Effects Of Season, Sex, And Dietary Nitrogen On Muskoxen, Tim Charles Peltier

Growth and survival of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) are dependent on forage that varies in quality and quantity. One of the most limiting factors is nitrogen. In chapter 1, I predicted that growth would vary with season, sex and dietary nitrogen. While growth is highly season and results in dimorphism, it is not affected by supplemental nitrogen. In chapter 2, I predicted an inverse relationship between intake and digestibility of diets in adults. Intakes increased dramatically from spring to summer with no impact on digestibility. This resulted in increased body fat from summer to winter with little change in body protein. …

Sexual Segregation In Moose: Effects Of Incisor Morphology, Quality Of Willows, And Foraging Behavior, Douglas Frank Spaeth

Differences in the jaw morphology of Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) may relate to sexual segregation. Male Alaskan moose had significantly wider incisor breadths than did females; however, incisor depth did not differ between sexes. Those differences in jaw architecture might relate to the diets of sexes when they are spatially segregated. Moose consume willow (Salix spp.) as a fundamental component of their diet. Smaller-diameter twigs were more digestible, had more protein, and contained less fiber than larger-diameter twigs. Conversely, no relation existed between age of twigs and digestibility. Ruminants may segregate spatially because females competitively exclude males. An experiment …

Periodic glacial advances during the Pleistocene fragmented and displaced populations, while lowered sea levels permitted a biotic interchange between Asia and North America via the Bering Land Bridge. The tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus), a recent colonizer of North America, is a good model for studying the genetic consequences of these events. Variation in Mitochondrial (cytochrome b and control region) and nuclear (ALDH1) markers were examined within the context of Beringia's paleoclimatic history to examine the role of glaciations in driving differentiation and structuring patterns of genetic diversity. The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor

Weight loss and ill thrift are common problems encountered in muskox calves raised in captivity. Varied diagnostic results suggest that there is immunosuppression possibly related to trace mineral intake. This experiment evaluates the influence of a single trace element, copper, on muskox calf health and development. Muskox calves consuming a diet containing 5 ppm Cu exhibited lower weight gains, reduced survivability, depleted lymphoid tissue, thinner aortic arches, more muscle wasting and an increased occurrence of diarrhea than a group consuming the same diet but receiving injectable Cu supplementation. DNA microarrays are a new and promising biotechnology which allows the monitoring of expression levels in cells for thousands of genes simultaneously. An important and common question in microarray experiments is the identification of differentially expressed genes, i.e., genes whose expression levels are associated with a response or covariate of interest. The biological question of differential expression can be restated as a problem in multiple hypothesis testing: the simultaneous test for each gene of the null hypothesis of no association between the expression levels and the responses or covariates. Apoptosis, a form of genetically programmed cell death, plays a key role in regulation of cellularity of the arterial wall. During atherogenesis, improper apoptosis may cause abnormalities of arterial morphogenesis, wall structural stability, and metabolisms. It has been well established that vascular cells undergo apoptosis after uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). Thus, an analysis of the signaling pathway of apoptotic induction by oxLDL is of value in understanding the development of atherosclerotic plaque. HIV infection has been shown to predispose patients to accelerated development of heart disease. One mechanism for this pathology may involve endothelial activation either by HIV itself or by its secreted proteins, gp120 (a viral envelope protein) and tat (a protein that upregulates transcription of viral genes). We have studied the effects of gp120 and tat on signaling and production of inflammatory cytokines by Human Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cells (HPAEC). This study evaluated three HCOP projects to determine, describe, and assess their overall effectiveness and identify successful strategies used by these projects to reach their specific objectives. Demographic and scholastic data were collected about 393 HCOP participants at the three HCOP projects in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia during the years 1990-1999. Detailed information about the activities used to incorporate the HCOP legislative purposes into the programs was also collected.

Sixty-seven percent of HCOP participants were Caucasian and 78% were female. Scholastic data was limited to data from the EKU and ETSU HCOP programs. The average high school GPA score for …

The inverse sinh transformation on the Woolf interval is used to calculate the confidence interval for the odds ratio and the relative risk in a 2 x 2 table. According to Robert Newcombe, the new interval should improve the coverage probabilities and shorten the width of the confidence interval for these ratios, but the new interval requires evaluation of coverage properties. In this thesis, we will evaluate the exact coverage properties of this modified interval in extreme cases. The large multidomain Kalirin and Trio proteins containing dual Rho GTPase guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) domains have been implicated in the regulation of neuronal fiber extension and pathfinding during evelopment. In mammals, Kalirin is expressed predominantly in the nervous system, whereas Trio, broadly expressed throughout the body, is expressed at a lower level in the nervous system. To evaluate the role of Kalirin in fiber initiation and outgrowth, we microinjected cultured sympathetic neurons with vectors encoding Kalirin or with Kalirin antisense oligonucleotides, and we assessed neuronal fiber growth in a serum-free, satellite cell-free environment. IL-12 is considered a critical proinflammatory cytokine for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). IL-12 is a heterodimer composed of a p35 subunit and a common p40 subunit shared by other cytokines. Both IL-12 p40^–/– and p35^–/– mice fail to produce IL-12 p70 heterodimer. However, in contrast to p40^–/– mice, p35^–/– mice are highly susceptible to the induction of EAE, establishing that IL-12 p70 is not essential for the development of EAE. When compared with wild-type mice, both p40^–/– and p35^–/– mice show deficiencies in primary …

The Genus Podocerus (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Podoceridae) From Guana Island, British Virgin Islands, Adam J. Baldinger, Michael F. Gable

Postilla

A new species of Podocerus is described from Guana Island, British Virgin Islands. Podocerus jareckii n. sp. has dorsal carinations and an interramal spine on uropod 1. A second species of Podocerus collected from similar habitats lacks dorsal carinations and uropodal interramal spines; it is indistinguishable from Podocerus fissipes described from the coast of Brazil. The relationships of the species reported here to Podocerus found in Bermuda, and in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, are discussed.
