Regulation And Measurement Of Oxidative Stress In Apoptosis, James Curtin, Maryanne Donovan, Thomas Cotter Jul 2002

Regulation And Measurement Of Oxidative Stress In Apoptosis, James Curtin, Maryanne Donovan, Thomas Cotter

Articles

Cells are constantly generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) during aerobic metabolism. As a consequence, each cell is equipped with an extensive antioxidant defence system to combat excessive production of ROS. Oxidative stress occurs in cells when the generation of ROS overwhelms the cell's natural antioxidant defences. There is a growing consensus that oxidative stress and the redox state of a cell plays a pivotal role in regulating apoptosis, a tightly controlled form of cell death in which a cell partakes in its own demise. More recently, a role for reactive nitrogen species (RNI) as both positive and negative regulators of …

Synthetic Studies Directed Toward The Phorboxazoles: Preparation Of The C3–C15 Bisoxane Segment And Two Stereoisomers, Patrick Bernard Greer, William A. Donaldson Jul 2002

Synthetic Studies Directed Toward The Phorboxazoles: Preparation Of The C3–C15 Bisoxane Segment And Two Stereoisomers, Patrick Bernard Greer, William A. Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A synthetic approach to the C3–C15 segment of the cytotoxic marine metabolite phorboxazoles is described. This segment consists of a methylene linked bisoxane structure. The first pyran ring was constructed by a Lewis acid catalyzed diene–aldehyde cyclocondensation. The β-C-glucoside substitution pattern of this ring was established by a stereoselective allylation. Ozonolysis of vinyl group and enantioselective allylation of the racemic aldehyde generated two separable homoallylic alcohols (−)-22 and (+)-23. The Mosher's esters of each alcohol were determined to be >90% de. Reaction of (−)-22 with acryloyl chloride, followed by ring closing metathesis gave the …

Occurrence Of Entomophthorales On Spittlebugs Pests Of Pasture In Eastern São Paulo State, Brazil, Luis G. Leite, Sérgio B. Alves, H. M. Takada, Antonio Batista Filho, Donald W. Roberts

Biology Faculty Publications

Spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) are the most important pests of pasture in Brazil. Nymphal behavior, i.e. residing in the soil, makes their control with insecticides difficult. Although Entomophthorales fungi occasionally have been found at epizootic levels in spittlebug populations, they have not been cultured, had their incidence levels determined, nor evaluated for pest control potential. The research reported here aimed to evaluate the occurrence of Entomophthorales species on spittlebug pests of pasture in Pindamonhangaba County, São Paulo State, Brazil. Evaluations were carried out in 2 adjacent fields with Brachiaria decumbens and Pennisetum purpureum grasses, respectively, of 5 ha each. Evaluations were …

Parallel Characterization Of Anaerobic Toluene-And Ethylbenzene-Degrading Microbial Consortia By Pcr-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis, Rna-Dna Membrane Hybridization, And Dna Microarray Technology, Yoshikazu Koizumi, John J. Kelly, Tatsunori Nakagawa, Hidetoshi Urakawa, Said El Fantroussi, Saleh Al-Muzaini, Manubu Fukui, Yoshikuni Urushigawa, David A. Stahl

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A mesophilic toluene-degrading consortium (TDC) and an ethylbenzene-degrading consortium (EDC) were established under sulfate-reducing conditions. These consortia were first characterized by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments, followed by sequencing. The sequences of the major bands (T-1 and E-2) belonging to TDC and EDC, respectively, were affiliated with the family Desulfobacteriaceae. Another major band from EDC (E-1) was related to an uncultured non-sulfate-reducing soil bacterium. Oligonucleotide probes specific for the 16S rRNAs of target organisms corresponding to T-1, E-1, and E-2 were designed, and hybridization conditions were optimized for two analytical formats, membrane and …

Involvement Of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor, Pdgf Receptor Signaling, Focal Adhesion Kinase And Src In Pressure-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Hypertrophy, Darian Clark Rice Jul 2002

Involvement Of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor, Pdgf Receptor Signaling, Focal Adhesion Kinase And Src In Pressure-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Hypertrophy, Darian Clark Rice

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Elevated blood pressure is associated with varying degrees of arterial remodeling. The mechanisms by which extracellular mechanical stress is converted into intracellular alterations in signal transduction and gene expression have yet to be fully elucidated. Our goal was to investigate the early events in the vascular smooth muscle response to acute hypertension and to identify mediators involved in long-term hypertensive remodeling.

In the acute phase of hypertension we targeted cell surface integrin and growth factor receptors thought to be mechanically sensitive. The signaling molecules FAK, Src and ERK-MAPK are known to be triggered by integrin engagement and growth factor receptor …

Stress-Counter Response Training: Flight Simulation Ans Biofeedback, Debra K. Stewart Jul 2002

Stress-Counter Response Training: Flight Simulation Ans Biofeedback, Debra K. Stewart

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Many attempts to reduce Human Error (HE) in aviation have been applied in the past. However, HE remains the largest reported cause of accidents and incidents in aviation. The present study was designed to implement a novel training method to produce voluntary control over the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Twenty-one participants flew a PC based F-16 flight simulator. There were three conditions: 1. Stress-Counter Response training (SCR), 2, traditional biofeedback training, and 3. A control. It was hypothesized that the SCR training group would show improved physiological control, better flight performance, and lower subjective workload ratings compared to the other …

Hegel, Nietzsche, And The Postmodern Teleological Impasse, Michael P. Tarpey Jul 2002

Hegel, Nietzsche, And The Postmodern Teleological Impasse, Michael P. Tarpey

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Our postmodern intellectual climate is characterized by two apparently contradictory impulses. One seeks to undermine, unmask, and deflate the pretenses of philosophy as traditionally conceived. The result is a focus on difference, surfaces, and fragmentation. The competing impulse seeks to reconcile, integrate, and synthesize. The result is a holistic focus on deeper similarities behind surface differences. I argue that these competing impulses can be traced back to Hegel and Nietzsche. Thus, an understanding of the relationship between these two thinkers can illuminate our current postmodern condition. I argue that Nietzsche and Hegel are remarkably similar in their approach to many …

Fine Root Vitality And Its Application In A Minirhizotron Study Of A Co2 Enrichment In A Florida Scrub Oak Ecosystem, Brandon Todd Herbert

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Minirhizotron images are assigned color codes to approximate the age of individual roots in situ. Triphenyl-tetrazolium chloride (TTC) has been used to measure the vitality of plant tissue by detecting dehydrogenase activity. TTC was used to assess the vitality of root tissue by color in a scrub oak ecosystem at Kennedy Space Center in central Florida. Roots were excavated, sorted into four color classes and stained with TTC. The product of the reduction of TTC by dehydrogenase enzyme, formazan, was extracted and its absorbance recorded using a spectrophotometer. A significant difference (p2 enrichment being conducted on a scrub oak …

The Decision Of African American Students To Complete High School: An Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Larry Davis, Icek Ajzen, Jeanne Saunders, Trina Williams

Center for Social Development Research

A longitudinal study explored high-school completion among African Americans. Male and female high-school students aged 14 to 17 (N=166) completed a questionnaire based on the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991) early in their second year. Intentions to complete the year were accurately predicted from attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (R=0.71; p

Gender Differences In Self-Perceptions And Academic Outcomes: A Study Of African American High School Students, Jeanne Saunders, Larry Davis, Trina Williams, Julie Miller Cribbs

Center for Social Development Research

There is increasing divergence in the academic outcomes of African American males and females. By most accounts, males are falling behind their female peers educationally as African American females are graduating from high schools at higher rates and are going on to college and graduate school in greater numbers. Some have suggested that school completion and performance is associated with how students feel about themselves. The purpose of this study was to explore gender differences in the relationship between self-perceptions and two academic outcomes among a sample of 243 African American high school sophomores. The results suggest that, overall; females …

Herbivore And Pathogen Damage On Grassland And Woodland Plants: A Test Of The Herbivore Uncertainty Principle, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Peter B. Reich, Belle Bergner, Walter P. Carson Jul 2002

Herbivore And Pathogen Damage On Grassland And Woodland Plants: A Test Of The Herbivore Uncertainty Principle, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Peter B. Reich, Belle Bergner, Walter P. Carson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Researchers can alter the behaviour and ecology of their study organisms by conducting such seemingly benign activities as non‐destructive measurements and observations. In plant communities, researcher visitation and measurement of plants may increase herbivore damage in some plant species while decreasing it in others. Simply measuring plants could change their competitive ability by altering the amount of herbivore damage that they suffer. Currently, however, there is only limited empirical evidence to support this `herbivore uncertainty principle' (HUP). We tested the HUP by quantifying the amount of herbivore and pathogen damage in 13 plant species (> 1400 individuals) at four different …

The Charter, Equality Rights, And Women: Equivocation And Celebration, Diana Majury Jul 2002

The Charter, Equality Rights, And Women: Equivocation And Celebration, Diana Majury

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In this article, the author examines some of the critiques made and some of the aspirations raised in the early days of the Charter by left/feminist/marginalized groups about the Charter, the equality guarantee, and the judicial decision makers. The author explores how these fears and hopes have played out with respect to Charter equality rights for women by looking at some of the sex equality decisions that have been made by the Supreme Court of Canada. The cases are discussed under the headings of reproduction, violence against women, family, employment, and socio-economic claims to explore how the sex equality analysis …

Lesbians, Gay Men, And The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, Brenda Cossman Jul 2002

Lesbians, Gay Men, And The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms, Brenda Cossman

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The legacy of the first twenty years of the Charter for lesbians and gay men is a contradictory one of victories and defeats. At the level of doctrine, strategy, and politics, both the victories and defeats have been precarious and contradictory. While gaining formal equality rights, lesbians and gay men have not been able to secure rights to sexual freedom. And while formal equality has displaced the heteronormativity that denied legal recognition and subjectivity to lesbians and gay men, this formal equality has come at a cost. Lesbians and gay men are being reconstituted in law: some are being newly …
