Taking Out The Jacks : Issues Of Jetty Jack Removal In Bosque And River Restoration Planning, Kathy Grassel

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

This professional project report presents a history of jetty jacks from the 1940s to the present and offers some comments and recommendations on what the future has in store for jetty jacks based on the past. This history will trace how: • jetty jacks contributed to the success of the massive human undertaking of re-shaping the Rio Grande for the protection of property, levees, and riverbanks from flooding; • the expande role of jetty jacks in the establishment of a straight channel in the Middle Rio Grande Valley; • loss of function of jetty jacks in a post-dam era, and …

Biological Weapons: Toward A Threat Reduction Strategy, Brad Roberts, Michael Moodie Jul 2002

Biological Weapons: Toward A Threat Reduction Strategy, Brad Roberts, Michael Moodie

Defense Horizons

A decade ago, the U.S. military and its allies had a close call with biological weapons (BW) in the war to expel Iraq from Kuwait. Iraqi BW could have inflicted horrific casualties on coalition forces, but the war stopped short of the contingency for which Iraq had prepared, predeployed, and preauthorized the use of such weapons: a march on Baghdad to remove the regime. A decade later, the United States is again poised for war against Iraq—this time for the explicit purpose of regime removal. Moreover, it is engaged in a war on terrorism against adversaries who evidently are strongly …

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Disrupts The Latency Reactivation Cycle In Calves, Melissa Inman, Luciane Lovato, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones Jul 2002

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Disrupts The Latency Reactivation Cycle In Calves, Melissa Inman, Luciane Lovato, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle, and infection is usually initiated via the ocular or nasal cavity. Following acute infection, the primary site for BHV-1 latency is the sensory neuron. Reactivation from latency occurs sporadically, resulting in virus shedding and transmission to uninfected cattle. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, suggesting that it mediates some aspect of latency. An LR mutant was constructed by inserting three stop codons near the beginning of the LR-RNA, suggesting that expression of LR proteins would be altered. The LR mutant grew with wild-type …

Effect Of Time Of Temperature Observation And Estimation Of Daily Solar Radiation For The Northern Great Plains, Usa, Rezaul Mahmood, Kenneth Hubbard Jul 2002

Effect Of Time Of Temperature Observation And Estimation Of Daily Solar Radiation For The Northern Great Plains, Usa, Rezaul Mahmood, Kenneth Hubbard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Daily incident solar radiation is an important input for numerous crop growth simulation models. However, lack of recorded solar radiation is a significant impediment for most crop–climate studies. The present study aimed to overcome the problem of sparse historical data of solar radiation over the northern Great Plains. The approach was to develop a physically based solar radiation model wherein estimates were possible with minimum input data. In addition, this study investigates impacts of time of observation bias on the model formulation. The proposed model (M-H) requires measured daily range of air temperature (maximum minus minimum) and estimated daily clear-sky …

New And Known Species Of Litomosoides (Nematoda: Filarioidea): Important Adult And Larval Characters And Taxonomic Changes, Ricardo Guerrero, Coralie Martin, Scott Lyell Gardner, Odile Bain Jul 2002

New And Known Species Of Litomosoides (Nematoda: Filarioidea): Important Adult And Larval Characters And Taxonomic Changes, Ricardo Guerrero, Coralie Martin, Scott Lyell Gardner, Odile Bain

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During field surveys in Venezuela, Peru, and French Guiana, species of Litomosoides were recovered from bats and from a didelphid marsupial. Their morphology was studied, giving particular attention to the head and caudal papillae, the spicules (used to distinguish the carinii and sigmodontis groups of Litomosoides), and the microfilariae. Litomosoides wilsoni sp. n. from the short-tailed opossum Monodelphis emiliae is described from Peru; Litomosoides brasiliensis, Litomosoides chandleri, and Litomosoides guiterasi from bats are redescribed, and new hosts are recorded. For the first time, larval stages were recovered from bats (one male and one female fourth-stage larvae of …

Comparison Of Water Quality, Zooplankton Density, And Cover In Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus [Abbott]) Spawning Areas Of Lake Mead And Lake Mohave, Michael E. Golden, Paul B. Holden, Southern Nevada Water Authority Jul 2002

Comparison Of Water Quality, Zooplankton Density, And Cover In Razorback Sucker (Xyrauchen Texanus [Abbott]) Spawning Areas Of Lake Mead And Lake Mohave, Michael E. Golden, Paul B. Holden, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Publications (WR)

Las Vegas Bay and Echo Bay in Lake Mead have small, self-sustaining populations of razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus [Abbot]). Increased productivity and cover have been hypothesized as reasons for successful recruitment of razorback sucker in Lake Mead. Conversely, reproduction has been documented on Lake Mohave, another lower Colorado River reservoir, but no recruitment has been observed. In 2000, BIO-WEST, Inc. was contracted by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to design and implement a study to examine nutrient levels, zooplankton density, and cover in areas with and without razorback sucker recruitment success. We sampled Echo Bay, Las Vegas Bay, and …

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli Jul 2002

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Disabilities affect 54 million people and 4.4 million children in the U.S. and are of importance to special education faculty (Center for Disease Control 2000). A survey design examines the effectiveness of human-animal interaction, specifically horseback riding, in children with varying disabilities.

Therapeutic horseback riding as an animal assisted therapy, aims to promote mind and body integration through movement (psychomotricity) and the human-animal bond (Delta Society, 2001a; Spink, 1993, All, Loving & Crane, 1999). Effectiveness is measured by parent assessment of improvement in 67 child behaviors resulting from child participation in horseback riding, using a new Horseback Riding Survey. Behaviors …

A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg Jul 2002

A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg

Faculty Scholarship

Part I of this Article delineates a defendant's right to present voluntariness and credibility evidence against his or her confession. This section analyzes the basic constitutional framework of how a defendant can present this evidence and describes the traditional safeguards against false confessions. This background information provides a context for the overarching issue of expert testimony admissibility. Part II provides a basic understanding of differences between the psychiatric (medical model) and psychological (social model) approach to false confessions. It then examines the types of false confession defenses used by defendants and the interrogation techniques challenged by defendants. Part III reviews …

Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams Jul 2002

Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper I compare the fictional world depicted by Orwell’s 1984 with that of Huxley’s Brave New World from the point of view of an analytic philosopher. Neither novel should be read as predictions, the accuracy of which can be used to judge them. Rather, both attempt to portray what humanity could conceivably become. The authenticity of this conceivability is a necessary condition of the power of both works to raise central philosophical questions about the human condition. What is ethically wrong with control? How far can Man go in recreating himself? In what sense are these worlds anti-utopian? …
