Exploiting Truly Fast Hardware In Data Mining, Roger D. Chamberlain, Ron K. Cytron, Mark A. Franklin, Ronald S. Indeck

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In many data mining applications, the size of the database is not only extremely large, it is also growing rapidly. Even for relatively simple searches, the time required to move the data off magnetic media, cross the system bus into main memory, copy into processor cache, and then execute code to perform a search is prohibitive. We are proposing that a significant portion of the data mining task (i.e., the portion that examines the bulk of the raw data) be implemented in fast hardware, close to the magnetic media on which it is stored. Furthermore, this hardware can be replicated …

Evaluation Of Two Reference Planes To The Horizon In The Natural Head Position, David M. Allport Aug 2002

Evaluation Of Two Reference Planes To The Horizon In The Natural Head Position, David M. Allport

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dental casts are mounted to dental articulators using anatomical records in order to simulate and duplicate static and dynamic interocclusal relationships. The three dimensional relationship of the maxillary arch to the transverse horizontal axis of the mandible is defined by establishing a third point of reference. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the Frankfort horizontal plane and the HIP plane to the horizontal when the patient is in the natural head position. Ten subjects were evaluated in the natural head position with angular measurements made from lateral photographs and lateral skull radiographs to determine the …

Effect Of Peptidoglycan-Polysaccharide Complex On Reproductive Efficiency And Mastitis In Sheep, Ida Holaskova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bacterial infections associated with mastitis reduce pregnancies in cattle. Effects on pregnancy and incidence of mastitis in sheep were investigated after immunization with peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS) and killed cells from Strep. pyogenes. Rambouillet (n = 100) and mixed breed (n = 18) ewe lambs were immunized (∼d42 and 22 before breeding) with PG-PS (30mugPG/kg/bw) or killed cells or were not immunized (Control, n = 117). IgG antibodies were detected by ELISA. Ewes were bred at synchronized estrus. All immunized and half of non-immunized ewes were challenged with PG-PS (60mugPG/kg/bw) d5 after breeding. Although proportion of ewes pregnant at d42 did not …

Effects Of Edge And Coarse Woody Debris On Small Mammal Communities In Riparian And Upland Habitats In Northern West Virginia, Joseph Daniel Osbourne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The effects on biological communities of human-induced disturbances such as road construction for logging and military activities are a topic of much controversy in modern society. Furthermore, the response of small mammal communities to edge and coarse woody debris (CWD) volume in riparian and upland habitats of the central Appalachian Mountains has received little attention. The objectives of this study were to: (1) Perform a faunal survey of the Camp Dawson Collective Training Area in Preston County, West Virginia with an emphasis on rare and endangered species, (2) Estimate small mammal abundance, diversity, and condition in response to CWD manipulation, …

Determining The Effects Of Phosphorylation On Afap-110 Function, Lidia Nikolayevna Cherezova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As there are over twenty potential PKC phosphorylation sites in AFAP-110 structure, deletional mutagenesis was employed to determine which regions of AFAP-110 are most likely to contain crucial sites for PKC phosphorylation. Our data indicate that functional PKC phosphorylation sites must be localized to the amino acid stretch 266--294 within STK region of AFAP-110. There are four PKC candidate phosphorylation sites in this region; they are being substituted by alanine residues in order to determine their significance in serine/threonine phosphorylation regulation of AFAP-110 function.;Analysis of AFAP-110 amino acid sequence has also revealed that AFAP-110 contains twelve potential 14-3-3 binding sequences. …

Interaction Between Positive And Negative Effectors Of Embryonic And Postnatal Muscle Growth In The Chicken And The Mouse, Scott Allen Gahr Aug 2002

Interaction Between Positive And Negative Effectors Of Embryonic And Postnatal Muscle Growth In The Chicken And The Mouse, Scott Allen Gahr

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Myostatin, belonging to the TGF-beta family, negatively regulates skeletal muscle growth. The current study was conducted to assess the efficacy of in ovo administration of exogenous myostatin antagonist (MA) to enhance skeletal muscle growth and improve feed efficiency of broilers.;Growth hormone secretion is under the control of a pair of hypothalamic factors, growth hormone releasing hormone and somatostatin. The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) and its endogenous ligand represent a novel third mechanism regulating the release of growth hormone. Early chicken embryonic development, prior to day 14, has been proposed to be independent of GH. However, recent evidence shows that …

Reducing Interferences In Glow Discharge Spectroscopies Using Transient Operation And Collision -Induced Dissociation, Glen Paul Jackson Aug 2002

Reducing Interferences In Glow Discharge Spectroscopies Using Transient Operation And Collision -Induced Dissociation, Glen Paul Jackson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Plasma sources for optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry have provided scientists unprecedented knowledge about the fundamental properties and behavior of matter. As informative and useful as these methods are; however, there is still considerable room for improvement. The accuracy and precision of quantitative analyses by mass spectrometry and optical emission spectroscopy are often dependent on the presence of interferences. Interferences are defined as a measured signal response to a species at the spectral position of interest for the analyte that is not caused by the analyte. Because the presence of spectral interferences can deleteriously affect the integrity of reported results, …

Anatomical And Physiological Properties Of The Superior Paraolivary Nucleus In The Rat, Randy Joseph Kulesza Jr. Aug 2002

Anatomical And Physiological Properties Of The Superior Paraolivary Nucleus In The Rat, Randy Joseph Kulesza Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The superior paraolivary nucleus (SPON) is a group of neurons located within the superior olivary complex, a constellation of brainstem nuclei involved in auditory processing. The major inputs to the SPON arise from the contralateral ear and SPON axons target primarily the ipsilateral inferior colliculus. However, little is known regarding the neurochemical phenotypes present in the SPON and how these neurons respond to auditory stimuli. Understanding the neurochemical and physiological properties of the constituent neurons will provide insight into the functional role of the SPON and will contribute to our understanding of the neural circuitry involved in hearing. Immunocytochemical, stereological, …

The Processing Of Holliday Junctions By Blm And Wrn Helicases Is Regulated By P53, Q Yang, R Zhang, Xw Wang, Ea Spillare, Et Al Aug 2002

The Processing Of Holliday Junctions By Blm And Wrn Helicases Is Regulated By P53, Q Yang, R Zhang, Xw Wang, Ea Spillare, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

BLM, WRN, and p53 are involved in the homologous DNA recombination pathway. The DNA structure-specific helicases, BLM and WRN, unwind Holliday junctions (HJ), an activity that could suppress inappropriate homologous recombination during DNA replication. Here, we show that purified, recombinant p53 binds to BLM and WRN helicases and attenuates their ability to unwind synthetic HJ in vitro. The p53 248W mutant reduces abilities of both to bind HJ and inhibit helicase activities, whereas the p53 273H mutant loses these abilities. Moreover, full-length p53 and a C-terminal polypeptide (residues 373-383) inhibit the BLM and WRN helicase activities, but phosphorylation at Ser(376) …

Women In The Book Of Mormon, Camille Williams Jul 2002

Women In The Book Of Mormon, Camille Williams

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Feminist readers, particularly, have argued that biblical writing is sexist because the majority of the text was written by men who seem to place little significance on the role of women. This observation has become a serious concern among some because it calls into question the nature of God: does this supposedly perfect being love men and women equally? This study delves into the text of the Book of Mormon and its female characters to suggest that women were not considered lower than men in Book of Mormon times; likewise, women are not considered lower than men in the Church …

Use Of Sensory Cues By Fish Crows Corvus Ossifragus Preying On Artificial Bird Nests, Leonard Santisteban, Kathryn E. Sieving, Michael L. Avery Jul 2002

Use Of Sensory Cues By Fish Crows Corvus Ossifragus Preying On Artificial Bird Nests, Leonard Santisteban, Kathryn E. Sieving, Michael L. Avery

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

How predators locate avian nests is poorly understood and has been subjected to little experimental inquiry. We examined which sensory stimuli were important in the nest-finding behavior of fish crowsCorvus ossifragus, a common nest predator in the southeastern United States. Using an array of potted trees in a large enclosure, we presented artificial nests to captive crows and quantified responses to visual, auditory, and olfactory nest cues, and nest position. Partial ranks of nest-treatment preferences were analyzed using log-linear models. Nest visibility significantly increased the likelihood of predation by fish crows and increasing nest height was a marginally significant influence …

Out Of The Dust: The Ossuary Of James, . . . Brother Of Jesus, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies Jul 2002

Out Of The Dust: The Ossuary Of James, . . . Brother Of Jesus, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

A recently discovered ossuary with the inscription “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus” may be the resting place of the bones of James the Just, the brother of the Lord, from the New Testament. Analyses of the carving, the language, and the history of Israeli ossuaries are being undertaken in an attempt to unveil further information on this ossuary. If this ossuary is authentic and corresponds to the correct time period, it can be more strongly proposed that the bones that used to rest inside the ossuary did, in fact, belong to James, the brother of Jesus of Nazareth.

The Biophysical Limitations In Physiological Transport And Exchange In Plants Grown In Microgravity, D. M. Porterfield Jul 2002

The Biophysical Limitations In Physiological Transport And Exchange In Plants Grown In Microgravity, D. M. Porterfield

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes how changes in the physical behavior of fluids and gases in microgravity can limit the physiological transport and exchange in higher plants. These types of effects are termed indirect effects of microgravity because they are not due to gravity interacting with the mass of the plant body itself. The impact of limiting gravity-dependent transport phenomena has been analyzed by the use of mathematical modeling to simulate and compare biophysical transport in the 1g and spaceflight environments. These data clearly show that the microgravity environment induces significant limitations on basic physiological and biochemical processes within the aerial and …

A Classification Of Aquatic Plant Communities Within The Nothern Rocky Mountains, John R. Pierce, Mark E. Jensen Jul 2002

A Classification Of Aquatic Plant Communities Within The Nothern Rocky Mountains, John R. Pierce, Mark E. Jensen

Western North American Naturalist

A synecological study of aquatic macrophyte plant communities was conducted across northern Idaho and western Montana during the summers of 1997, 1998, and 1999. A total of 111 natural and man-made water bodies were sampled based on a stratification of environmental variables thought to influence plant species distribution (i.e., elevation, landform, geology, and water body size). Plant species foliar cover data were used to develop a hierarchical, floristic-based community type classification with TWINSPAN and DECORANA software. Six planmergent (conspicuous portion of vegetative plant body on the water surface) and 24 submergent (vegetative plant body found primarily underwater) community types were …

The Short Song Of Brewer's Sparrow: Individual And Geographic Variation In Southern Idaho, Terrell D. Rich Jul 2002

The Short Song Of Brewer's Sparrow: Individual And Geographic Variation In Southern Idaho, Terrell D. Rich

Western North American Naturalist

Brewer's Sparrows (Spizella breweri) have two song types—a "short" song that has 1 to 3 trill types and a "long" song that has 5 to 10 or more trill types. I describe the short song and examine patterns of individual and geographic song variation from 15 sites on the Snake River Plain in southern Idaho. Territorial males sang the short song regularly during the breeding season. Two-trill song types comprised 72.9% of all song types, with 3-trill types (18.8%) and 1-trill types (8.2%) less frequent. Over 90% of the males sang their song type(s) essentially without variation. Many …
