A Study Of Former Negro High School Students, Teachers, And Administrators In The Piedmont Area Of North Carolina., Carrie Smith Washington
A Study Of Former Negro High School Students, Teachers, And Administrators In The Piedmont Area Of North Carolina., Carrie Smith Washington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a qualitative study of the perceptions of a purposeful sample of 27 individuals who were students, teachers, or administrators in North Carolina Negro high schools in the period from 1934 to 1966. I interviewed all of them personally or by telephone. All interviews were tape recorded, and the tapes were later transcribed by an individual who was familiar with the speech patterns of the interviewees. A commercial software program was used to help me identify any themes that emerged from the interviews.
One main theme was that the conditions of buildings and equipment varied with the particular high …
Re-Test Of Rhinocyllus Conicus Host Specificity, And The Prediction Of Ecological Risk In Biological Control, Amy E. Arnett, Svata M. Louda
Re-Test Of Rhinocyllus Conicus Host Specificity, And The Prediction Of Ecological Risk In Biological Control, Amy E. Arnett, Svata M. Louda
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Biological control is proposed as an ecological strategy to manage the threat of invasive plants, especially in natural areas. To pursue this strategy, we need to know that the host specificity criteria used to evaluate ecological risk with deliberate introduction of an exotic insect for biocontrol are sufficient to predict potential impact on native species. Host specificity is defined by adult feeding and oviposition preferences and larval development. One way to evaluate the criteria is to re-examine case histories where ecological effects are recorded, such as that of Rhinocyllus conicus Frölich. This flower head weevil, released in North America in …

Testing For Genetic Evidence Of Population Expansion And Contraction: An Empirical Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation Using A Hierarchical Bayesian Model, Jay F. Storz, Mark Beaumont
Jay F. Storz Publications
The role of past climatic change in shaping the distributions of tropical rain forest vertebrates is central to long-standing hypotheses about the legacy of the Quaternary ice ages. One approach to testing such hypotheses is to use genetic data to infer the demographic history of codistributed species. Population genetic theory that relates the structure of allelic genealogies to historical changes in effective population size can be used to detect a past history of demographic expansion or contraction. The fruit bats Cynopterus sphinx and C. brachyotis (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae) exhibit markedly different distribution patterns across the Indomalayan region and therefore represent an …

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Hypersensitivity Of Clpp And Clpb Mutants Of Escherichia Coli, Soumitra Rajagopal, Narasimhan Sudarsan, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
We studied the hypersensitivity of clpP and clpB mutants of Escherichia coli to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Both wild-type E. coli MC4100 and lon mutants grew in the presence of 10% SDS, whereas isogenic clpP and clpB single mutants could not grow above 0.5% SDS and clpA and clpX single mutants could not grow above 5.0% SDS. For wild-type E. coli, cellular ClpP levels as determined by Western immunoblot analysis increased ca. sixfold as the levels of added SDS increased from 0 to 2%. Capsular colanic acid, measured as uronic acid, increased ca. sixfold as the levels of added …

Levels Of Maximum End-Expiratory Carbon Monoxide And Certain Cardiovascular Parameters Following Hubble-Bubble Smoking, Yanal A. Shafagoj, Faisal I. Mohammed
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: The physiological effects of cigarette smoking have been widely studied, however, little is known regarding the effects of smoking hubble-bubble. We examined the acute effects of hubble-bubble smoking on heart rate, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial blood pressure and maximum end-expiratory carbon monoxide. METHODS: This study was carried out in the student laboratory, School of Medicine, Department of Physiology, University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan, during the summer of 1999. In 18 healthy habitual hubble-bubble smokers, heart rate, blood pressure, and maximum end-expiratory carbon monoxide was measured before, during and post smoking of one hubble-bubble run (45 minutes). RESULTS: Compared …

Cold Cellulitis. An Unusual Presentation Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Hamdi H. Shelleh, Sarosh A. Khan, Abdul M. Al-Shayeb, Hussni Al-Hateeti, Latif A. Khan, Mohammad N. Kasabah
Saudi Medical Journal
We describe a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis, which presented as what we call "cold cellulitis". This may be differentiated from classical cellulitis/erysipelas by 1. Lesser local reaction like pain and tenderness 2. No systemic symptoms 3. No leucocytosis 4. Negative bacteriological and serological assay for bacterial cellulitis/erysipelas, 5. Longer course of illness and 6. Failure to respond to antibiotics. However, awareness of this type and frequent skin smears or skin biopsy will settle the right diagnosis. A review of different leishmanial presentations is given for comparison.

Dietary Overlap Between Wolves And Coyotes In Northwestern Montana, Wendy M. Arjo, Daniel H. Pletscher, Robert R. Ream
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We studied effects of recolonizing wolves (Canis lupus) in the North Fork of the Flathead area of northwestern Montana on the diets of coyotes (C. latrans) from 1994 to 1997. Wolf and coyote diets differed in frequency of occurrence of prey species during 3 of the 4 summers and winters (P< 0.001) during the study. Coyote diets contained more murid prey items, and wolf diets contained more deer (Odocoileus virginianus and O. hemionus) in the summer and elk (Cervus elaphus) in the winter. Coyotes and wolves ate prey of different size during both the summer (P < 0.001) and winter (P < 0.001) months in 1994– 1996: wolves took a greater proportion (P < 0.001) of large (>45 kg) prey species and coyotes, small (<2 kg) prey (P < 0.001). Wolves selected a larger proportion of adults (P …2>

Differences In Levels Of Sports Team Identification And Sports Fan Motivation Among American Indian And Caucasian University Of North Dakota Students, Tami Jollie-Trottier
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to measure the level of spectator identification and fan motivation among University of North Dakota (UND) students. Participants consisted of 57 Northern Plains American Indian students and 90 Caucasian students. Participants completed the Sports Spectator Identification Scale (SSIS) and the Sports Fan Motivation Scale (SFMS). It was predicted that Caucasian students would report higher levels of spectator identification with UND "Fighting Sioux" athletic teams than would American Indian students. It was further hypothesized Caucasian students would be more likely to contest changing the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo. It was also predicted that motivation …

From Development To Evolution: The Re-Establishment Of The "Alexander Kowalevsky Medal", A. T. Mikhailov, Scott F. Gilbert
Biology Faculty Works
The Saint Petersburg Society of Naturalists has reinstated the Alexander O. Kowalevsky Medal. This article announces the winners of the first medals and briefly reviews the achievements of A.O. Kowalevsky, the Russian comparative embryologist whose studies on amphioxus, tunicates and germ layer homologies pioneered evolutionary embryology and confirmed the evolutionary continuity between invertebrates and vertebrates. In re-establishing this international award, the Society is pleased to recognize both the present awardees and the memory of Kowalevsky, whose work pointed to that we now call evolutionary developmental biology.

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP) is a bridged bimetallic enzyme that removes the N-terminal amino acid from a peptide chain. To fully understand the metal roles in the reaction pathway of AAP we have solved the 1.20 Å resolution crystal structure of native AAP (PDB ID = 1LOK). The high-quality electron density maps showed a single Tris molecule chelated to the active site Zn2+, alternate side chain conformations for some side chains, a sodium ion that mediates a crystal contact, a surface thiocyanate ion, and several potential hydrogen atoms. In addition, the high precision of the atomic …

Cross-Cultural Research On The Five-Factor Model Of Personality, Robert R. Mccrae
Cross-Cultural Research On The Five-Factor Model Of Personality, Robert R. Mccrae
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The Five-Factor Model (FFM) is a comprehensive taxonomy of personality traits, which are tendencies to show consistent patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Although it was originally identified in the United States, the model appears to describe personality structure well in a wide variety of cultures, suggesting that personality trait structure is universal. Age changes--decreases in Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness and increases in Agreeableness and Conscientiousness from adolescence to adulthood--also appear to be universal, as are gender differences. Current studies comparing the mean levels of personality traits across cultures show systematic patterns, but their interpretation is uncertain. The FFM is …

Studying Personality Traits Across Cultures: Philippine Examples, A. Timothy Church, Marcia S. Katigbak
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Trait perspectives are dominant in the study of personality cross-culturally. We review the questions addressed by researchers who study personality traits across cultures, including, among others, whether traits are used in all cultures to understand persons and their behavior, the universality versus culture-specificity of traits, the validity of imported and indigenous measures of personality traits, and the meaningfulness of trait comparisons across cultures. We then summarize evidence relevant to these questions in one collectivistic culture, the Philippines. Overall, personality research in the Philippines supports the applicability of traits and trait theory as a basis for understanding persons and their behavior …
Kluckhohn And Strodtbeck's Values Orientation Theory, Michael D. Hills
Kluckhohn And Strodtbeck's Values Orientation Theory, Michael D. Hills
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
People's attitudes are based on the relatively few, stable values they hold. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's (1961) Values Orientation Theory proposes that all human societies must answer a limited number of universal problems, that the value-based solutions are limited in number and universally known, but that different cultures have different preferences among them. Suggested questions include humans' relations with time, nature and each other, as well as basic human motives and the nature of human nature. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck suggested alternate answers to all five, developed culture-specific measures of each, and described the value orientation profiles of five SW USA cultural …
Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife And Later Years In Western And Non-Western Societies, Frank Eyetsemitan
Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife And Later Years In Western And Non-Western Societies, Frank Eyetsemitan
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This chapter discusses the basis on which studies have been done on the later years of life in Western and non-Western cultures. It suggests that because Westerners value independence, most research on aging in Western societies has focused on how to help the individual maintain his or her functional independence throughout the life-span. Non-Westerners, on the other hand, value interdependence. Therefore, most research on aging has focused on the availability of social support in later life. But with Westernization influences in non-Western societies, there should be a shift in research efforts in order to accommodate a new understanding of aging …

What Questions Arise When Studying Cultural Universals In Depression? Lessons From Abnormal Psychology Textbooks, Junko Tanaka-Matsumi, Robert Chang
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
We examined 70 abnormal psychology textbooks published from 1920s to the present to identify consistent cross-cultural themes with regard to human depressive experiences over time and across regions of the world. The cultural and cross-cultural literature on abnormality and depression, in particular, has contributed to widening the scope of abnormal psychology textbooks over time. However, the texts are almost entirely dependent on Western diagnostic categories, particularly with regard to definitions of depression. Within the Western classification framework, authors of abnormal psychology textbooks have increasingly recognized the role of culture in depressive experiences and their communication. On the basis of our …
Automobiles, Individualism-Collectivism, And Psychic Systems: An Essay On The Functional Perspective In Cross-Cultural Psychology, Stefan Strohschneider
Automobiles, Individualism-Collectivism, And Psychic Systems: An Essay On The Functional Perspective In Cross-Cultural Psychology, Stefan Strohschneider
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This chapter identifies the mainstream approach in (cross-cultural) psychology as "variables psychology" and contrasts it with two versions of functionalist thinking. Functionalist approaches are concerned with the purpose of cultural differences and with the psychological mechanisms that produce them. Whereas questions of purpose are frequently debated in cross-cultural psychology, the problem of the basic psychological mechanisms is not. This reading demonstrates how this problem might be tackled by explaining empirical differences between individualists and collectivists through the concepts and mechanisms of a general model of action regulation. The consequences of this approach for the development of cross-cultural psychology are briefly …

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In my view, the study of culture provides three main contributions to our understanding of human behavior and mental processes. First there is great knowledge to impart about cultural similarities and differences in behavior, and these form the basis for improving psychological theories. Second the study of culture is a prime example of critical thinking in the field, as cross-cultural research begs the question about whether our notions of truth and psychological principles are applicable to people beyond those whom were studied. Third research on intercultural adjustment provides us with clues about possible psychological constructs that may be universally necessary …

Directions In Gender Research In American Indian Societies: Two Spirits And Other Categories, Beatrice Medicine
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Indigenous social role categories that represent third and fourth gender characteristics, such as the Lakota (Sioux) winkte and the Dino (Navajo) n and other Native terms, mark the status of these individuals. However, they are often blanketed by the term, berdache, in social science literature. Contextualization in an ethnographic frame is essential to greater comprehension of these roles. A critical review of contemporary research and the writings of the Native occupants of these categories has resulted in an all encompassing term: "Two Spirits." Coterminously, Native terms for lesbians are also emerging. However, all Native gay males and lesbians have …

This article develops a model of a project as a payoff function that depends on the state of the world and the choice of a sequence of actions. A causal mapping, which may be incompletely known by the project team, represents the impact of possible actions on the states of the world. An underlying probability space represents available information about the state of the world. Interactions among actions and states of the world determine the complexity of the payoff function. Activities are endogenous, in that they are the result of a policy that maximizes the expected project payoff.

Effect Of Presentation Modality On Predictions Of Children’S Communication Ability In The Classroom, Mary Aguila
Effect Of Presentation Modality On Predictions Of Children’S Communication Ability In The Classroom, Mary Aguila
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The modified Goodman scale, a hearing loss classification scale, is commonly used to describe audiometric findings for both children and adults (Haggard & Primus, 1999). This scale uses one or two word descriptors for hearing level categories and is based on a pure tone average (PTA), the average of hearing thresholds at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Although these categories were developed from clinical and educational observations (Goodman, 1965), degree of hearing loss has not been shown to reliably predict the educational or language performance of children with hearing impairment (Martin & Clark, 1996). This study was designed to evaluate …
Impact Of Corticosterone And Zinc Deprivation On Memory And Hippocampal Functioning, Patricia Lynn Moulton
Impact Of Corticosterone And Zinc Deprivation On Memory And Hippocampal Functioning, Patricia Lynn Moulton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of long-term exposure to corticosterone (CC) and chronic zinc-deprivation (ZnD) on memory performance and hippocampal damage in rats. Previous work has examined the impact of exposure to CC or the impact of ZnD, but no previous work has examined the combined impact on memory performance. Previous work suggests that chronic exposure to CC or ZnD results in hippocampal damage and memory deficits.
The present study utilized a broader range of memory tests than previous studies and administered the memory tests early and late in the time period of CC exposure …
Psychotherapy Integration: Examination Of Clinical Utilization, Gregory T. Tierney
Psychotherapy Integration: Examination Of Clinical Utilization, Gregory T. Tierney
Theses and Dissertations
Psychotherapy integration has been consistently found to be the modal or bimodal primary theoretical orientation explicitly reported by psychologists. Considering influences on the field of psychology, psychotherapy integration will likely remain a significant approach to psychotherapy for the foreseeable future. However, not much is known about the clinical application of psychotherapy integration. It is questionable whether current classifications of psychotherapy integration, including theoretical integration, eclecticism, and common factors, can adequately describe clinical approaches. The assessment of latent theoretical orientation, as a means of assessing primary theoretical orientation, is a promising way to examine the clinical use of psychotherapy integration. My …
