C Isoforms In Human Breast Tumor Cell Survival, Meredith Ann Mccracken
Role Of Protein Kinase C Isoforms In Human Breast Tumor Cell Survival, Meredith Ann Mccracken
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/threonine kinases composed of 12 unique isoforms that function in a variety of cellular processes including proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and carcinogenesis. The contribution of individual PKC isoforms to these processes is largely unexplored. The purpose of this study is to identify specific PKC isoforms that promote breast tumor cell survival following radiation treatment. This work demonstrated that depletion of PKC delta and PKC zeta isoforms from MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 human breast tumor cells by antisense oligonucleotides significantly impaired survival following radiation insult. Antisense oligonucleotides were shown to be effective and selective inhibitors …
Perceptions Of Moral Agency Among Some Preschool Special Needs Teachers, Stephen Keith Pavlovic
Perceptions Of Moral Agency Among Some Preschool Special Needs Teachers, Stephen Keith Pavlovic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For more than 30 years, research on moral development has been dominated by the work of Lawrence Kohlberg and James Rest who have sought to construct and validate a universal model of moral development. The administration of either the Moral Judgment Inventory (MJI) or the Defining Issues Test (DIT) has been the primary, and frequently the only, methodology used to examine the moral reasoning abilities of various professions. Based on these tests, teachers have shown a disturbingly low level of moral reasoning. Using Rest's Four Component Model of moral deliberation, the study was designed to test the hypothesis that teachers' …
Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen
Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Modern interdisciplinary research in statistical science encompasses a wide field: agriculture, biology, biomedical sciences along with bioinformatics, clinical sciences, education, environmental and public health disciplines, genomic science, industry, molecular genetics, socio-behavior, socio-economics, toxicology, and a variety of other disciplines. Statistical science has historically had mathematical perspectives dominating theoretical and methodological developments. Yet, the advent of modern information technology has opened the doors for highly computation intensive statistical tools (i.e., software), wherein mathematical aspects are often de-emphasized. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) is now becoming a dominating force, with bioinformatics as a notable example. In view of this apparent discordance …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone
Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Data collected over an 11 year period were analyzed for behavioral constancy, reaction to environmental change, and the differential influence of environment and genetics in a group of captive chimpanzees using the framework of the Five Factor Model of Personality. Results suggested environment was a more influential factor in behavioral production, although expected reactions of specific individuals were not evidenced. Improvements upon this research include use of a more chimpanzee-specific personality model and more detailed data collection to support more precise conclusions regarding behavioral etiology.

The Effects Of Host Species And Substratum Factors On The Abundance And Growth Of Epiphytic Orchids, May 2002, Anna Keller
The Effects Of Host Species And Substratum Factors On The Abundance And Growth Of Epiphytic Orchids, May 2002, Anna Keller
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
It has been observed that epiphytic orchids are less abundant on trees of the genus Quercus (Fagaceae) than on other Neotropical hosts. This study investigates this claim and attempts to link that pattern to substrate inhospitability. The results of orchid abundance counts on Quercus and non-Quercus hosts yielded statistically non-significant results, although the data appear to support this apparent distribution. Specklinia aristata were placed in six experimental treatments in order to examine the effects of pH, fissure depth, and water-holding capacity of the substrate on orchid growth. The results of these experiments also yielded no statistically significant differences between orchid …
Function And Size Optimization In Mucuna Urens Vexillum, May 2002, Mark Macedo
Function And Size Optimization In Mucuna Urens Vexillum, May 2002, Mark Macedo
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
This study examines the role of the vexillum as an aural nectar guide in the species Mucuna urens. Field manipulations show that the vexillum of M. urens enhances visitation and pollen removal (X2 = 52.8, p<.001). Subsequent observational studies conducted on bat visited hummingbird feeders support this finding as well (X2 = 10.67, p< .005). Data also show an increase in vexillum size correlated with number of bats visits (X2 = 32.06, p < .001). Two explanations are offered for why M. urens and other bat pollinated flowers in the genus have not developed as large a vexillum as possible. Investment return optimization is one possible explanation. Niche partitioning of potential pollinators is another.

Parents' And Teachers' Acceptability Of Treatments For Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: The Effects Of Presentation And Information Delivery, Jason Donald Gage
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed problems affecting school-age children. This disorder can cause significant problems for children who consequently need treatment. Consumers of interventions for ADHD have efficacious treatments to choose from, but such treatment may not be implemented appropriately and effectiveness may decrease. Viewing treatments as 111 acceptable can affect treatment integrity and in turn increase effectiveness. Therefore, it is important that professionals understand how to increase the acceptability of treatments when first presenting treatment options to consumers. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if presenting parents and teachers with additional …

Binge Eating Disorder And Its Relationship To Bulimia Nervosa And Obesity, Lara Schultz Lacaille
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Recent research indicates that 2% to 4% of the population meet diagnostic criteria for the newly proposed binge eating disorder, and that it is much more common (30%) among the treatment-seeking obese. Although recognized as a significant problem, binge eating disorder is l1l not well understood, and there is debate about whether binge eating disorder is a distinct disorder. It has been argued that binge eating disorder is simply a variant or milder form of bulimia nervosa and not a separate and distinct disorder. Researchers have begun to study this population in greater depth in order to assess the characteristics …
