A Long Way From Home: Transatlantic Sea Star Migration, William Jaeckle, Paul Kehle Jul 2002

A Long Way From Home: Transatlantic Sea Star Migration, William Jaeckle, Paul Kehle

Scholarship

For a marine biologist strolling along the eastern coast of South America, finding some sea stars (popularly called starfish, and technically members of the class Asteroidea of the phylum Echinodermata) is not all that unusual. However, when closer inspection reveals the sea stars to be ones that are also found on the shores of the western coast of Africa, the marine biologist now faces an interesting question: How did these sea stars come to be so far from home?

Treaties In Collision: The Biosafety Protocol And The World Trade Organization Agreements, Sabrina Safrin Jul 2002

Treaties In Collision: The Biosafety Protocol And The World Trade Organization Agreements, Sabrina Safrin

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

In the event of a conflict between the requirements of the Biosafety Protocol, a multilateral agreement governing the trade in genetically modified organisms, and the requirements of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and associated agreements (collectively WTO Agreements), which treaty's requirements prevail? This question lies as the legal heart of the perceived conflict between trade globalization and environmental protection. This issue is particularly timely given the present trade dispute between the United States and European Union over the European Union’s restrictions on the importation of genetically modified agricultural commodities.

In this piece, I analyze the relationship between these …

Fast Filter-And-Refine Algorithms For Subsequence Selection, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Hao Wang, Limsoon Wong, Cui Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large sequence databases, such as protein, DNA and gene sequences in biology, are becoming increasingly common. An important operation on a sequence database is approximate subsequence matching, where all subsequences that are within some distance from a given query string are retrieved. This paper proposes a filter-and-refine algorithm that enables efficient approximate subsequence matching in large DNA sequence databases. It employs a bitmap indexing structure to condense and encode each data sequence into a shorter index sequence. During query processing, the bitmap index is used to filter out most of the irrelevant subsequences, and false positives are removed in the …

Predicting Positive Academic Intentions Among African American Males And Females, Larry Davis

Center for Social Development Research

Significant attention has been given to the educational shortcomings of African American students, especially compared to their white counterparts. By contrast, this study assesses positive predictors of educational success among 243 African-American high school sophomores. Because African American females typically have higher educational outcomes than their male peers, this study also examined these predictors by gender to better understand factors that may contribute to these differences. the study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a conceptual framework and also examined students’ self-perceptions in four domains: self-esteem, racial self-esteem, academic self-efficacy, and the importance of school completion to self. …

A Vascular Flora Of Choccolocco Creek: Calhoun, Cleburne, And Talladega Counties, Alabama, Loretta Richardson Weninegar

Theses

A study of the vascular flora of the wetland species of Choccolocco Creek, its floodplain, and other sensitive areas within the Choccolocco Creek watershed was conducted from March 1994 to May 2002. The creek, which originates in the Talladega National Forest in Cleburne County, is located in northeast Alabama. It flows in a south/southwest direction along the eastern border of Calhoun County and across northern Talladega County to its confluence with Logan Martin Lake near Talladega, Alabama. The floodplain occupies 6,514.67 hectares of the watershed that consists of 97,128 hectares of land in the three county study area.

Identification Of The Vibrio Cholerae Enterobactin Receptors Vcta And Irga: Irga Is Not Required For Virulence, Alexandra R. Mey, Elizabeth E. Wyckoff, Amanda G. Oglesby, Eva Rab, Ronald K. Taylor, Shelley M. Payne Jul 2002

Identification Of The Vibrio Cholerae Enterobactin Receptors Vcta And Irga: Irga Is Not Required For Virulence, Alexandra R. Mey, Elizabeth E. Wyckoff, Amanda G. Oglesby, Eva Rab, Ronald K. Taylor, Shelley M. Payne

Dartmouth Scholarship

The gram-negative enteric pathogen Vibrio cholerae requires iron for growth. V. cholerae has multiple iron acquisition systems, including utilization of heme and hemoglobin, synthesis and transport of the catechol siderophore vibriobactin, and transport of several siderophores that it does not itself make. One siderophore that V. cholerae transports, but does not make, is enterobactin. Enterobactin transport requires TonB and is independent of the vibriobactin receptor ViuA. In this study, two candidate enterobactin receptor genes, irgA (VC0475) and vctA (VCA0232), were identified by analysis of the V. cholerae genomic sequence. A single mutation in either of these genes did not significantly …

Oceanographic Observations In Chilean Coastal Waters Between Valdivia And Concepcion, Larry P. Atkinson, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Dante Figueroa, Ricardo De Pol-Holz, Victor A. Gallardo, Wolfgang Schneider, Jose L. Blanco, Mike Schmidt

CCPO Publications

The physical oceanography of the biologically productive coastal waters of central Chile (36 degrees to 40 degrees S) is relatively unknown. In December 1998 we made a short exploratory cruise between Valdivia (40 degrees S) and Concepcion (37.8 degrees S) taking temperature, salinity, oxygen, and current velocity profiles. Coincident sea surface temperature and color measurements were obtained by satellite. The results showed an area dominated by wind-induced coastal upwelling, river runoff, intrusion of offshore eddies, mixing, and heating. Upwelling centers were found over the shelf at three locations: inshore of Mocha Island, off Valdivia, and off Lavapie Point. At these …

In-Situ X-Ray-Absorption Spectroscopy Study Of Hydrogen Absorption By Nickel-Magnesium Thin Films, B. Farangis, Ponnusamy Nachimuthu, T. J. Richardson, J. L. Slack, Rupert C. Perera, Eric M. Gullikson, Dennis W. Lindle, M. Rubin

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Structural and electronic properties of co-sputtered Ni-Mg thin films with varying Ni to Mg ratio were studied by in-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the Ni L-edge and Mg K-edge regions. Co-deposition of the metals led to increased disorder and decreased coordination around Ni and Mg compared to pure metal films. Exposure of the metallic films to hydrogen resulted in formation of hydrides and increased disorder. The presence of hydrogen as a near neighbor around Mg caused a drastic reduction in the intensities of multiple scattering resonances at higher energies. The optical switching behavior and changes in the x-ray spectra varied …

Microbial Composition Of Near-Boiling Silica-Depositing Thermal Springs Throughout Yellowstone National Park, Carrine E. Blank, Sherry L. Cady, Norman R. Pace Jul 2002

Microbial Composition Of Near-Boiling Silica-Depositing Thermal Springs Throughout Yellowstone National Park, Carrine E. Blank, Sherry L. Cady, Norman R. Pace

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The extent of hyperthermophilic microbial diversity associated with siliceous sinter (geyserite) was characterized in seven near-boiling silica-depositing springs throughout Yellowstone National Park using environmental PCR amplification of small-subunit rRNA genes (SSU rDNA), large-subunit rDNA, and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS). We found that Thermocrinis ruber, a member of the order Aquificales, is ubiquitous, an indication that primary production in these springs is driven by hydrogen oxidation. Several other lineages with no known close relatives were identified that branch among the hyperthermophilic bacteria. Although they all branch deep in the bacterial tree, the precise phylogenetic placement of many of these lineages …

How To Measure Total Dissolved Solids (Tds) Using The Hanna Portable Conductivity Meter, Julie Walker, Chuck Ullery

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The HANNA D4 portable conductivity meter allows you to quickly estimate the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) present in a water sample. To obtain valid measurements, you need to follow proper procedures in calibrating, rinsing, and measuring. Here is a step-by-step procedure for two HANNA D4 model meters, along with instructions for converting the meter reading of each meter to TDS (ppm). Depending on which meter you have, the actual meter reading will be different, but EC or TDS results are the same.

Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa Eichhorn Jul 2002

Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa Eichhorn

Washington Law Review

Two federal circuits, borrowing from Title VII jurisprudence, recently recognized a cause of action for a disability-based hostile environment under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Neither opinion, however, considered how the analysis of a disability-based hostile environment claim under the ADA might differ from that of a race- or sex-based hostile environment claim under Title VII. This Article examines the differing theories of equality underlying the two statutes and argues that, because the statutes prohibit discrimination in fundamentally different ways, courts must resist the temptation to copy and paste Title VII doctrine into ADA hostile environment opinions. This Article …

[1] Results of a single-blind round-robin comparison of satellite primary productivity algorithms are presented. The goal of the round-robin exercise was to determine the accuracy of the algorithms in predicting depth-integrated primary production from information amenable to remote sensing. Twelve algorithms, developed by 10 teams, were evaluated by comparing their ability to estimate depth-integrated daily production (IP, mg C m(-2)) at 89 stations in geographically diverse provinces. Algorithms were furnished information about the surface chlorophyll concentration, temperature, photosynthetic available radiation, latitude, longitude, and day of the year. Algorithm results were then compared with IP estimates derived from (14)C uptake measurements …

Beyond Observable Prejudice-Moving From Recognition Of Differences To Feasible Solutions: A Critique Of Ian Ayres' Pervasive Prejudice?, Mary Margaret Penrose

Faculty Scholarship

As a female professor working within the academic ranks of a law school, I did not have to read Ian Ayres' work, Pervasive Prejudice? Unconventional Evidence of Race and Gender Discrimination, to know that the odds remain quite high that blacks and women will be subjected to greater instances of discrimination in the marketplace, in medical facilities, and in judicial proceedings than their white male counterparts. Although I would not suggest that such conclusion is axiomatic, it certainly is observable on an experiential level by those falling within the two categories (race and gender) discussed in Professor Ayres' book. …

Unilateral Lower Limb Suspension Does Not Mimic Bed Rest Or Spaceflight Effects On Human Muscle Fiber Function, Jeffrey J. Widrick, S. W. Trappe, Janell Romatowski, Danny A. Riley, David Costill, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

We used Ca2+-activated skinned muscle fibers to test the hypothesis that unilateral lower leg suspension (ULLS) alters cross-bridge mechanisms of muscle contraction. Soleus and gastrocnemius biopsies were obtained from eight subjects before ULLS, immediately after 12 days of ULLS (post-0 h), and after 6 h of reambulation (post-6 h). Post-0 h soleus fibers expressing type I myosin heavy chain (MHC) showed significant reductions in diameter, absolute and specific peak Ca2+-activated force, unloaded shortening velocity, and absolute and normalized peak power. Fibers obtained from the gastrocnemius were less affected by ULLS, particularly fibers expressing fast MHC isoforms. …
