Do Jaguars (Panthera Onca) Depend On Large Prey?, Carlos A. López González, Brian J. Miller May 2002

Do Jaguars (Panthera Onca) Depend On Large Prey?, Carlos A. López González, Brian J. Miller

Western North American Naturalist

The jaguar (Panthera onca) has been classified as an opportunistic hunter that takes as many as 85 prey species, according to availability. In this study we analyzed jaguar food habits throughout its range to quantify the importance of small, medium, and large prey in the diet. Because peccaries (Tayassu) are present in most studies, we also tested their importance in relation to other prey items. We conclude that jaguars are equally using medium- and large-size prey, with a trend toward use of larger prey as distance increases from the equator. There was no significant difference between …

Assessment Of Cryptobiotic Crust Recovery, Robert C. Rychert May 2002

Assessment Of Cryptobiotic Crust Recovery, Robert C. Rychert

Western North American Naturalist

Chlorophyll a and b analyses of cryptobiotic crusts from burned and unburned sites on the Snake River plain provided an estimate of crust recovery. In less than 3 years, chlorophyll a levels were approximately 50% of the unburned reference site. Chlorophyll a/b ratios indicated that the biotic composition of the recovering cryptobiotic crust consisted largely of eukaryotic algae and bryophytes.

In Vitro/In Vivo Activation Of Angiostatin, Jason C. Anderson May 2002

In Vitro/In Vivo Activation Of Angiostatin, Jason C. Anderson

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Angiostatin is a proteolytic fragment of plasminogen that inhibits angiogenesis. It destroys newly formed capillaries and causes tumors to stop growing, shrink, or disappear altogether. We sought to determine if angiostatin could be produced from plasminogen by urokinase enzyme. We hypothesized that if angiostatin is produced, it could be an inhibitor of endothelial cell growth. To test this idea, plasminogen was purified by affinity chromatography using a sepharose-lysine column. Then, it was incubated with urokinase and 10% sodium azide. In order to produce angiostatin, samples were taken out at different time periods and analyzed on SDS-Page Gel electrophoresis gel designated …

Conformational Analysis Of Small Peptides By Circular Dichroism, Toni Bowie May 2002

Conformational Analysis Of Small Peptides By Circular Dichroism, Toni Bowie

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Reports on peptides that are rich in D-alanine indicate that peptides with this structural motif adopt a specific secondary structure. In this study, two cyclic tetrapeptides cyclo[Leu-D-Ala], where Xaa is Glu or Lys, was studied by circular dichroism (CD). The conformational stability of these peptides was investigated by varying the temperature, solvent, pH, and concentration of the peptide solutions. When these conditions were varied, the CD measurements in each condition did not produce any significant changes. The CD of both peptides exhibits two positive CD bands at 211 nm and 222 nm and a third positive CD band below 190 …

An Investigation Into The Toxicity Of 1,3-Butadiene And Its Metabolite (Monoepoxybutadiene) On Prostate Cancer Cells, Siobhian M. Bacchus May 2002

An Investigation Into The Toxicity Of 1,3-Butadiene And Its Metabolite (Monoepoxybutadiene) On Prostate Cancer Cells, Siobhian M. Bacchus

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, non-corrosive gas with a mild aromatic or gasoline like odor. Manufacturing, transporting and usage are the main sources of l,3-butadiene pollution in the environment. 1,3-butadiene is kno wn to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans and animals. The primary routes of potential human exposure to 1,3-butadiene are inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. 1,3-butadiene is metabolized in experimental animals and human liver microsomes to epoxide metabolites, initially 1,2-epoxy-3-butene and subsequently 1,2:3,4-di epoxybutane, by cytochrome P450 enzymes. There are significant species differences in the metabolism of 1,3-butadiene both in vivo …

Do Cellular Phones Cause Headaches?, Jasmine Gay May 2002

Do Cellular Phones Cause Headaches?, Jasmine Gay

McCabe Thesis Collection

Many people have recently complained about experiencing headaches in association with the use of their cellular telephones. There is much controversy over this subject because it has not yet been proven that the microwaves emitted by cellular telephones cause headaches. The research questions include the following: What are the effects, if any, of the use of cellular telephones on human health? Do they cause headaches? Are they responsible for the increase in size of some brain tumors?

There have been many experiments performed by various scientists in the field of bioelectromagnetics and by the World Health Organization (WHO); however, these …

Physiological And Behavioral Variation In Estivation Among Mud Turtles (Kinosternon Spp.), Day B. Ligon, Charles C. Peterson

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Kinosternid mud turtles, a primarily aquatic group, exhibit variable degrees of terrestrial activity in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. We compared behavioral and physiological responses to dry conditions in four populations representing three species, Kinosternon sonoriense, Kinosternon flavescens, and Kinosternon hirtipes. All four groups were subjected to simulated dry season conditions in the laboratory, during which activity was monitored and physiological responses (blood chemistry and rates of resting metabolism and evaporative water loss) were measured. Kinosternon flavescens and K. hirtipes represented extremes in apparent ability to estivate, based on activity and rate of increase of plasma osmolality. Two populations of …

Some Locally Most Powerful Rank Tests For Correlation, W. J. Conover

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Four examples are given to illustrate the ease and practicality of the procedure for finding locally most powerful rank tests for correlation. The first two examples deal with bivariate exponential models. The third example uses the bivariate normal distribution, and the fourth example analyzes the Morgenstem’s general correlation model.

Exact Level And Power Of Permutation, Bootstrap, And Asymptotic Tests Of Trend, Christopher D. Corcoran, Cyrus R. Mehta May 2002

Exact Level And Power Of Permutation, Bootstrap, And Asymptotic Tests Of Trend, Christopher D. Corcoran, Cyrus R. Mehta

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

We develop computational tools that can evaluate the exact size and power of three tests of trend (e.g., permutation, bootstrap and asymptotic) without resorting to large-sample theory or simulations. We then use these tools to compare the operating characteristics of the three tests. It is seen that the bootstrap test is ultra-conservative relative to the other two tests and as a result suffers from a severe deterioration in power. The power of the asymptotic test is uniformly larger than that of the other two tests, but it fails to preserve the Type I error for most of the range of …

Asymptotic And Exact Tests In 2 X C Ordered Categorical Contingency Tables With Statxact 2.0 - 4.0, Margaret Posch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The purpose of this study was to compare the statistical power of a variety of exact tests in the 2 x C ordered categorical contingency table using StatXact software. The Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Expected Nonnal Scores, Savage Scores (or its Log Rank equivalent), and Permutation tests were studied. Results indicated that the procedures were nearly the same in terms of comparative statistical power.

Modeling Quality Of Service For Workflows And Web Service Processes, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Jonathan Arnold May 2002

Modeling Quality Of Service For Workflows And Web Service Processes, Jorge Cardoso, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Jonathan Arnold

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In workflows for e-commerce and Web-services applications, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying Quality of Service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of services. The management of QoS metrics directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflows, the underlying workflow system must accept the specifications and be able to estimate, …

Innovative Stormwater Treatment Technologies: Best Management Practices Manual, Jillian E. Jones, G. Dana Bisbee, Harry T. Stewart May 2002

Innovative Stormwater Treatment Technologies: Best Management Practices Manual, Jillian E. Jones, G. Dana Bisbee, Harry T. Stewart

PREP Reports & Publications

Urban stormwater carries a number of pathogens, nutrients, heavy metals, sediment, and other contaminants as surface runoff flows over land. The increase in impervious or paved surfaces associated with development in urban areas reduces the natural infiltration of precipitation into the ground. With impervious cover, precipitation collects and carries contaminants before draining into nearby surface waters. Stormwater runoff from paved surfaces in developed areas can degrade downstream waters with both contaminants and increased volumes of water. This publication aims to make information on innovative stormwater treatment technologies more available to New Hampshire’s urban planners, developers, and communities. Traditional runoff management …

Field Application Of A Monoclonal Antibody Panel To Differentiate Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) Isolates, E.A. Nelson, H.A. Jones, L. Yang, K.B. Platt

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is recognized as the most economically devastating disease of swine throughout the world. Nucleotide sequencing and serological studies have deomnstrated sustantial antigenic variation amoung PRRS virus (PRRSV) isolates (Murtaugh, et al., 1995; Nelson, et al., 1993, 1996). Recently, European-like PRRSV isolates have been identified in the US (Rossow, et al. 2000) and other new, highly virulent PRRSV isolates have appeared and affect sows at all stages of gestation causing mortality of adult pigs as well as young pigs (Epperson et al., 1997). Therefore, it is even more important to control the spread of these …

Efficacy Of High Oil Corn In Reducing The Severity Of A Prrsv Challenge In Growing Pigs, B.T. Christopherson, R.C. Thaler, C.C. Chase, S.H. Pohl

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

The objectives of this experiment were to determine the effects of high oil corn (HOC) on the aerosol transmission of the porcine reproductive and respiratory synrome virus (PRRSV), and the effects of HOC on PRRSV seroconversion in growing pigs. One hundred PRRSV negative gilts (25 kg) were housed in 1 of 2 mirror imaged rooms. Both rooms contained 10 pens with 5 pigs/pen, and each room had its own separate ventilation and maure handling systems. The study was arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. The main effects consisted of a dietary energy source, (#2 yellow corn (CON) and …

Effects Of Administration Of Estradiol-17p On The Serum And Anterior Pituitary Igf System In Pigs, L.A. Rempel, J.A. Clapper May 2002

Effects Of Administration Of Estradiol-17p On The Serum And Anterior Pituitary Igf System In Pigs, L.A. Rempel, J.A. Clapper

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

The anterior pituitary (AP) gland functions as a storage and releasing unit for several hormones; growth hormone (GH), gonadotrophins (luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone), prolactin, adrenocorticotropin hormone, and tyroid stimulating hormone. Luteinizing hormone (LH) functions to increase ovarian follicular growth and maturation and responds to increasing concentrations of estradiol-17β (E2) that occur at estrus to cause ovulation. Production and secretion of the protein, insulin-like grwoth factor-I (IGF-I), occurs primarily in the liver, in response to GH release from the anterior pituitary gland. Insulin-like growth factor-I increases glucose uptake, amino acid transport, and glycogen synthesis resulting in increased protein accretion …
