The Relationship Between Foreign Language Ability And Achievement In Other School Subjects, Samantha J. Chabotar May 2002

The Relationship Between Foreign Language Ability And Achievement In Other School Subjects, Samantha J. Chabotar

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the ability to learn a foreign language and abilities in other school subjects at the high school level. The sample included 134 tenth grade students recruited through their English classes. Foreign language ability was measured by an Artificial Language test. Students completed a one-page questionnaire about their experience and exposure to foreign languages. Then they were given a set of new vocabulary and grammar rules. They were asked to translate phrases and complete fill-in-the-blank questions, utilizing the new grammar rules. These test scores were then correlated with various sub-sections …

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau May 2002

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians' “place” in the context of the Majority Culture has never been clear to either them or their non-Indian counterparts. Many authors of cross-cultural literature suggest the experience of “living with one foot in two canoes” is stressful, confusing, and can even lead to reduced life success and increased psychopathology. This study attempted to develop a factor-analytically devised inventory intended to aid in identification of bicultural identification in hopes it may contribute to greater understanding between cultural orientation and healthy or maladaptive American Indians' functioning.

One hundred and ninety-eight American Indian and Caucasian students and community members from four …

Attitudes And Beliefs About Obesity Among School Professionals Working With Adolescents, Kelli L. Jelsing May 2002

Attitudes And Beliefs About Obesity Among School Professionals Working With Adolescents, Kelli L. Jelsing

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the attitudes and beliefs about obesity held by school professionals working with adolescents in a primarily rural, Midwestern region of the United States. The concern is that school professionals most likely to interact with adolescents regarding obesity may hold negative attitudes and beliefs about obesity, thus creating a negative environment for obese adolescents. This study partially replicated an urban-based study by utilizing sections of the questionnaire related to attitudes and beliefs about obesity. Fifty-eight science, health, home economics, and physical education teachers, and school nurses, social workers, and counselors working with adolescents …

The Ecology Of Lianas And Their Role In Forests, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frans Bongers May 2002

The Ecology Of Lianas And Their Role In Forests, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frans Bongers

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Recent studies have demonstrated the increasingly important role of lianas (woody vines) in forest regeneration, species diversity and ecosystem-level processes, particularly in the tropics. Mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of liana species diversity could yield new insights into the maintenance of overall species diversity. Lianas contribute to forest regeneration and competition, not only by competing directly with trees, but also by differentially affecting tree species and thus changing how trees compete among themselves. In addition, they contribute considerably to ecosystem-level processes, such as whole-forest transpiration and carbon sequestration. As the rate of tropical forest disturbance increases, they are likely to …

Spatial And Predictive Foraging Models For Gray Bats In Northwest Georgia And A Comparison Of Two Acoustical Bat Survey Techniques, Joshua Begg Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The federally endangered gray bat (Myotis grisescens) is an obligate, year-round, cavedwelling species. Efforts to protect caves occupied by gray bats have proved beneficial to recovery. Specific gray bat foraging area characteristics also are critical to gray bat population recovery and maintenance. In summer 2000 and 2001, I determined gray bat presence/absence with Anabat II acoustic bat detectors in potential foraging areas near 2 bachelor colonies in northwest Georgia. In 2000, I systematically sampled 213 locations near water sources over an 8.3 x 9.4 km sampling grid that was established over a 5,100 km2 study area. Each sampling point was …

Biology Faculty Articles

In studies of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, the early host immune response is one of the determinants of viral persistence. The class I human leukocyte antigens (HLA), which present foreign antigen to cytolytic T cells, are integral components of this response. We hypothesized that the highly polymorphic HLA genes affect the outcome of an HCV infection. To test this hypothesis, we molecularly typed 231 persons with well-documented clearance of an HCV infection and 444 matched persistently infected persons. HLA-A*1101 (odds ratio [OR], 0.49; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.27 to 0.89), HLA-B*57 (OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.39 to …

Difficulties In Achieving Coherent State And Local Fiscal Policy At The Intersection Of Direct Democracy And Republicanism: The Property Tax As A Case In Point, Mildred Wigfall Robinson May 2002

Difficulties In Achieving Coherent State And Local Fiscal Policy At The Intersection Of Direct Democracy And Republicanism: The Property Tax As A Case In Point, Mildred Wigfall Robinson

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Professor Robinson explores the uneasiness present when acts of "direct democracy" through means of voter referenda and ballot initiatives conflict with the ideals of representative government, using fiscal matters, such as the property tax, as an example.

Part I explores the changes that have taken place in the last two decades in voter strategy and in patterns of judicial interpretation, briefly reviewing the history of the property tax focusing on taxpayer reaction to long overdue attempts at administrative reform, and showing how that effort indirectly contributed to the "taxpayer revolt. "It further examines how and why broad-scale attempts to utilize …

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan May 2002

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan

Michigan Law Review

In the beginning, there was law. Then came law-and. Law and society, law and economics, law and history, law and literature, law and philosophy, law and finance, statistics, game theory, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, critical theory, cultural studies, political theory, political science, organizational behavior, to name a few. The variety of extralegal disciplines represented in the books reviewed in this issue attests to this explosion of perspectives on the law in legal scholarship. This development makes clear that the vocation of the legal scholar has shifted from that of priest to theologian. No longer is a law professor successful by virtue …

On Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods For Neural Networks, Raul Cruz-Cano May 2002

On Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods For Neural Networks, Raul Cruz-Cano

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Neural Networks (NN) have been used successfully to solve many different problems. It is an area of computer science and statistics that is very useful in real life. The advantages of NN consist of their ability to produce nonlinear input-output mapping, their adaptability, fault tolerance, uniform analysis and design. The search for better ways to train them consists of trying to find the optimal values of their free parameters. Some of these training algorithms are based on Markov Chains. They have some advantages over the traditionally used deterministic methods. In this document the main ideas related to these concepts are …

Using Gis And Land Use Data To Select Candidate Reference Sites For Stream Bioassessment, John Robert Olson May 2002

Using Gis And Land Use Data To Select Candidate Reference Sites For Stream Bioassessment, John Robert Olson

Theses and Dissertations

GIS was used to select candidate reference sites in Georgia to characterize the reference condition by sub-ecoregion for a rapid bioassessment of streams statewide. Instead of relying on best professional judgment or previous knowledge of a limited number of sites, we performed an objective evaluation of cumulative impact on all catchments using land use data sets. These included road and impoundment data from DLGs and Multi-Resolution Land use Consortium data. Land use impairment was measured as percentages of forest, urban, pasture, row crops, and barren area for both the entire catchment and for 10, 40, and 130-m riparian buffers, road …

Insect Biodiversity In Ficus Tuerckheimii (Moraceae): Which Model Fits Best?, May 2002, Erin L. Kurten May 2002

Insect Biodiversity In Ficus Tuerckheimii (Moraceae): Which Model Fits Best?, May 2002, Erin L. Kurten

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Understanding how biodiversity is maintained is important both for ecology and conservation biology. Models of biodiversity fall into two broad categories: resource-based models and deterministic models. Local communities of insects on Ficus tuerckheimii (Moraceae) in the Bullpen, Monteverde, Costa Rica were sampled in order to determine whether the predictions from a resource-based model or Hubbell's stochastic model better fit real data. Results could not conclusively support or disprove either model. Positive trends existed between diversity and resources as well as richness and resources; however these were not statistically significant. Species richness and evenness were not correlated, which does not support …

Role Of Driptips On Begonia Involucrata (Begoniaceae), May 2002, Ethan Householder May 2002

Role Of Driptips On Begonia Involucrata (Begoniaceae), May 2002, Ethan Householder

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study examined the dual role of multiple driptips of Begonia involucrata (Begoniaceae) in shedding excess water and minimizing erosion beneath a plant. One hundred and twenty leaves, having between one and four driptips were tested both with and without driptips to determine: the amount of water each leaf retained when a given amount was applied to its surface, the volume of soil displaced by each leaf, and the distance the soil was thrown by the drops. When driptips are removed, the amount of water retained on the leaf increases and the mean volume of soil displaced per driptip increases. …

Mist Variation And Epiphytic Orchid Abundance In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2002, Christopher Frohlich May 2002

Mist Variation And Epiphytic Orchid Abundance In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2002, Christopher Frohlich

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

There has been an observed increase in the frequency of days with no mist during the dry season in Monteverde (Pounds et al. 1999). This trend towards an increasingly dry environment could have detrimental effects on epiphytic orchids. The purpose of this project was to investigate the effect of mist level as well as mist frequency and branch direction on orchid abundance in 12 Daphnopsis americana (Lauraceae) host trees. Mist collectors were placed on 24 sample branches within the first horizontal angle of primary branches and mist was collected for eight days from all directions. Abundance counts of total orchids …

Automatic Indoor/Outdoor Scene Classification, Navid Serrano May 2002

Automatic Indoor/Outdoor Scene Classification, Navid Serrano

Theses

The advent and wide acceptance of digital imaging technology has motivated an upsurge in research focused on managing the ever-growing number of digital images. Current research in image manipulation represents a general shift in the field of computer vision from traditional image analysis based on low-level features (e.g. color and texture) to semantic scene understanding based on high-level features (e.g. grass and sky). One particular area of investigation is scene categorization, where the organization of a large number of images is treated as a classification problem. Generally, the classification involves mapping a set of traditional low-level features to semantically meaningful …

The Nature And Nurture Of Economic Outcomes, Bruce Sacerdote May 2002

The Nature And Nurture Of Economic Outcomes, Bruce Sacerdote

Dartmouth Scholarship

The relative importance of biology and envi- ronment is one of the oldest and most prominent areas of scientific inquiry and has been exam- ined by researchers as diverse as David Hume (1748), Charles Darwin (1859), and Sigmund Freud (1930). Social scientists are particularly interested in the degree to which family and neighborhood environmental factors influence a child’s educational attainment and earnings. The stakes in this debate are quite high and far-reaching. As Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray (1994) point out, the effectiveness of anti- poverty and pro-education policies is largely de- pendent on the degree to which environment matters. …

Bioavailability/Toxicity Of Iron From Aerobically Processed Organic Fertilizer, Stacey Marie Wilson May 2002

Bioavailability/Toxicity Of Iron From Aerobically Processed Organic Fertilizer, Stacey Marie Wilson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

For an undergraduate Honor's project, I worked under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Hall to determine the bioavailability and toxicity of iron from Milorganite® fertilizer, an aerobically processed organic fertilizer. The Milorganite® Company is a subsidiary of the Milwaukee Municipal Sewage District and produces a fertilizer of high iron content (approximately 5-7%). The high iron content has resulted in concern about the toxic potential, which until now was unknown. This thesis paper will explain iron chemistry, bioavailability, requirements, absorption, toxicity, and treatments, followed by a description of fertilizer types and contents. This will be followed by a description and reasoning …
